《Destiny Online》Prologue: Project Hope

Clattering and clicking resounded throughout the brightly lit room as the nervous full on rush of an army of computer technicians and experts tried to salvage a new fatal development on their project. The most highly advanced computing hardware and programming in the world had scrolling text on hundreds of monitors appearing almost faster than it could be read. It had just turned their stressful, overworked jobs into a nightmare that literally made several go into a mental breakdown from stress, worry and exhaustion. Several even fainted from the pressure.
Above the sprawling mayhem an overlook of mirrored glass windows contained the resolute project leaders viewing the horror that was playing out before them. Hearts gripped with fear, their brows sweating, they could barely breath. They knew the consequences of what was happening and the pressure weighed even more heavily on the three of them. They didn't know what to do as they watched the human races last hope of survival spin completely out of their control. "Tom...Tom how do we stop this. This can't be happening... can it?" A woman in her sixties with a brown business suit and graying brown hair asked in a quivering voice. The man that was addressed couldn't even reply. He was still stunned and could barely keep his failing heart from exploding in his chest.
A man in a white lab coat even older than the three standing in the control room burst through the sliding door. His piercing blue eye's drew others observations away from his wrinkling liver spotted face and white hair of an 80 odd years old. The piercing blue eye's locked on Tom, "Have everyone stop what their doing. It's only making everything worse."
Looking at the man that just burst into the room gave Tom the chills. Few people even had the clearance to meet the man before them. Sure Tom, Susan and Macky the three project leaders had the clearance but from them only Tom had met Mr. Harkin and only once at that. Mr. Harkin was the lead scientist on Project Hope long before they even found the Alien drone over 40 years ago in 1985. Tom knew Mr. Harkin has forgotten more about the project than anyone has ever known. He has been the lead scientist for almost the whole time since the start of the project in 1974 to present 2028 over 50 years of brilliance and handwork towards the continuation of the species.

Project Hope was created after an extensive study done by the U.S., Several European nations, also including Korea, Japan and Australia to see if the sustainability of the human race on Earth was viable with the increasing population, resources and pollution. Before Project Hope was even created in 1974 the first of several hundred consensus groups. All major analyses groups since 1957 determined that with the influx of population, pollution and the strain of resources at the detriment of the planets echo system would be so depleted and harsh by 2025 the human race would be unable to survive. Not knowing what to actually do the U.S. decided to put together a multi-national group of the worlds smartest minds. The most brilliant minds came together under Project Hope in 1974 with an almost unlimited budget to find what was needed to help the human race survive. It was decided that technology would be their saving grace. If tech could develop fast enough it might be the deference in survival. Since 1974 Project Hope has been developing tech as fast as possible and disseminating it all out to the most cable company's to develop further as well as produce it. It was a hard balancing political act through technology summits for who got what. In the end though the human species was loosing the race for sustainability. So far Project Hope has only been able to prolong the disaster that is still on its way.
In 1985 during the tyrannical dictator-ship and chaos of the U.S.S.R. Project Hope got information that Russian's had a unknown pieces of hardware which was rumored to be not of this world. All within Project Hope did not believe it but yet they could not ignore even a small chance that it could be real. To the extreme luck of the Project they had recovered a Space Drone not of this world now named Destiny. It was hard to recover even a scrap of information through the security protocols of the drone but the little they did advanced technology by decades faster than what was ever possible before.
Tom was finally awakened from his shock, "Mr. Harkin, Wha...What do you mean?" The other two project leaders standing next to Tom was in even further shock. Never having been able to meet the elusive legend himself.
"I mean exactly what I said. Unless English has stopped being a language since I've been locked up in this damned mountain. Everyone and I mean everyone and everything connected to Destiny needs to be cut immediately. Destiny went into a intruder lock-down mode, something I have been warning about for years and is now locking everything away. Unless Destiny believes there is no longer a threat it will keep on putting up defenses until were unable to access anything in it." Mr. Harkin walked over to a monitor that had three Plexiglas flip shields with keyboards beneath them.

Mr. Harkin pointed, "Their no time to think about it. As of five minutes ago their was only 118 ports left to access Destiny. I estimated in the next minute or so their will be no ports at all to connect into Destiny's mainframe."
Tom stuttered, "We... we need to contact the Presidents and Prime minister to do a hard disconnect."
Mr. Harkin shook his head with sympathy. He knew the three project leaders careers would most likely not survive this action but it had to be done. Mr. Harkin kept his piercing blue eyes locked on to Tom, "Tom their isn't time. I know what the three of you will go through when you do this but if you don't, Destiny our last hope for the survival of our species will be lost. Destiny is too far beyond us to even attempt to force it to allow us access. If we lose all of the excess ports Destiny will be forever closed off from our small little prying minds."
Tom went pale as did Susan and Macky. Tom knew not to doubt Mr. Harkin and so made up his mind with a shaky voice, "I...I will take responsibility for this you two. It is...It is my decision. Go to your disconnect consoles."
All three with worry on their faces flipped the protective covers on the secured consoles and began entering their own separate disconnect codes. Finally Tom hit the conformation button and watched a monitor overhead as large cables connected to a large matte-black 25 meter radial sphere started exploding with controlled mini detonations that severed all the thousands of cables connected to the Alien drone Destiny.
Barely able to stand on shaky legs the three Project Hope leaders sat down as they watched the screens go blank down in what they called the pit. As the screens went blank in the pit the techs looked up to the control room where the now disheartened project leaders sat in stunned silence.
Mr. Harkin walked before the three of them and for the first time smiled, "You three don't need to worry so much. Old Harkin will fix this and pull your bacon off the skillet. I understand Destiny more than anyone could imagine. I have an idea already to go if this were to ever happen. I've already sent in dozen of reports and analysis telling the head honchos out their Destiny never did like people poking at it. It's a limited A.I. from what I understand and for that reason alone we have been very cautious with it and we shall continue to be. However, I have recently created a plan to have Destiny instruct us without poking around at its data banks. It's not a full A.I. so with my plan it's natural programming will help us learn without going into lock-down mode. We won't have to fight to get around or breakthrough almost impossible firewalls. Not only that but instead of having just a few thousand minds trying to save our species we will have millions instead and no one would suspect a thing about it."
Tom, Susan and Macky looked up at Mr. Harkin with a little bit of renewed hope.
