《Greenskin》Chapter 22 - The Foreigner and the Firebreather

Kor'Ak burst from the treeline, a heavy steel blade lashing forwards as he drew it, thick tower shield raised over so slightly as the dry-ice bomb's shrapnel rained down in fragments, like a hundred tiny arrowheads. The Djaalik simply moved forward as he listened to the gentle sound of the metal bouncing off of his heavy shield, the wyvern however was not so privileged to have shielded itself from the blast.
Iron nails and steel shards cut into it's flesh, bounced off scales and tore holes in it's wings leathery wings. The beast howled and swivelled towards the iron giant of a man.
"Innefective..." the armoured adventurer muttered to himself as he lowed his shield to cover his body. Southern wyverns would have been stunned and deafened, rather than just merely wounded. It took Kor'Ak sometime to realise his mistake as he looked over the creature. It's ears seemed invisible, the holes barely visible beneath sheets of armour, too different from the sensitive, fan-like ears of the wyverns from his homeland.
Nevertheless, the blood that trickled from the creature's face and body proved evidence that his bombs weren't completely ineffectual, and to that end, he ducked low as he sheathed his sword, iron boots still pounding against the cracked earth as he broke into his charge.
He could feel his body tense before he crashed into the roaring behemoth. An all-too familiar feeling as he felt his skills kick into gear.

The fight would have to be over quickly, Kor'Ak knew he'd spent most of his MP already, and that keeping his health regeneration up would be essential to weathering through the dragonic creatures flames. The first true blow was struck as the warriors heavy tower shield crashed into the northern wyvern's head, accompanied by a sickening crunch as the beast's head jerked and snapped away from him.

Kor'Ak stomped on forwards, his free hand uscewing one of the canisters at his side and dropping a chunk of dry-ice into the water before closing it shut. With another swift movement, he pulled the canister from the belt at his waist and rammed it down the creatures gaping maw, the stunned wyvern's forked tongue simply lolling off to one side in it's daze.
Kor'Ak took the time to slam his shield against the wyvern's head once more before planting it into the ashen stone slabs, pulling it tight to him as he listened to the fizz and hiss of the canister now lodged inside of the beast's gullet. Once again he listened to that sharp, splitting KRAKOOM.
No more than a few shards of tiny scrap seemed to have escaped the beast's mouth, the previous hail of shrapnel from the first bomb seemed like a rainstorm compared to the few tiny 'tinking' noises that could be heard as shrapnel bounced weakly off his shield.
The djaalic peaked over his shield towards the wyvern, the beast lay on the ground, rivers of blood pouring from it's mouth like a dam had broken. It lay still, but any seasoned adventurer knew to ensure that such a dangerous creature was dead. The victorious giant strolled forwards, pulling his simple, worn blade from it's sheath once again. He moved towards the creature's back, looking for a place between it's scales around where it's chest was. Satisfied he'd found a suitable place, he grinned, plunging the blade to it's crossguard into the monster's back. Not so much as a groan escaped the hulking corpse.
Only now did he notice the small green creature scurrying along the cobbles towards a spear, clutched in the hands of a charred satyr corpse. Goblins... Killing it would hardly be worth the extra time he'd have to take cleaning off his weaponry. He turned to face the creature, brandishing his sword and yelling "Leave creature!" he may not actively go out of his way to kill it, but he certainly didn't want the little scavenger taking anything valuable from the dead. That was an adventurer's privilege after all.

A hiss from behind him. Just the ice.
A click, a spark lit within a wyvern's bloodied maw.
Maybe not just the ice.

Ætla Verǫld
AV Online was just a flash in the pan—a harsh, experimental land which lost most of its players in mere weeks. Only the dedicated few remained, carving out their destinies in corners of the vast abandoned world. Lily Quinn wasn't one of them. With a career worth millions in the esports world, she didn't have time for a game like Avo—but when an exclusive beta test for the new version showed up on her doorstep, she couldn't say no… as much as she wanted to. Literally hooked into the simulation, Lily reluctantly entered a world beyond anything she'd ever dreamed of. Accompanied by seven other beta testers desperate to save their beloved game, Lily dives into a vibrant, beautiful world, where mystery and adventure waits around every corner. Despite her reservations, Lily finds a joyful escape in Avo, shattering her cold, hollow reality. It was just a game though… until the group discovered they couldn't log out. Trapped in a game with no rules, and surrounded by cutthroat players eager to kill for a quick windfall, Lily and her ragged band have no choice but to fight their way out, or die in a game that has turned all too real. Hi there! I'm setting off on yet another adventure, come join me :3 Unusually for me, there's only one perspective this time, and it's quite a bit more action-oriented than I usually write. Don't worry, though: everything's still as character-driven as always, and I never get tired of writing dialogue. Just to acknowledge it up front: this story is heavily inspired by EVE Online and the many stories generated by that world. However, since this is a fantasy setting, not sci-fi, don't expect any real parallels. Chapter publish rate for this one will be whenever I write them, as with Epilogue. I don't expect to move as fast here though, since it's not for NaNo. The plan is chapters somewhere in the 4k-5k range, and hopefully frequently. The Last Science takes priority as always though. Special thanks to Reaver and Ace Arriande for pushing me to get this going, and to all my fellow writers whom I've stolen from been inspired by. You're all wonderful people and I love you Quick reminder: Patrons get to read ahead of what's published! Also, try my other works: The Last Science — A Tale of Modern Magic Epilogue — A Post-Fantasy Psychodrama What are you still doing on the synopsis? Get to reading!
