《The Life of a Dungeon》Chapter 30

POV Tsethem Adventuring Group
After Leire gave the offering to the dungeon spirit, the group started walking through the entrance into the beginning of the first floor.
“Alrighty guys, the intel that we have states that this floor should be a forest floor. But things may have changed since the report was given, so keep an eye out,” states Tore. “Leire, the guild has also asked us to try to retrieve any clippings of interesting plants. So you will be in charge of getting clippings. Samuel and Theodore, you are our healers, so don’t do anything stupid or go off on your own. And Niko, you have the best memory out of all of us, so you will be in charge of mapping out the path that we take on each floor and anything that we encounter.”
“Ya, ya. We know the rules, boss,” said Niko as he saluted Tore.
“Also, everybody, the dungeon spirit may be on edge if there were core stealers that came into the dungeon. So please be extremely careful and don’t take unnecessary risks.”
After listening to Tore, the group got out the things they needed and finally reached the first room. They came upon a small room with a couple of trees. They could see some rabbits run across the paths and into the foliage just from entering the room.
Tore was the first to enter the room and walk through it, with the others following him carefully. They then exited the room into another hallway. As they walked down the hallway, they reached a split in the path.
“Which way, guys. Left or right?” asked Tore.
“Why do you need to ask? We always choose left,” responded Leire.
With that, the group followed the tunnel to the left and reached another room. This room was slightly bigger than the first and seemed denser with trees. This was also where the first monster attack happened.

As they were walking through the room, all of a sudden, a dark shape came at them from the ceiling. Quickly, Leire threw a couple of knives at it, downing the monster. When they went to look at the downed monster, they saw a downed black and grey hawk with a wicked-looking beak and claws.
Leire took a knife and cut off both of its claws and took some tail feathers, and put them into a hunting bag.
“Wait up, guys, let me grab some trimmings from the plants in this room.”
Leire walked up to one of the pine trees and cut off a small part of a low branch with the pine needles. She also went up to one of the glowing vines and trimmed a small portion up. After she got the trimmings, she placed them into small crystal bottles and put them back into her bag.
While Leire was gathering specimens, Niko took this time to do a rough sketch of the rooms and paths that his group found and took since entering the dungeon.
Once they were both done, Tore got the group moving again. Just as they were about to exit the second room, the bare skin of Samuel’s arm brushed against a flower tentacle that was hanging down from a tree.
Samuel did not freak out, even though the tentacle was burning him like a jellyfish. He called Leire, who was wearing gloves, to take the tendrils off him so that he could heal himself.
The group gathered around Samuel as Leire pulled the tentacles off him. Samuel, who was holding in his pain, grunted as Leire carefully pulled the flower’s tentacles off his skin. Instead of healing himself, Theodore, who mothered the group, took care of the wound to save Samuel some mana for later in the dungeon dive.

The group, after the stint with the flower tentacle, was a lot more cautious. They cleared the second room and walked into the hallway. They walked a couple of metres before another split in the hallway appeared. They decided to turn right and go into the fork of the path. When they did that, they reached two separate deadends. After a bit of being turned around, they finally made it to the next room.
Before they entered, Niko had the group stop so he could draw and add new things to the map.
When they entered the room, they were instantly attacked by a group of kobolds. This surprised the group as they had not encountered one in the previous rooms. But they quickly got over their surprise and fought back.
Tore and the group quickly killed the kobolds and picked up all the loot that they dropped. After that encounter, they were a lot more cautious and actively looked for ambushes and traps.
When the group made it halfway across the room, they got attacked by another type of monster that they had not, so far, encountered yet. They were passing through an area heavy with vines, and one of them crept up behind them and wrapped around Theodore’s throat. Niko, who was the first to see this, cast a cutting spell and sent it towards the vine. The spell sliced the vine in half and loosened its hold on Theodore’s neck.
After Theodore got his breath back and was healed, the group made its way to the boss room.
When they got to the boss room, everybody was prepared, as there were no monsters that they could tell that dominated the floor.
When everybody had their weapons out and were ready to go, they entered the boss room. What greeted them inside was a large kobold with a dagger in each hand.
Tore immediately attacked the kobold, with Leire backing him up long-range. Niko was firing multiple types of classic spells, fireballs, water bullets, and the like. Theodore backed them up by healing any injuries that were incurred during the fight.
Samuel also had some light fighting with the boss, except he used hand to hand combat, with healing powers mixed in. He fought using a curse that drained the opponent’s health and healed the user when there was skin contact.
After a couple of minutes of intense fighting, the group was able to kill the first-floor boss. When the boss died, it dropped two silver bits and an enchanted dagger.
Tore collected the loot and passed the dagger onto Leire.
“Here, if you want the dagger, you can have it,” said Tore as he passed the enchanted dagger to Leire.
Leire accepted the dagger and looked at it. “This is a nice make,” said Leire as she examined it. “It has an enchantment to make it sharper than a regular blade. I think I’ll keep it if everybody was okay with it.”
The group all agreed that she could take this portion of the loot.
As everybody healed up and Niko recorded what they found on the map, Tore asked the group if they wanted to continue.
Lierre and Niko wanted to continue onwards, but Tore, Samuel, and Theodore thought it was best to stop here and report back to the guild. With everybody in agreement, they made their way back through the first floor and back to the village. By the time they reported back to the adventuring guild, they were exhausted.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
