《From Chief to the Emperor (Rewrite)》Chapter 10: No morality in these lands

They spent almost half a day in the open valley where the deer were usually spotted. Every time they approached a group, they were always discovered which led the deer to escape.
Edward sat down on a patch of grass while feeling greatly disappointed. He had such lofty ideas and yet he was stuck in the very first step.
‘Everyone’s hopes are pinned on me and the huge gamble I made with Titan will eventually end soon. I need a deer to make bowstrings using its tendons. Maybe I can dig a trap? But this ground is very solid and I lack any tools to properly dig.’
Finally, hanging his head down in failure, Edward made his way back to the cave. On his way, he caught a few rabbits for dinner.
By the time he returned, it was nearly night. Roc and Daisy had already returned. They had already lit a bonfire and were patiently waiting for everyone to come back.
‘That’s good progress, they are using fire as a tool by themselves instead of fearing it.’
“Big brother, we were waiting to eat a fat tasty rabbit barbecue. Hurry and roast some” Roc smiled and joined Edward’s side.
“Be patient brother, I will leave for you a tasty roasted rabbit leg but before we all get down to it, let me see how was your progress with the stones?”
Roc quickly presented a bundle of straight bamboo, which made Edward very surprised.
"Not bad! I didn't expect you to be so careful, this is exactly what I want!" Hearing that Light is complimenting him, Roc looked at the rest and opened his mouth: "Most of these were found by Daisy sister, I only brought the thinner looking bamboo’s down”
‘So Roc was the brute strength and Daisy was the spotter. That got a nice ring to it.’
“Big brother, we found a lot of the small stones and feathers you wanted and brought them back. You should look at them first. If it is not enough we will go again tomorrow to find more. There are a lot of those stone pebbles everywhere at the west hills.”
Daisy took a piece of leather that was carefully wrapped from her side as Edward quickly opened it and checked it.
He saw a few centimeters thick, fine and hard cyan shaded stones which were good raw materials for polishing arrowheads. (It means they found gemstones)
‘But what good were those pebbles if he had no arrowheads to sharpen? They did their part of the task and I failed mine.’
”Great! You two have really made me feel relieved! I will not be like a failed politician in the future with false promises!”

“Politician………?”
There were always new words coming from Edward. Although everyone seemed to understand what he meant from his tone but instead of wondering they all knew that whatever he said it would be nothing but something profound.
Night and Debro cleaned up the rabbits that were brought back. Everyone gathered around the fire as Edward made a rabbit meat barbecue while just talking and enjoying each other’s company. Truly the best time of the day was the barbecue or so everyone thought.
In their past life, darkness meant the end of the day and the rest of the time was to huddle in the cold and dark caves, sometimes to endure hunger and thirst. Those were the miserable and boring days.
Now that there was a fire, every day they could eat meat. They were surrounded by the warmth of the fire even during the cold night. It naturally made everyone huddle together like a bonfire and exchange stories and myths. They truly felt happy, something they couldn’t even imagine before especially at their previous tribe.
Edward wondered if the origins of all civilizations began like this. If humanity truly originated from people like Night or Roc or daisy. It felt weird seeing modern human natures showing glimpses in these savages like how they were gossiping around a fire. He wondered if that was how cultures were created and expanded.
"Sister Night, today I and Daisy saw Titan on the side of the forest. They were really amazing. They actually hunted a wild boar!" Roc swallowed a meaty barbecue and suddenly spoke out as if remembering something important.
"What? Titan hunted a wild boar?!"
Edward now had something to worry about. He felt like he had no appetite, especially because he had been running around for the last few days. His modern body wasn’t really used to everything yet and so he felt tired.
At the moment, he was leaning on the wall of the cave next to Night and closed his eyes to think about his current problems. He was shocked by the words of Roc! He never imagined Titan to be this good.
"Yes brother Light, I saw it with my brother at the time. My brother and I remained hidden as we checked on Titan. I saw Titan and his men carrying wild boars on the way back to their camp. They seemed very happy."
Hearing this, Edward could not remain calm!
An inexplicable panic swept his whole body! His back was full of cold sweat.
‘How can I lose to a bunch of savage barbarians? I am a 21st-century engineer, almost a great prophet in this era. And now I have actually fallen behind a savage...’
‘How many preys did Titan got?’

