《NEW EARTH - A World of Chaos》Chapter 70: Alyssa's Lair(2)

Above Li Wei's head, Alyssa was staring at the party of five with a mocking expression. The Spider Queen had a human body with the exception of the legs. Instead of having a pair of legs, she had 8 spider’s legs; they were hideous and hairy. Her skin was greyish and she was bald, giving her an unattractive alien look. Her eyes were completely white, devoid of irises and her fingers were so sharp that they looked like claws.
At this moment, Alyssa was upside down, her hairy legs were holding on the spider web on the roof of the cavern.
"How dare you kill my daughters," said Alyssa in a rattle.
As she spoke, 10 other spiders appeared and started to go down the roof by using strings of spider webs.
Li Wei, Titan and Silent Day quickly moved in order to protect the mage and Bright Sun. The spiders were slowly approaching. As for Alyssa, she used her long legs to move along the wall, towards the eggs. Although her legs were thin and looked like spikes, it did not seem to damage the spider web on the walls.
Before the spiders could reach the ground, Bright Sun and the mage both activated their rings' skill. They both had the same one that contained the same skill: [Fireball]
Small spheres of fire appeared in the two girls' hands. The spheres were not very large, but Li Wei could already feel the heat coming from them. They quickly raised their hands and tossed the Fireball towards the incoming Spiders.
However, they did not aim at the spiders but rather, at the strings linking the spiders to the roof. This way, they would burn the strings, causing the spiders to fall and take damage! The advantage was simply that instead of hurting only 2 spiders, they would be able to hit at least 6 of them. Although the spiders would take less damage from falling, considering the height, the total amount of damage dealt to all the spiders would be greater this way.
The Fireballs were not stopped after burning the strings, they continued to fly until they hit the roof that was covered with spider webs. The spider webs caught fire for a moment, but it quickly died down, only leaving behind some burn marks. The spider web was actually resistant to magic! Although players did not have access to Fire Magic yet as skills and could only use it through equipment, it would be disastrous if a simple fireball could burn the whole lair down. As a result, the web had magic resistance properties! They would burn for a moment, but the magic elements would be quickly drained out; naturally, if a powerful level 40 fire mage came here to burn down the place, it would be a very simple task to him.
Having lost the connection between them and the roof, six spiders fell on the floor as "-12" appeared above their head. They were disoriented by the fall, but they did not have time to react as they were attacked by Li Wei and Silent Day.
After fighting spiders for 20 minutes, the party already became quite skilled at dealing with these insects. They quickly noticed that the spiders had different fighting style and the one that just fell, were the one that relied heavily on their poison to deal damage.
Taking them out first was the best course of action. They had similar stats to the Forest Spiders and therefore, did not last long under Li Wei and Silent Day's combined attacks.

As for Titan, he turned to face Alyssa. Compared to Lich Longsoul, Alyssa would not stay idle and someone needed to divert her attention. The paladin was naturally the best suited for this task.
Li Wei was fighting two spiders simultaneously, the two had small bodies and were green in color. They continuously spit out some poisonous liquid which Li Wei easily dodged using the Gliding Steps. However, he could not waste too much time on these spiders, there were more that were coming down the roof!
The two spiders were slowly retreating, moving towards the other spiders that just landed on the ground. Seeing so many enemies near each other, Li Wei activated his [Myriad Sword Dance]
More enemies meant more targets and more combos. It also meant that he would need to dodge or parry more attacks if he wanted to maintain his combo! Fortunately, he had the Gliding Steps which was a skill he could use in the middle of his combo without disrupting it! It was extremely useful to dodge or even redirect his attacks to hit the enemies.
On another side of the room, Silent Day was easily dealing with three spiders at a time. It was both due to her skills but also thanks to the two buffs from Bright Sun: [Empower] and [Haste] which gave her both strength and speed.
Silent Day hated insects, especially spiders. Although the game made them bigger and less disgusting, she still found them extremely repulsive and violently stabbed them whenever she could.
She jumped to the side to avoid a spider's spit and quickly activated [Flurry Stabs], taking out the remaining HP of one spider. When she looked at how the rest of the team was doing, she was surprised to see that Li Wei was dealing with more than 5 spiders at a time.
"Hmmp, he got stronger so quickly! I must not fall behind!" said Silent Day to herself. At the same time, she charged at the nearest spider.
Bright Sun was standing next to the mage, she was keeping a close look at everyone's status! It was her job both as a leader and as a priest to ensure proper coordination and keeping everyone healthy. Fortunately, it looked like everyone was familiar with each other and the fight was going smoothly.
Three out of the ten mob spiders were already dead. A fourth one quickly followed as the mage used her [Mana Burst] at the group of spiders.
Bright Sun quickly used [Heal] on Titan who just blocked Alyssa's leg with his shield. The paladin was managing the aggro of the boss by himself!
There was only a difference of one level between the two. He was able to more or less hold his ground! Alyssa kept trying to bypass him to attack Bright Sun and the mage, but thanks to [Taunt], he managed to hold her attention.
Two minutes went by and all the mob spiders were lying dead. Only Alyssa was still alive, but she still had more than 90% of her HP. She was a quite powerful boss with 1500 HP with high defenses to physical attacks.
Unfortunately, as Li Wei took down the last spider, he did not have any target left near him and could only end his combo. His HP bar was still quite full while he had half of his MP left.
Without hesitation, he quickly charged at Alyssa from the right.
"Let's go!"
Hearing that, Silent Day also reacted and used her spear to Attack Alyssa on the left. They timed their attacks perfectly to strike at the same time.

