“Isn’t this way too fast?” Silva asked quite surprised.
“Of course not!” Responded Ozpin “In fact, he has been waiting for a long time. After all as the headmaster of the Atlas Academy, he has his share of troubles. Especially with the Schnee Dust Company”
“So the announcement of the new field, together with the dust refining Mark, which can be easily made using only four energy gathering mark. Had helped the General put a leash on the President of the SDC”
“Because of that, Ironwood has been able to sanction the company for misuse of Faunus labor. As Atlas is no longer fully dependent of them, but he knows everything came because of your markings. So he truly pleased, and as a show of sincerity, he had given me this for you” Said Ozpin as he passed Silva a copy of the document against the Schnee Dust Company, signed by General James Ironwood.
“Though greedy. That man is intelligent, and knows he cannot win against James at the moment. So he has chosen to compromise, and in fact is been trying to join the cause. If you could phrase it like that” Ozpin finished.
“So it was like that” Silva smiled as he thought, his eyes looked blank as he saw the new notification that had appeared in front of them.

Inside a big room. Many different type of Faunus were surrounding a big desk. There were five seated members, and few members standing behind them. Most of the seated Faunus comprised the leadership of the White Fang Organization. But out of them, there were two members that stood.
A tall black haired muscular man, with a beard and yellow eyes. At his back, there were two children that looked around the age of 8 to 11. The girl shared many similarities with the man seated in front, with the only difference being the cute cat ears on top of her head. The boy on the other hand, had red spiky hair and black horns.
The second person that stood out was a young woman, with brown skin and black tiger marks on her body, black hair and orange eyes. Behind her two brown skinned men wearing red hoods, they looked similar to each other, showing their relation. The only difference being on having fox like ears, the other having a fox like tail.
The two of them caused the room to be still, the other members in the room knew that they represented the conservative and radical factions inside the White Fang. While the man opted to use peaceful means in order to obtain equal rights, the woman used violence in order to liberate the oppressed Faunus.
Finally the silence was interrupted by the woman “Ghira, do you truly believe that they are on our side? Even with all the status that headmaster can have, he had never done something like this before. And now he wants to offer us an opportunity. It sounds fishy to me”
The man called Ghira looked towards her and said in a harsh tone “Because of that same reason, I believe that with his great status he shouldn’t be plotting something. And for all that I know, the seat of High Leader is still on my power. So you should show respect, Sienna”
“Humph” the woman just dismissed everything by looking away. His status did not matter to her, as things went sooner or later, she would be the one seating on the high leader throne. Behind the man the two children eyes were different, while the boy looked at Sienna quite influenced, the girl looked troubled.

After a bit more of awkward silence. The door to the room opened and two people entered the room, none but Ozpin and Glynda. Seeing them enter, Ghira and the rest showed respect by standing as they entered. Noticing them Ozpin just nodded, before he stood next to the head seat of the table. As many though Ozpin was going to sit up, he just moved towards one of the chairs at the side and took seat, while Glynda stood behind him.
This action showed to the Faunus leader that Ozpin was not the one in charge of the meeting, but that he simply was on one of the supporters. Looking at the Faunus standing confused, Ozpin told them.
“It’s nice meeting you all, sadly I’m not the one that organized the meeting. I only helped him, by asking you all to come here” Ozpin said with small smile.
Hearing Ozpin, Ghira nodded and took the initiative to ask “If it’s not the famous Beacon Headmaster, who else could be in charge?” he said as Ghira took a seat, making the rest of the leaders sit too.
“You could say a surprising person. I only ask you not to underestimate him because of his age, as everything he says it’s true to the very core” Answered Ozpin
Surprised at the headmaster words, Ghira calmed down and nodded towards him. Finally after a few minutes, the door to the room was opened once more. At this moment every Faunus turned their heads towards it. Only to be bewildered completely, even the children behind Ghira were completely speechless.
Yet this did not matter for the one who entered the room. As he confidently came in and took a seat on the head chair. As he moved in, he did not once looked at the members of the White Fang. But adjusted a few papers that he brought with him in complete silence. The one that entered was no other but Silva.
Seeing that the one who entered the room was none but a child, the silent moment was destroyed by a woman voice “Are you joking? Headmaster Ozpin, I offer you my respect as the leader of the Beacon, but this taking everything too far”
Hearing her, every Faunus in the room was on her side. Even Ghira thought this was something unrealistic, seeing this Glynda was about to answer only to be cut short by Silva.
“Miss Sienna, I ask for forgiveness if my presence in the room looks like a joke for you. But I’m afraid that this is no joke, as I’m the reason why the headmaster called you. Even with all the face the headmaster of one of the four greatest huntsmen academies in all remnant can have, I believe he would not do such a thing” Silva answered politely as he had expected something like this to happen, so he was already prepared.
Listening to the words Silva spoke. Sienna could not help but be speechless, even someone as brazen as her, had to be quiet. After all everything was true, a man in Ozpin position would not make such a joke. Seeing her so silent, Ghira said “I’m apologize for her words, but I don’t believe they are inappropriate”
Ghira bluntly declared “I’m afraid that in our eyes, the only thing we see is a simple child”
Giving Ghira a small smile, Silva responded towards him “I understand your concern Mr. Belladonna. But I’m afraid that if I were to simply leave the room, you would lose the biggest opportunity of all. Just for treating me a simple child.”

