《This Kitty has guns》Chapter 24: We Meet Again

*BOOM*
After I blocked the fireball with my phantom claws, I was sent flying back into the room and crashed into the wall. From the impact of explosion I almost got my arms dislocated. Even as I weakened the fireball with 'mana devour' the wave from an explosion was still very strong. I am far from absorbing spells like that Irregular made from worms.
"Kitty!" rushed to me Phoenix.
"I am fine! Stay alert, there is still one more." I said while standing up.
After we dashed to the window, the last assassin escaped with shadowstep the moment he saw me.

Even though they don't patrol there, the explosion and gunshots still got the attention of city guards and once they arrived we had to meet with their captain.
While we were on the way, I raised my stats again. With three levels gained from the fight, it was enough for the system to alter my DNA, and now I had new ways to improve, and a lot of nutrients in my dimension could make it happen.
After I raised my endurance to 100, I got a skill 'Enhanced Stamina'. And when strength reached 100 'Enhanced Health' as well. From system message, it was clear that endurance and strength reaching 100 was the trigger for health, while endurance and agility for the stamina.
With those new skills, my health and stamina improved a lot. It was not necessary, but every bit helps.

"You again!" glanced orc at us when guards lead us into the office.
'The Office' was the size of a small Hall. There was at least ten guards here or there, while at the end of it the orc was sitting at the table with lots of papers on it.
This orc was a captain of the guards and we already meet him once. He was the same guy we meet when I got into trouble for calling Reveon Master.
I had no idea whats his name is, as everyone always called him 'Captain'.
"Ok, I think I got the main picture. We got three dead people and by your claim all of them were assassins." said the captain when one of the guards that lead us here, explained everything to him.
"Yes, can we go now?" I asked with impatience.

"What do you take us for?! This is not how we work. Just because someone said 'they were assassins', they don't become innocent. No witnesses to confirm your claim doesn't help your cause. We will wait for results of their identities .. and if there is nothing know about them, Rin will have to confirm if you are not lying." Said the orc.
"Rin?" I asked curiously, is she someone with a skill 'lie detection'?
"Yes, she is a pixie working for us." he said and started checking the pile of papers on his table.
"Every pixie has an inherited ability to see through lies, and even maximum level deception is useless against them. They also can't lie, or their own skill would kill them. Many nobles want to form a contract with them for this ability, but it rarely happens, as pixies don't like people that lie." explained Phoenix to me.
After some time, few dwarf guards entered the office.
"We confirmed their identities. One of them is Ash, an assassin with bounty on his head. The other is Nami, a ranger, she is a former adventurer and was kicked a year ago. And the last .." the guard hesitated a bit. ".. Kirion Kalh'dor."
"Kalh'dor .. just great. No other choice then, call Rin there." said the captain.
"I guess that Kalh'dor was someone important." I said while watching leaving guards.
"The man you killed might be not, but Kalh'dor family is. Aredia, Tallwall, and Riverwind are basically within their control. You are lucky our Lord is on bad terms with them, this might have ended very badly for both of you." said the captain.
And after waiting for a half hour, doors to the office opened again.
"Magra! Do you have any idea what the time is?!" we heard a high pitched woman's voice.
On the shoulder of a female elf guard was sitting a pixie, and her voice was way louder than it should be considering her size. She was just ten centimeters high and was a smaller version of a girl with transparent butterfly wings.
"I know! It's time for you to work." said the orc with a grin.
"No! I should still be sleeping in my bed. How dare you to drag me this early in the morning!" shouted pixie.
"Oh, I don't know. I just had a thought that it's very bad you can sleep without care while I have to work." said the orc still with a grin.
"Y ..you! You bastard!" shouted the pixie then started glowing and ice spike appeared out of thin air and launched at the orc.
The captain easily knocked the ice spike to the side and started to laugh, while pixie fumed with rage. Some guards chuckled while most paid it no mind, scenes like this must happen quite often.

