《The Elementalist》Chapter Nine: The Black Slime

Slowly he worked his way through the rest of the other mother slimes, picking up tricks along the way to make the fight easier. For instance, it seems that the slimes were absorbing the water around them to help create new slimes, so if he siphoned the water away they would shrink much faster. That and at a certain point he could directly attack the mother slime before it had finished creating slimes. Soon he was able to finish off a mother slime in thirty minutes of fighting.
By the time Tide had cleared the cave of the mother slimes he was exhausted. He willed himself into the tunnel at the end of it though because he needed to see what was at the end of this cave. He wasn't going to walk out of here just to have to come back and fight through the respawned slimes.
Looking over his shoulders he saw that his faithful companion wasn't looking too hot either. He crouched down giving the pup a head rub.
“Only a little more bud.” The Wolf’s eyes shone a bit more with determination and Tide felt his own confidence rise as well. Readying himself for anything he walked forward. As he did he noticed the light change drastically, instead of the dim glow given off by the moss he was put off by the almost fluorescent light emitted from crystals in the next passage. Soon the path opened up into a much smaller cavern, the size of a house. Inside there was a pool of water and crystals embed randomly throughout the caverns walls. In the middle of the space was a single slime. It was the same size as the normal slimes, but the drastic difference was that it was pitch black.
Tide tried to analyze the slime in order to see its name and level, but was only give the monsters level.

Seeing no other choices Tide walked into the cavern. The slimes response was instant as it launched itself at Tide. Tide was caught off guard, normally slimes have a very obvious signal when they attack. Their surface usually jiggles a bit before they attack, but this slime decided to skip that step.
Tide managed to see the slimes attack coming at him in almost slow motion, but his body wasn't moving fast enough to dodge it. Flexing his back muscles Tide twisted his body, causing the slime to crash into his shoulder. He heard a crack before he was sent twisting through the air spinning.

Onyx let out a whimper as he saw tide get injured and quickly ran over to his side growling at the black which due to its momentum was stuck in the caverns wall.
Tide felt pain course through his shoulder and knew instantly he had broken it. Letting out a shout tide pushed himself to his feet. He left his staff on the ground and weighed his options. He had a full mana bar and had faith that he could do this. Noticing the slimes predicament Tide had time for a spell and hurriedly threw together a golem. By the time that it formed the slime managed to dislodge itself from the wall. It once again launched itself Tide, but this time he was ready.
Preemptively diving to the ground, the slime soared over him violently before once again lodging itself into the wall. Quickly Tide sent the golem out to smash the slime. Quickly reaching the immobilized slime the golem lashed out with a punch and much to Tides dismay the golems fist crumbled to dust. Tide at least had to give the golem props for effort because it then without pause lashed out with its other fist before it crumbled as well. The golem kept at it though and lashed out with its now stubby arms, until even those were reduced to dust.
It stood there for a second confused on what to do next before it slammed its head against the black slime. The only thing that accomplished was deforming the golems head and dislodging the slime from the wall. Instantly the slime launched itself through the golems chest basting it to smithereens.
Tide felt a bit guilty as he saw his golem be helplessly defeated by the slime. His sacrifice was not in vain though. It gave Tide time to ready his next move and showed what he was up against. With a sigh, he ordered Onyx to retreat back to the main cavern, with the slimes level of defense he wouldn't be able to do anything.
In his good hand Tide began to accumulate a ball of fire. It was a bit hard to control, but he kept it in check. Seeing the black slime once again lodged in another wall, he threw the ball a fire and directed it to the black ball of ooze. He let his hopes get up as he saw the ball hit the slime directly, but as the flame was extinguished so was his hopes. The slime was unaffected if not for the slight red glow now around the slimes surface. If anything, he had just made the slime more dangerous.