Bad emotions shrouded him in an instant, which made him feel frustrated.
"Oh--" Edward sighed and said in desperation: "Without a deer, you can't make a bow and arrow. What should I do!"
He clenched his fists tightly and stared ahead. Everyone looked at him with worry, unsure of his reaction.
Only Night was aware of the dilemma faced by Edward. She moved even closer and sat down next to him.
"Light, you said the bow and arrow are a kind of weapon, can only deer help you make them?"
“Night…. Not just deer ribs and tendons, but at the moment considering big games, only the docile deer are the best chance to hunt. Ferocious animals like boars and buffalos are hard with just us!”
Making bows and arrows was the key to being able to overcome Titan and his clan. Only then would Edward get the chance to settle down in peace and start building his foundations. It was an indispensable weapon, and it had to be made.
‘But what can we do now? Use tough plant fibers? Leather rope? These kinds of things are not flexible, and the arrows that are shot would have no strength at all.’
Without bows and arrows, there was no way for Edward to compete with the Titan. Not only he won’t be able to protect Night from Titan but his own life was in danger at this point. He felt afraid the more the thought about it.
"Brother Light, you just said tendon? Deer ribs? What you have been trying to get these two days are the deer ribs?" The delicate face of Daisy was vivid as she asked with a small smile.
"Well, deer ribs and tendons are very important to us, if we can't get it, our troubles will be big!"
There was never a concept of bow and arrow in the mind of Daisy. People in their time would not think about things after tomorrow. They were already busy surviving and had less time for innovation.
Even if Edward said that he had to hunt a deer to make a weapon to hunt deer, she could not understand what his dilemma was.
"If you only want deer ribs and tendons, I have seen one before, a dead deer left behind. A bit large in size.”
"Daisy, where is that deer now?"
Like a star that shone brightly in this darkness, Edward grabbed Daisy’s shoulder and asked in a hurry.
"Ouch, Light brother, you hurt me!" Daisy shouted, Edward quickly released his hand, his eyes full of expectations, even Night came together.
"My sister speak quickly; Light has been dying to get a deer for days!" spoke Night
"Sister, you know about Wolf from Cloud Tribe. We’ve been together several times but he found another girl and left me….” She seemed to be remembering the good times of her past before her face turned sad.
"Daisy, do you trust me, your Light brother?" Edward held his hands on Daisy’s shoulders, looking directly at her eyes and solemnly said.
"Trust."
"Why do you trust me?"
"I trust Night sister, she brought you, so I trust you too."
"Only this?"
"And... you are different from everyone else, you will make a fire, you can catch a rabbit, you let us eat, too.... I have a lot of things that feel very fresh to me."
"Silly Daisy, everything you said is nothing but something simple for me. I’d still do it all for a friend”
Edward put his hand down from Daisy’s shoulders and grabbed her hand.
"What I can do is far from this. I will make your life change dramatically, but now,"
He paused,
"I don't have a deer! If you want me to win the gamble with Titan, for the sake of your Night sister, you have to help me! I just need a deer and time. I’ll hunt you as many deer as you want but I need someplace to start.”
He continued after a word;
"I need your help, I don’t know Wolf but if he has a deer, we need it.”
"But...." Daisy scratched her head and her face was full of worry.
Edward understood what it felt like meeting again with your ex-lover. He himself understood more than others. He could understand her hesitation as she had her own pride. And he understood that if she was to ask a favor from the other party, it might mean sleeping together with them once again.
This was the way the original society of the world was at the moment.
‘Let's make a plan to fool that Wolf guy. Let's have Daisy bait him and somehow get the deer we want.’
But even Edward was not too hopeful of the result and it felt like it would go down the sex route no matter what he might try. His gut kept telling him that. There was nothing he could do but make it the least possible possibility.
Looking at Night and Daisy, he knew that their sense of values was different from his and this would be different from them compared to himself. He still felt like he was using Daisy.
‘What if I am really overthinking things? Does modern logic really work here…. I wonder.”
