《Bitter》Bitter 17

The irony of asking for a handout after deciding not to rely on others didn’t pass Britta by. But sometimes you had to go down before you could go up, and at least it would be getting assistance on her own terms. She wouldn’t have to feel obligated to a cardboard box full of donated clothes.
The woman behind the counter looked down at Britta over the spectacles perched on her long thin nose. She was an elf, or at least that’s what Britta assumed. She had pointy ears which meant elf or Vulcan, as far as boys were concerned. She knew this only too well from her father’s predilections which contained both and in large amounts.
“Guild card?” said the elf in a squeaky voice. It was hard to tell how old she was, but she was certainly very beautiful. Britta imagined some nerd spending weeks designing her to look like the elf of his dreams. It was kind of pathetic, really.
Britta found it hard to peer over the counter at the elf who was in a booth with a small opening to interact through. There was a block of wood on the floor that Britta realised must be there for short people like herself. Adventurers came in all sizes, so accommodations were made.
She stepped onto the block and was able to get her head above the counter.
“I don’t have one. I don’t think I’m a member of the guild.” In the back of her head she'd assumed she'd automatically been made a member of the guild when she started the game, but that seemed unlikely now that she thought about it. “How do I join?”
The elf adjusted her glasses, which Britta was sure she didn’t need and only there to give her that librarian-look men seemed to like so much, and put a sheet of paper on the counter. “Fill that in.” She handed over a pencil.

The form had the same questions on it as the character creation screen. Name, race, class… Britta filled it in, but hesitated when she got to class. Did she really want people knowing she was an illusionist? Apart from them expecting her to do magic that didn’t blind everyone, knowing she was making illusions would make people less susceptible to being fooled by them.
It wasn’t that big a deal since she didn’t plan on playing the game beyond this weekend, but she still wanted to avoid making basic mistakes. Dying over and over wouldn’t be much fun.
“Can I leave this part blank? I don’t want people to know what class I am.”
The elf pursed her lips. “You have to fill in all sections. But you can make it private so only you and guild staff can see it. All information is treated as confidential.”
“How do I make it private?”
The elf reached out a hand and tapped the form with a long slender finger. Next to the space where she was supposed to put her class, there was a small box with the word ‘Private’. The strange thing was, she was sure it hadn’t been there a second ago.
“Check the box,” said the elf.
Britta finished filling in the form and passed it back to the elf who looked it over and then pulled out a small, laminated card.
“Welcome to the guild. You can use this at any of our branches. You are eligible for one free tea or coffee from the guild canteen per day.”
Britta picked up the shiny card. How had she made it so quickly and did they really have laminating machines in this pre-industrial society? No doubt there would be plenty more anachronisms to roll her eyes at as she travelled around.

The card also had a picture of her which looked like a photograph. They had cameras, too? Probably not. It was the first time Britta had seen her own face. She had seen what a gnome looked like when she had chosen it as her race, but seeing herself was quite a shock. She wouldn’t be winning any beauty pageants. No change there then. Mind you, perhaps by gnome standards she was a bit of a looker.
“You can take anything that fits from here,” said the elf as she placed a box on the counter. It was too big for Britta to see into and she had to tip it over. Inside were an assortment of clothes, shoes and hats. Like any collection of charity clothing, only the odd sizes were left. Fortunately, Britta was an odd size and she quickly found clothes that fit her perfectly. Soft suede trousers, a white shirt with stains she didn’t dare look too closely at, a black leather cropped jacket and boots.
She didn’t look much like a wizard, but it was a lot better than the rags she’d been given at the church. And the clothes were scuffed up and broken in which would make her look less of a noob, she hoped.
“Thanks,” said Britta. “I don’t suppose you have any weapons I could have?”
“No,” said the elf, “you have to find your own weapons. Or buy them.”
Which brought up another matter. “How do I make money. As an adventurer, I mean. Do I look for treasure in dungeons or something?”
“You can do that. Simpler to claim a bounty.” She pointed at a wall which was covered in posters, many of them faded to the point of being almost blank.
Britta stared at them and realised they were wanted posters. They had pictures of various creatures with a reward underneath. Some of the amounts seemed quite large, but was she really the bounty hunter type? How was she supposed to bring them in? Or was she supposed to kill them? But then how would she carry the bodies? It all seemed beyond her abilities.
“Or you could get a job,” said the elf. “I hear McDonald’s is hiring.”
They had a Micky D here?