Tide once again had to throw himself painfully to the ground. His shoulder once again lit up in pain protesting the sudden movement but Tide ignored it as the slime banged into the cavern wall behind him.
Tide pretty much out of options had to hope that water would be effective against the slime. Gathering some water into a ball from the pool in the corner of the cavern he through it at high speeds at the slime. It let off a small spout of steam and instead of injuring it the slime actually absorbed the water and grew in size before falling back to the ground.
“Fucking hell” Tide shouted as he realized he was fucked. Nothing he had could injure the thing. Staring at the slime he was a slight tremor course through its surface before it launched once more at his.
Tide once more fell flat to the ground, this time the slime had aimed a bit lower and almost skinned him. This would have worried him but the slimes attack revealed how he was going to be able to beat it.
He pushed himself up and ran over to where the deep pool of water was. Looking back, he saw the slime sliding off the wall and a tremor once more rippled its body before it launched at him.
Tide tried to fall to the ground, but the slime had learned and aimed lower and hit Tides legs.
Hearing another two cracks Tide fell to the ground in agony. His plan had worked though the slime had fallen into the pool of water behind him. He heard a gurgling sound come from behind him as he saw a huge brown slime begin to emerge from the water.
Panicking Tide began to crawl away. He was only able to pull with his good arm and didn't make it very far before the slime fully emerged from the water and slowly was making its way towards him. Tide let out a cough and cursed himself for being such an idiot. His whole plan was to get the slime to absorb enough water to the point where it wasn't so dense and could be hurt.
“It probably would've worked if he was so severely injured.” He thought to himself chuckling. Just as the slime was about to reach him and he had made his peace, he heard a growl. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw Onyx with bright red eyes jumping on the slimes side biting and clawing at it. The slime quickly addressed the new threat and with a small bounce knocked the dire wolf away.
Onyx hit the ground hard and let out a whimper of pain. Tide felt pain blossom in his chest as he saw the wolf fight for him. Much to his surprise, Onyx shakily got to his feet and once again charged at the slime. He was once again knocked back by the massive slime, but got up this time bleeding.
Seeing how hard Onyx was trying, Tide scolded himself for giving up so easily. There had to be something he could do. Tide watched helplessly as Onyx was beaten down again and again, desperately trying to think of some way to kill the giant slime. He began to cry seeing Onyx’s pitiful struggle and determination to keep on getting up. The cub really was loyal.
His tears mixed with his blood and the water dripping from the ceiling of the cavern. Tide could bear to see Onyx die and looked down to see the pool of blood, tears and water accumulate. He looked into the pools reflection and saw the caverns ceiling. As he did he noticed something that gave him an idea that just might work.
Tide quickly sent all of his remaining mana up into the rock above him before he willed the base of a stalactite to weaken causing the pointed rock to fall piercing into the slime spearing it. With a large pop the brown slime splattered all over the cavern dead.

The Painter: A fantasy psych thriller and epic
*** June 21th Update ***- New chapters are being posted! I haven't figured out a schedule yet, but stay tuned!- Thank you to everyone who has read and reviewed, I'm happy to say The Painter is in the top 200 best-rated fictions. - Readers of The Painter have suggested reading through Chapter 6 before making a decision on this book.- The story takes place in the Lootverse, but you don't need a canonical understanding to appreciate the storyFinally, a warning or reader beware: This is not an action novel (despite the coming fight scene) but a slow-burn psychological thriller of sorts. For a time, the Painter's life was simple. He lived in the small town of Kinon (called Kinney by locals) with his wife, Kahriah and his son, Thesdon. The story begins with him alone and unable to travel more than a few hundred miles from his home. For 5 years he tried to chart his prison until one day a letter appears with a mysterious commission that will see him test his condition and his boundary. Set roughly 50 years before the impending end of days (from Loot canon), The Painter is a story about loss, grit, and exploration of a seemingly normal man in a world of magic and monsters. The Painter will follow the man on his adventure to restore his family, uncover his commissioners and discover the nature of his condition. Loot is the decentralized, global, community built fantasy world based on Dom Hoffman's art/tech experiment: Loot. Fun fact: The cover of our book is painted by the artist, who the MC is loosely based on and the same person painting the Banners (digitally) IRL for an art/worldbuilding project.
