Chapter 55: Calamity(3)
“Leave the weird one alive.” As Urt was about to kill Lumina, I stopped him midway. I need to ask her about what they discussed before. I wanted to know what we were facing in the future.
Urt grabbed hold of her head and raised her to his level, letting her legs and hands which already broken beyond compare to dangle in air uselessly. I knew she was still alive, although barely. Under my command, Urt broke her jaws first. It was to prevent her from committing suicide. Often in situations like this, assassins commit suicide when faced under unfavorable conditions.
Such was the case often in the stories I have read. Therefore, I took precautions right from the beginning.
I should have asked her for the details. But knowing her identity as an assassin, I knew she would surely play with me. And I am pretty dumb to outplay her. Therefore, I had thought of a different plan.
“Shouldn’t we kill her as well?”
“Of course not.” I denied Logier flatly. This dumb pig, what would he know about how big of a crisis we were going to face? If the situation was how I thought it was, then we all are really in big trouble.
“Urt, did you find where those humans hiding?” Looking at the barely alive Lumina, I enquired. Those guys were necessary for my plan to work. Moreover, I had the absolute confidence that I can find the truth from them. After all, I didn’t necessarily lack chips that I could use against them.
“Let me ask them again.”
I waited patiently as Urt communicated with his minions. Meanwhile, I kept an eye out on the defeated Lumina in case she tries something funny. Although we broke all her bones, still it's not a crime to be too careful, right?

“They have found them, master.”
A few moments later, Urt informed me.
“Good, let us go and meet them.”
Coincidentally, the place those guys chose to hide was the same place where I killed the goblin lord.
At the time we found them, that blond knight and that other man were resting below a tree, covered by thick bush. Perhaps it was due to their exhausting battle, their awareness of their surroundings was non-existent.
They didn’t find our presence even though we weren’t actively hiding them.
It’s Not like we could in the first place, anyway.
“Who is there!?” They only reacted after we deliberately made some noise. The first one to respond was obviously the blond knight. He pulled out his sword and looked at the darkness before his eyes with knitted brows.
“Calm down, human.” I deepened my voice, making it sound mysterious. Although I spoke in fluent human language, due to the weirdly developed voice box of an Adult Dream Weaver, the blond knight found it a little hard to understand me.
“Who are you?” Not relaxing his guard a bit, the blond knight kicked the other knight awake and warned him about the situation.
It was only then I realized he was actually sleeping. Nothing could be visible with those helmets on their heads anyway.
“Like I said, calm down, human.” I was really having fun while talking like this. If it wasn’t for the emergency situation, I would have continued to play with them a bit more. “I am here, to do, hmm, what you humans call it? Trade! Yes, its trade!” I finished, still sounding like a mysterious entity that would often appear at odd times around the main protagonist in fantasy books.
“Trade?” I could see the confusion on the blond knight's face. I couldn’t blame him either. It was very weird to hear a mysterious voice calling for trade. “What do you want to trade? As you can see, we don’t have anything that might satisfy you.” He inquired further.

A chuckled left my lips. It was loud and was probably audible to them.
It was intentional.
“You don’t have anything that might interest me? Who said that?” My voice still had a hint of mirth, as if I am toying with them. “In fact,” I continued after a brief pause, “you have something that is of great interest to me,” I added.
“What is it?” The blond knight didn’t lower his sword or relaxed his stance. In fact, after hearing me, he tensed even more than before.
Hmm, I guess its time to stop toying with them, thinking of this, I sighed at a loss.
“Don’t be alarmed, human.” I paused for a moment. “What I need is information.”
“What information?” The blond knight asked back. He still hadn’t loosened his guard. Moreover, he was giving off a very threatening vibe. As if, we would regret it a lot if we made a single wrong move.
I signaled Urt to throw the body of that Lumina.
When the body of Lumina landed at the foot of the knight, his face became a sight to behold. It rapidly transformed from surprise, anger, relief to puzzleness. Finally, he settled for an emotionless face and asked back, “What do you want to know?”
“Those guys talked about some army marching to this place.” I paused to find the right words for it, “I want to know the whole truth.”
“The whole truth?” There was no end to the knight’s astonishment. “Who are you?” He couldn’t help but ask.
“I am an inhabitant of this place.” I dropped a hint, “Now, answer me.”
“Hmm, alright.”
The blond knight then narrated everything about Owl Bandits and their gathering of the mercenary army to tackle the orcs. My legs nearly gave in when I heard about the facts.
It was a calamity.
Moreover, the root of the trouble was my own cowardice in the past.
Had I not let those humans in the past go, I wouldn’t have to go through such a calamitous time.
However, it's too late to regret it.
The situation was precarious but I didn’t panic. I knew too well, if I panic, then we will really die. No matter how much the situation worsens, I mustn’t panic.
However, even though I didn’t want to panic, the situation was so horrible that it made me feel hopeless.
This feeling, I had forgotten it ever since goblin lord’s death.
“Human.” Since I couldn’t think of an immediate solution, I tried asking them for help. I still have two more bargaining chips in my hands. “Do you have a way to make that army not come here?”
“Sorry, but I am powerless.” The knight rejected flatly.
What the hell!?
I was stumped. Even if he didn’t want to help, he shouldn’t have to deny this bluntly!
I felt a bit of anger surging.
“Human, don’t be this hasty to deny.” I insisted. “If you help me with this problem, I can give you back those two humans that dared to intrude upon my territory.”
“What?” it wasn’t the blond knight, but the other one who shouted. I seem to have hit a sore spot somewhere.
“What?” I repeated.
“Those humans, you mean to say, they are still alive!?” The blond knight seems to be a to-the-point type.
“Indeed, they are,” I revealed. “I haven’t killed them, yet.”

Fallen
Hundreds of years ago, the servant god Elsyn declared that they would destroy humanity entirely, explaining it as their duty as humanity’s peacekeeper. When the gods saw it fit to send someone to oppose the fallen servant, Iztris—the gods’ own servant and follower—visits Cheryn. Iztris requests the aid of Alyson and Jacob, the oldest two heirs of Cheryn and the only ones given the gods’ offer of the ‘assurance of victory,’ and the heirs agree. There will come a time when humanity does fall—but none of them would allow that to happen by the hands of a being just as flawed as mortals. I recommend reading the story by volume, instead of by the order the chapters were posted. This story was beta read by Mad Sadie. Many thanks! Please note that some characters use different pronouns depending on the chapter’s view and the speaker. Iztris, for example, is referred to with neutral pronouns by Elsyn (in most cases) and themself, and after being introduced as such they are referred to with male pronouns by Alyson and Jacob.
