The gem carver really lost his head with his recent failure and defaced a local monument. Realizing it couldn't be fixed, he fled the scene after gathering his stuff so no evidence would be left behind. Soon enough this incident was discovered by others passing by and they hung their heads low in sadness and anger.

A single ruby was left on the ground, forgotten by the faceting man in his rush to leave and knocked away in his rampage. The locals took this gem and used it to hire a new sculptor, a professional who carved a new head into the remaining prism, even relenting to the pressure from his employers to make the nose upside down. Like that, the monument was restored, if not a bit shorter than before.

Left on the ground was the old head with the rock's lesser half as its nose. At this point, it was pretty much a rock again as no one bothered to take care of it as the seasons passed and it weathered down into an indistinguishable lump. The formerly loose cylinder that bound the rock to its likeness had now fused with the surrounding material, dragging the lesser rock with it. For it was now one and the same, no longer parts of a whole but the whole itself.

However, the new statue was not as popular as the old one. Visitors began to come less often, only passing by out of necessity rather than to see the landmark. Just another oddity in the forest, like a tree trunk that resembles a face, it went from an amazing thing that everyone wanted to see, touch, and feel, something to relate with and interpret, to just there. 'Oh yeah, that was a thing,' would pass through the minds of anyone who passed by, and would leave their thoughts just as fast.