“Opportunity?” Hearing him say that. Ghira was stunned, as those were the same words that Ozpin used to arrange the meeting “I understand, then care to explain us. What is the opportunity you are talking about?”
“It’s the opportunity to change the Faunus situation, the Kingdom situation, even the World situation” Silva said confidently, his answer stunned the whole Faunus.
“In other words, if you are willing to listen. I can offer you an opportunity of cooperation to improve everyone’s future” Silva continued.
“Even if you were to say that! How can you….?” A little skeptical of his words Sienna tried to interrupt, only to be silenced by Silva’s hand.
“I understand it can sound unbelievable, so let me first show my sincerity towards you” as they were not close to each other, Silva looked at Glynda signaling her. She immediately nodded and used her semblance to move a few of papers to each of the five leaders of the table.
When they received the papers, everyone looked at them quite confused. Yet as the read them, each of their eyes popped open. While Sienna was the one most affected, as she stood up and her voice shook as she stuttered with the papers on her hands “This... This is?” Her behavior only served to confuse the standing members. But she was not the only one who showed a strange behavior, the rest was not better.
Looking at their confused faces, Silva started talking “This are legal documents signed by the Headmaster of the Atlas Academy, General Ironwood. Enforcing protection for the Faunus labor workers, forcing the Schnee Dust Company to change their treatment toward laborers and raising their payment”
After Silva spoke the rest of the Faunus were just as shocked as their leaders, and while disrespectful they quickly moved to their sides in order to take a better look. Causing a small commotion as different voices resounded in the meeting room, Ghira even took out his scroll in order to make a few calls.
Realizing that it will take some time. Ozpin looked towards Glynda, making her sigh. Leaving towards a corner of the room, she brought two cups of hot cocoa giving one to Ozpin and the other to Silva. Giving her a low thanks, Silva took a small sip. His hand shook a bit, even as confident as he appeared to be. Silva was actually really nervous on the inside, as he was betting a lot on this meeting.
After finishing the cup. He was finally able to calm himself down, as the commotion died Silva moved his eyes towards Ghira. Only to find him looking back at him with a stunned face. “It’s true, I have confirmation from some of my people in Atlas, but how?”
“It’s simple. Because the things I can offer to them, are way bigger than the ones the Schnee Company can offer. But with all of this said, I believe that I have finally dispelled your doubts, right?” As the question came down, the whole Faunus unconsciously nodded.
After agreeing with him, Ghira politely said “I apologize! I looked down on you, I guess one can never judge a book by its cover. But you haven’t explained what do you seek with us, neither have you introduced yourself”
Hearing Ghira, Silva nodded and said “My name is Silva Branwen, and what is seek is cooperation. You see the reason why I’m able to put Atlas on my side, is because of a type of technology only I can offer” Right after, Silva gave a few explanation of the power of his semblance. And made a few examples using his ability for them to see, dispelling any kind of doubt they could have. For the Faunus, even though his last name sounded familiar to some, they were more concerned about Silva explanation.
“I get it! So that’ why! The field of aura technology is something truly filled with mysteries, but to think that it could give such benefits” Ghira sighed as he said. After Silva long explanation and demonstration, he was finally convinced. Even more when Ozpin interrupted by backing up and saying, that it was accepted in Atlas as a new field of research.
After seeing that everyone followed him, Silva continued “The reason of why I say cooperation. It’s because there is a special type of mark that I can offer you, and that can only be inscribed by you” After Silva said this, the expressions of all the Faunus changed. Most of them were eager to know, only Ghira and Sienna remained calm, which showed the skills as the two faction leaders.
“You see my markings of enchantment, can boost weaponry because it creates a path where aura can fluidly pass. But these markings can’t work in the human body directly, as we already have a pattern set inside our body. Even if we were to enchant our clothing, the result will be nonexistent as they don’t have any special trait” at that moment the eyes of Ghira changed. He understood something the moment Silva mentioned trait.
Seeing this change. Silva smiled, as he knew he had managed to pass his message towards Ghira “Just like you thought Mr. Belladonna. The kind of mark only the Faunus can inscribe, it’s the one that passes down the power of your own trait into an object, for example a garment”
“This is what I can offer you. A way to destroy the differences between Humans and Faunus, while at the same time benefiting us both” Silva said. The moment he finished, Sienna abruptly said “Isn’t that just gifting our power to the humans”. Her words caused some Faunus eyes to change. Looking at them, Silva understood that this was the most important moment. In the radical faction of the Faunus, a small amount of them felt hatred towards humanity behavior.
Choosing his words carefully, Silva told her “I must say will you are not wrong, you are not right”
“You see. A professional huntsman, is able to bridge the differences of power between races. So while it’s helpful for some them, strong huntsmen won’t need it. This mark is created for young huntsmen, and while it enhances the abilities of a Human huntsmen. For Faunus huntsmen, the result is even greater”
“So the marks are only used to raise the survivability of the young generation, once they become professionals and their aura had reached a certain point. It won’t be no longer necessary, as their abilities will be completely dependent on aura”
“But by doing this, you will be able to change the opinion of the younger generation. Raising the importance of the Faunus in the society, and gaining the support of the population. Eliminating the discrimination little by little. This is all I can say, now the decision is yours” concluded Silva.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time. On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
