《Virtuous Cultivation》60. Nyom

Through the forest, the horrific sound of metal clashing echoed.
While a few beasts were on the prowl for disciples, after hearing the frightening sound, many decided to retreat.
After cloaking his hands in metal, Liu Qiang had been clapping them constantly. It was many times louder than when she smacked his bum, and it was very obnoxious. Mei was very glad this wasn't the real world, or her ears would have numbed by now.
The forest cleared, leading to rocky plains. There, only parched grey soil sat, countless boulders dotting the landscape. There was no plant life, save for a few dried weeds here and there.
Mei was rather surprised, as she thought the arena would be forest all the way through.
"I can't see any beasts or people in the distance." Wang Wei muttered, squinting as he looked into the distance. "Should we go back to the forest or head onwards?"
"Well, even with all the clanking, we didn't find any more beasts. I think maybe we should just go on." Liu Qiang sighed. "Maybe there's something hidden here?"
"Like?" said Zhang Ming.
"How would I know?"
Su Qing was very pleased, seeing so many rocks. He began picking up the new, prettier rocks. Unfortunately, there was only so much a basket could carry, so the little spirit began tossing out the uglier rocks; the misshapen ones covered in moss and dirt.
Rock birds... your mother is throwing you out for being ugly. Mei laughed to herself silently.
As they walked, the ground began to tremble gently.
Readying themselves, the group jumped back as something popped out of the ground. A disgusting mess of fleshy tendrils, with two slimy... nostrils? Mei reeled back in disgust.
Looking closer, Mei realised it was the nose of a huge black beast, apparently a mole of sorts. Mei couldn't help but had her eyes drawn to its massive, deadly looking claws.

"Ewww!" Wang Wei shouted.
Immediately, he blasted a huge wave of flames at it.
"Nyom!" the mole cried out.
It began flailing around as flames enveloped it, until it vanished.
"Nyom nyom... nyom."
Mei and her group heaved a sigh of relief. But above them, a huge white spirit popped out of thin air.
"Assault of an innocent animal!" it boomed. "100 points deducted from Wang Wei!"
What?!
"A beacon of light will now show his location, and the team that defeats him will get double the points!"
"Huh? Hey, what's the big idea!" Wang Wei shouted.
"What did that mole do to you, huh?" the spirit shouted back.
"Eh?"
"Was it because he was ugly? Do you kill someone on sight for being ugly?" it continued to yell.
"But..."
"If so, then learn your lesson!"
And with that, the spirit vanished, too fast for Wang Wei to respond. Out of reflex, Mei checked her prize slip to see if she got any points. None, unfortunately.
"Uuuuu... it's too bright..." Wang Wei stumbled around. "I can't see..."
Mei couldn't but squint her eyes from the light as she looked at the overwhelmingly radiant beam that shot down from the skies, landing on Wang Wei.
If the sect didn't want to encourage disciples to fight spirit beasts, why did they need to fight beasts using the tournament? Stupid sect master...
Though, maybe it was to say that it was fine for them to fight back if beasts attacked first? Mei didn't know why she tried to justify the sect master's nonsense. He was probably just trying to mess with the disciples.
"Um, are you okay?" Xiuying asked. "Whoa!"
Before her eyes, Wang Wei tripped over a rock and fell on his face.

"No..." he groaned.
Great, now their main fighter was incapacitated for no good reason. At least they would be able to find disciples now, she supposed.
Xiuying walked forward to help him up, only to stumble on a rock. Apparently, just being near him was too blinding.
"This is unfair!" he shouted to the skies.
Immediately, the light lessened greatly, allowing him to see again. Wang Wei paused for a moment, his anger now confusion. The whole group paused as well, just as confused.
The ground began rumbling again, this time with stronger tremors.
"Nyom!"
Several other moles popped out, brandishing their huge claws. They were angered by the defeat of their friend!
"Dammit!" said Wang Wei.
Unsure if they were even allowed to fight back, Mei and the others could only run. Zhang Ming turned around and shot an icy wave at one of the mole's nostrils, freezing its snot. Yingyi kicked up the soil at them as he ran. Mei wasn't sure how useful that was against creatures that literally lived in dirt.
Before long, they ran back in the forest, panting. Oddly enough, the moles weren't willing to follow them, only making angry "nyomming" sounds from the grey soil.
"I guess we won't be exploring the rocky area then," said Xiuying.
"Hmph. I bet there wasn't anything useful there anyway." Wang Wei sulked.
"So do we just wait here, or do we try to move somewhere better?" Liu Qiang asked.
"There's no point in going anywhere since people are coming to us." Wang Wei said. "I have a better idea."
An idea?
Mei watched as he began spewing his flames at a nearby tree.
"I'll burn down all the trees, so we have more space to fight!" he said.
Su Qing, seeing that, hid behind Mei.
"Scary..."
Right, Su Qing was a wood spirit, so he was probably pretty close to trees.
Mei patted the puppet on the head. The little spirit was confused, not understanding the human gesture. Still, sensing Mei's intentions, he felt better.
As tree after tree fell, the air scorching, from a distance, she heard an animal running.
To her surprise, it was actually the Blackie. On its back, its owner, the chubby girl sat. Three other people followed from behind, and to her surprise, Junwei was one of them.
"Little missy, the time has come for my revenge!" he shouted, a triumphant look on his face.
Urgh, that annoying guy.
"Do you really have to call me that?" Mei said, frowning.
Junwei looked surprised for a moment.
"Ah, not you. I was talking to Guang Ai." he said, pointing to the chubby girl.
Mei: ...
"Don't ride him for too long." the girl said. "Blackie doesn't like it when strangers ride him."
Blackie barked in agreement.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

Glitched! Uplift Arc
[Winner of the April 22 Royal Road Writathon Challenge] In 2202 the System reached Earth. Thankfully it had learnt from previous uplifts and implemented an introductory arc to acclimatise the new participants rather than chucking them in the deep end. The previous practice of just dumping unsuspecting beings into a System designed for the growth of the multiverse had led to catastrophic and sub-optimal results. The return on investment was abysmal. That old trope was so over-cooked - after nearly extinguishing itself through negative returns new policy was required. That was 356 trillion local years back. Now over 5600 successful uplifts had joined the ranks of the multiverse. But the System was always learning, always growing. Still there were glitches. Mostly minor. Mere irritants really. Sometimes even they were catalysts, triggering a fresh expansion. Soon the System would understand why. Our Earth was 7912th. - Ascend - Battle - Challenge - Dominate - Expand - Gro... - Glor... - Where’s the eff word? - Glitch... File corrupted. ---END SYN---

When 23-year-old Leo is suddenly transported to a new dimension filled with horrors, he needs to adapt to survive. Taken from earth together with thousands of others, they must do anything to come out on top. In their new reality, under the all-powerful System, their human limits are no more. Will this newfound power breed cruelty or compassion?Follow his struggle and journey, as he grabs hold of whatever he can only to see another day and another fight. Human nature and morals will be put to the test with each passing moment. When the horrors of the imagination become all too real, the feeble minds of men and women alike are brought to the brink of insanity. If we are the product of our environment and culture, what sort of people will be born of a place filled with violence, nightmares, and horror? Forced to fight for his life, Leo must remain sane. And so does the people around him, if he is ever to survive. Author's note:This is an old version that has been completely dropped in favor of a new and better version. I have learned a lot from written this instance, but I believe the work has been subpar and I can do much better with the story and the premise I have devised. I will be posting the new version on a different page.