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.

YAOS 1 - Limitless Adventures - Yet Another OP Story Book 1
December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and at Amazon. December 30th 2018: V1.1.2 of YAOS Book 1 is out, some content additions, fixed typos. Amazon's enhanced typesetting now displays tables properly. YAOS is shown through the eyes of some genius athlete getting OP inside a VR, ah wait, Full Immersion game, ?F.I.O?. Not a Hero, not a Nerd, just a driven individual paying for mistakes made, biding time until he can return to the Real World. He isn't defined like you'd normally do it, you can pick his looks and name all on your own, just like you do in video games. Believe it or not, keeping his looks undefined is harder than you think. His backstory isn't expounded in detail, but it drives his choices. Book 1 isn't about depressing sob stories but about fun and rushing forward, pursuing new horizons. Oh, and you'll end on a cliffhanger! Well, most serials do, so you will probably expect that without being told explicitly. But it isn't that bad, there's a lot of reveals and more to come once this book, that is the first in a planned three-part series, is finally ready for release on amazon et al. The published version will have: 1.) Godawful speaker tags, I hate them, they make you stop thinking and speed up editing so much. In hindsight they should have been in to begin with. But I stand by my goals proclaimed earlier. You guys should think while reading, that is the whole point of the exercise. Apply the knowledge and ideas, improve yourself, get creative! 2.) Pretty colored tables, the damned blue boxes, a lot of work, 69 in one book. Finally fixed amazon's centering issue. Can't say I liked the hours needed to debug that. 3.) The promised Mitara chapters. 4.) A cover! 5.) And lastly, updated polished versions of several chapters. MC shares more of his past, some terrible chapters (esp. 32) finally work. Some new scenes, minor rewrites in parts. Text flow and other issues. The current challenge is to maintain essential ambiguity while satisfying people wanting to know more without thinking three steps ahead. Balancing one with the other is tough. The smut which was in remains, but the story told is not to be superseded by it. A 15+ rating for the first book is also important, not to mention, YAOS wasn't meant to contain any smut to begin with. If the Author can turn to writing full time his output should increase, so please support YAOS #1 once it does finally release. ~Thank You~ No maps so far, that should be in, but is really hard to get done right. Again, tips are appreciated. Update September 2017: Stubbed chapters, sorry guys, currently don't have time to upload them elsewhere, polishing book 1 and 2, writing 3, takes precedence. Book 1 is in heavy editing, too much to keep synced and continuing editing. I'd need a site which offers JS-free rapid managing of chapters and comments. Coding one myself or setting a premade up is out of scope until I'm done with the books. RRL-old offered that, nuff said. This is only here because the author believes in fairies, nobody reads this, most likely. October to December 2017: Life threw some curveballs. February 2018: Book 2 draft 1 completed, at ~150K words. Book 2 is fairly epic in scope, requires 1 rewritten chapter, some editing. Tables and miscellanea are in, but needs at least a grammar pass. March 2018: Book 3 at 28k words, first arc, rest needs serious planning for spin-off and satisfying conclusion. July 2018: Yet another proofing/editing session of books 1-3, 101+ chapters, ~300k words. B3 at 48k, starts out great, but no ETA, no wordcount limit, in flux. But prioritizing my writing cannot be done, I hate the delays as much as you, but you will prefer the whole released in a timely fashion rather than wait. Knowing myself how excruciating waiting can be, at least you'll get significantly polished versions and an ETA on book 2 by release of book 1. December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and in the process at Amazon et. al.. . To all who wait patiently, offered feedback, thanks again!
