《I am Urist》Day 17 - Part 5 - First battle

Climbing the wall, Unicy took command of the battlefield and saw the impending rat swarm approaching. Taking a glance to the left and right of her she saw fear lingering in the eyes of her soldiers.
Grabbing her long spear made out of bamboo she took her position along the wall and yelled, “They shall not enter our home, men prepare yourselves to stab the vermin to death. Wheel workers on my command get ready to spin as if your life depended on it. Corpse pushers and impalers listen to your wheel workers instructions. We will hold the wall!”
“HOLD THE WALL!” All the dwarfs yelled in unison.
“SCREE!”
The rats screamed back under the command of the rat king who ordered them to charge into the trench. Listening to their leaders commands rats threw themselves into the sharp sticks impaling themselves.
Although the trench was deep, large, and filled with countless wooden spears the rats were ruthless. The rat king was not deterred, he screeched sending an order to his lower brethren. Following their death order, hundreds and hundreds of rats impaled themselves along the spikes to make a bloody bridge of corpses.
Unicy chuckled and turn to the water mages Qrtia and Rytar, “Wash them into the nearby spears! Make them pay more blood to get to the walls.”
“Right away commander! Apprentice aid me!”
“Yes!”
““>””
A large water ball appeared behind the rats, it’s approximate diameter reaching eight meters. Seeing the large ball of water appear out of thin air the rat king hurried an order for his warriors to retreat. Only it was too late.
““FALL!””
The water mage duo shouted in unison sending their hands downwards causing the ball of water to descend at an accelerated rate. Unable to dodge, the rats were pushed into the trench where the wooden spears awaited.

Some of the rats tried to hold onto the bridge and saved themselves. The others weren’t lucky enough being impaled like those before them.
Watching on, the water mages duo held each other up weakly with their pounding headaches. They had put all of their mana and were currently feeling the after-effects of using such a large scale spell.
Unicy dismissed them and allowed them to rest. They had taken out a hundred or so rats which was pretty good. She had wanted to use the other mages to cripple more of rat forces but changed her mind when talking to Urist and Blood mage Vlad. They agreed to not show all their cards to the rat king for fear of him coming up with a counter.
Once the spell was over, it was time to get to stabbing and smashing.
“Wheel workers begin to spin! Men prepare to start stabbing on my command.”
Grunts from below, the pulleys began to spin to life pulling on the ropes causing the maces to spin with deadly force. When the maces were spinning at their peak the first rats started to cross the bridge. Those that attempted to climb the wall had their skulls and bodies crushed into a paste which caused the rat king great fury.
He screeched once again and ordered his minions to rush towards one part of the wall and use their bodies to stop the pulley. After a few of the quarter rats and one-half rat sacrificed themselves they managed to stop it.
The rat king ordered his brethren to climb to take the wall and begin killing the dwarfs. Those that climbed were met with spears from the sides of the wall and from the top.
And then an order came from the wheel worker who had his pulley stopped, “Push them into hell!”

“TO HELL!” Two dwarfs who had the strength skill replied before pushing with all their might on their pusher. A pusher was about a foot tall and three feet wide that ran underneath the mace pulley which had a three-inch clearance.
With such strength it was child's play for the dwarfs to push the small hill of corpses away, sending them flying into other rats that were still alive into their impending doom.
A shout came from above, “Clear to spin!”
With the spears pulled away, the wheel worker got to spinning his pulley bringing it back up wing speed. Furious the rat king sent his rats two more times in hopes to find some weakness to the wall’s defenses. He found himself repelled each time, forcing him to call for a retreat to save his army before it fell too low. Along with the call, the rats were told to bring whatever dead they could carry so they could be used for food.
Unicy did not open the gates and chase after the rats under Urist prearranged orders to not actively hunt the rat king unless they had a clear target. He didn’t want to easily give away information that they knew there was a rat king, hoping they could use that to their advantage.
Until then, the mission was to hold the wall and watch in hopes of spotting the bastard in control. With the enemy now on the retreat she took a breath of relief before raising her hand in the sky.
“The battle is won, everyone stand down! Good job men!”
Those along and behind the walls shouted full of happiness of beating back the wave.
“Alright everyone back to work! We need a team to clear out the trench and bring back the bodies before they rot. Open the doorway, but save mana in case we need to close it again. Make sure the rats are dead when you pick them up they might be playing dead so be careful.
The rest of you get ready to dissect the haul. Unicy I want you to keep a team on the wall as observers in case our rat friend decides to stop by.”
Everyone stared at who was talking to see Uria standing there relaxed. They weren't sure what to do since they all saw how she acted against the exploration team.
Uria looked at everyone with confusion, “What are you guys doing? We can’t waste any time in getting the defenses back up to speed. Come on let’s get mov--”
Jumping down from the wall Unicy looked at Uria with disgust, “The problem is with you. Don’t you remember what you tried to do with the exploration team? What gives you any right to lead!”
Uria confusion built up not understanding what Unicy was saying.
“What did I do with the exploration team? I followed your orders and readied myself to light the oil. Right, what did happen to the exploration team? Did they make it inside? Where is Urist? Is he alright?!”
Thrown for a loop Unicy couldn’t make sense of why Uria acted like she didn’t know anything. Her expression seemed genuine that it made her question her memories. She shook such thoughts away immediately. She wasn’t going mad, she knew what she saw so why was Uria acting like it didn’t happen?
Just as she was about to try and figure things out a voice rang from the cave.
“Uria, Unicy, and Vlad! The boss wants to see you!”

Author here, just wanted to say that if the synopsis did not sound as exciting as I had hoped it would be, try reading the first 10 chapters? I promise it won't be terrible! :) Whoops, forgot to mention, prologues don't count as chapters! If you've read this far, I might as well tell you what I was inspired by! However, this does NOT mean my story will be similiar in any way to the novels/stories/books listed below. By 'inspiration,' I refer to mainly how the characterizations plot devices, dialogue, conflict introduction/resolution, and thought processes are used and introduced in those works of literature. But in a way, you can interpret this list as, "if the author read and was inspired by these novels, then it's possible that we share similiar tastes, so I'll give this story a try." :) -Those Who Aspired to Become Gods: A darker fairy tale novel (My all-time fantasy favorite despite it being unfinished) -Forgotten Conqueror (Second all-time fantasy favorite) -Brandon Sanderson's The Reckoning trilogy (Third all-time fantasy favorite) -Kel Kade's 'King's Dark Tidings' -Brent Week's Night Angel saga -Red Rising trilogy -Infinite Realm: Monsters & Legends -Reborn: Apocalypse -Reborn: Evolving From Nothing -48 Hours a Day -The New World -Creep -Arrogant Young Master Template A Variation 4 -Can't Cure Deceit -Super Minion -Unparalleled -Unbound -Wake of the Ravager -Overgeared -Solo Leveling -The Tutorial Is Too Hard [email protected] -God of Money -A Snake's Life -The Snake Report -The Tower of God -UnOrdinary -Release that Witch!