After some time they finally stopped with their tantrum and I recounted the events of our fight with assassins. They used some enchantments to record everything into a crystal orb. As this involves some powerful nobles, it's probably necessary.
"So far she didn't lie." said Rin at the end of my story.
Hmm, interesting. I thought her skill might not work with my mental resistance, it doesn't check my mind? How does it work?
"This is a great opportunity. Send a copy of the record to the Lord. I am sure he will be happy with a member of Kalh'dor identified as an assassin or at the very least their accomplice." the Magra gave orders to one of the guards.
"Any ideas why they attacked you?" he asked while facing us again.
"I would like to know that as well. We killed Naeren, an assassin with bounty, but this shouldn't be enough of a reason to send assassins after us." I said lost in thought. "Especially when one them has such high status."
"Oh, it's you who killed Naeren? Not bad, he was a headache for quite some time. Hmm, There is no way its revenge. That Kirion would never risk exposing himself for something like this. They probably need something you got from Naeren." said the captain.
"Then I doubt it's mithril daggers. Hmm, maybe they need that portal stone?" I finally suggested.
"Portal stone?" asked Magra and this time Phoenix steped in to explain.
"That assassin could teleport away, and because of that, it was hard to get him. He was using marks at key locations to get away with 'this'." said Reveon while summoning the orb.
"Usual portal stones only guide, it's a portal that teleports us, not a stone. But this orb is different, it allows teleportation to its wielder and only needs a mark for destination. But without a keyword, we couldn't activate it. I was studying it to understand space time enchantments." further explained Phoenix.
"Maybe it leads to their base of operations?" asked the captain.
"If it was so important why would they leave it in hands of that weak assassin?" I asked still not convinced.
"I doubt the Templars would agree with you, Kitty. And you forget that only you could see him. Even I never saw him while he was alive. When we fought, I only attacked the place where your pebbles hit 'something'." reminded me Phoenix.
"If what you say is true then the possibility of this stone leading to their base is very high. Melody, Rin, bring the enchanter Arnis, say it's a matter of great importance." said Magra to the elf guard with Rin on her shoulder.
"So now I am your message girl?! Hey, Melody, stop, I am still not done talking with him." pixie complained when the elf guard walked out of the office.
After that, it was waiting time again. Captain Magra continued reading documents on his deck, while Phoenix meditated. With nothing else to do, I started transferring mana into 'mana potions'. It's a liquid that has an ability to store mana, but mana has to be transferred by someone. If you drink the potion right after it's made, you get nothing out of it.
"Hey Kitty, check out my status." suddenly said Phoenix, and I did as he asked.

'Quick Cast' he learned when we had a competition on hunting slimes. When I started using bow, he got scared of losing and this skill was born. It lets forming a spell quicker. I suspect that at maximum level, spells could be cast almost immediatly.
As for 'Absorb Heat', it was a fruit of his experiments with fire magic, when used my knowledge about nature of fire. Basically, it's an ability to freeze with a touch, as the heat energy is converted into mana.
And lastly .. 'Enhanced Mind'.
"You did it! This is great. Now it should be easy to learn body manipulation .." as I was cheering for his success, doors opened and elf in clothes of a mage walked in.
"So, what is this matter of great importance?" he said while looking at Captain Magra.
"We have a teleportation device that might lead to the base of assassins, but it needs a keyword to activate. Think you can do something about it? asked the orc.
"Let me see it." said the elf and Phoenix gave him the orb.
"Hmm, this might take a while. I will need the help of enchantments at my manor." finally said the elf.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Ellitis, a world of sword and magic. Massive in size, with most of its surface unexplored. Where dragons and spirits dwell amongst men and demi-humans, where gods and devils alike barter with mortals and immortals. Beautiful as it might seem, mystical even, Ellitis is not a world for the frail. It is a place where the strong prey upon the weak, and where the weak struggle with every fiber of their being to overthrow the strong. It is here, in an unsuspecting corner of this world, that an unfortunate soul was born an orphan by the mischief of beings untold. Eliot Wyon, formerly known as Eliot Alderman, was just a mediocre engineering student in his past life. Perhaps without any help, this life of his will be just as boring as his last. But throw in an impish ex-goddess to help him along. Maybe, just maybe, he could make this life a bit more interesting. ----------------------------------------**Author's Note**---------------------------------------- Hello Everyone, I am Vi, Cat Vi. This is my first attempt at writing a story. I am a complete beginner at this. The closest thing to an organized story I’ve ever written is essay reports back in high school. There might be syntax errors and weird language all over the place. So, apologies in advance. I’ll be trying my best to make this story as interesting as possible, and with your feedback I am sure I can make something nice out of it. Constructive criticism is appreciated. And you are welcome to comment any errors you might notice. I’ll try to fix them up as soon as I can. For now, I don’t have a schedule. But if the story gets traction, I will try to work something out. **Cover Image Drawn by me.