The Spider Queen was quickly overwhelmed, she violently swung her claw-like hands at Titan's shield, while raising 2 of her 8 legs to use them as spears. The end of her legs was sharp, they scratched Titan's shield, taking away the paint.
She fought back as much as she could but whenever she was about to spit some poison, the mage would intervene and cast a spell.
As her HP fell down to 75%, Alyssa let out a powerful high-pitched scream! It was painful for the ears, but it also had a powerful knockback effect like Howl. Li Wei was forced to take a few steps back as he heard the scream! Although he was already prepared for that, he could not help but want to protect his ears.
Fortunately, the scream did not last for long as the mage quickly cast [Mana Bolt] towards Alyssa, disrupting her skill. This was quickly followed up by [Mana Bind] to prevent her from climbing back to the roof!
The spell would not last for long, but it was enough for Titan to intervene and get back the aggro. The fight continued as Alyssa was mercilessly attacked from all side. She had more HP than Lich Longsoul, but under the constant attacks, her HP bar quickly reached 50%
This time, she did not let out a scream but rather, her white eyes turned blood red. A faint glow appeared on her hands as she viciously attacked Titan who was right in front of her. Immediately, the paladin felt the pressure on him double.
Alyssa's Strength Stat just obtained a serious boost and therefore, even if he correctly blocked the attacks, Titan's health was still decreasing at a steady rate.
Fortunately, Bright Sun was ready and healed him up at the right moment.
Alyssa looked like she had lost her sanity, she did not even care anymore about being attacked by Li Wei and Silent Day. She viciously attacked Titan, to the point where his HP already reached 60. It sounded like a lot but that also meant that he had lost more than 200 HP! More importantly, Bright Sun's [Heal] was not off cooldown yet.
The party already understood each other to some extent. Titan activated [Bash]. Alyssa took a step back from being hit by the shield, but before she could scratch the shield again, Li Wei stepped up and used his swords to parry her claw-like hands.
[Cling]
His hands trembled for a moment under the shock, but Alyssa quickly pulled her hands back and once again tried to scratch him. He succeeded in controlling the aggro, but there was no way he would be able to last for long. Just parrying already took out 5 HP. However, he only needed to buy enough time for Titan to drink a health potion.
Although he still had some HP, it was better to be safe and so, they opted for this strategy. Alyssa was fierce but with the help of Silent Day, they managed to pin her down.
Ten seconds later, Titan was back with 80% HP and once again took the aggro.
Another 30 seconds went by as Alyssa's Health finally reached 25%. It was the last phase! She moved her long legs to get some space between her and her attackers and once again let out a scream. However, this time, her scream was not high-pitched, it was only loud!
And as she did that, another sound resonated through the lair. "Crack crrkk"
In the nest of spider webs, the eggs started cracking! The greenish-white eggshells were now covered with cracks! And a second later, a total of 3 spiders came out of the eggs. They were still covered with some viscous fluid but readily started moving their legs to move towards the party.
One might argue that they could have directly attacked the eggs when they entered the room to prevent this issue from popping up now. However, it would have made no difference! Simply because those spiders were explosive spiders and would deal damage as the eggs would explode. Even if they went early to destroy the eggs, Alyssa and the other spiders would immediately react and ambush them.
As for magic, the reason the nest was made of spider web was precisely to protect the eggs from magic! The best class to deal with these eggs would be the ranger but unfortunately, none were present in this party.
The new-born spiders only had 10 HP but were extremely fast! As soon as they came out of the eggs, they rushed towards the group! Taking some damage would be inevitable!
The best thing to do in this situation was to bring the spiders away from the party. Li Wei and Silent Day quickly moved and attracted the 3 spiders in different directions. Silent Day attracted one of them while Li Wei took two.
The spiders exploded, releasing the viscous fluid everywhere. Fortunately, it was not poisonous, but the liquid was still. Silent Day hated spiders but for the sake of the team, agreed to take one explosion. In the end, she only lost 15 HP.
As for Li Wei, he lost 30 HP, but he was still fairly healthy. With the explosive spiders dead, only Alyssa was remaining and she did not have any more tricks up her sleeves. Under the combined attack of the party, Alyssa ended up letting out a scream before closing her eyes forever!
[System prompt: Congratulation for completing the Time Attack: Alyssa's Lair. Your final time is 23:31]
The whole party let out a sigh of relief as they received the system prompt! 23:31 was an excellent time considering that it was their first try!
"This was a great run! Good job!" said Bright Sun.
"Ah, really disgusting! They should not have put this disgusting fluid!" complained Silent Day as she tried to remove the viscous fluid on her boots.
The mage giggled at the sight, "Don't worry, it will disappear as soon as we leave the Time Attack!"
"Really? Then what are we waiting for here? Let's go quickly!"
Titan and Li Wei quietly looked at the three girls, "It does not really matter since we are coming back for a second run!" said Bright Sun.
"AH! Cai Die! I should have gone with the other group! Even if they have The One Hero is there, at least, there are no spiders at the Island of Desolation!"
Quickly, the party exited the Time Attack and re-entered it! Having already cleared it once, they became more confident and ran through the Lair.
Li Wei was constantly looking for any tricks or loopholes but unfortunately, he could not find any! When he asked about burning the spider webs, the mage quickly explained to him the mechanism behind that.
In the end, he remained pensive during the entire Time Attack, trying to find how the solo player actually managed to clear the lair so quickly!

In the midst of all this, Eremus and Ducis, two insignificant boys born with nothing, to nothing, develop a grand ambition to conquer the world and rid it of the concept of war forever. However, now he must match wits with the greatest minds of the land, and he may find that he has bitten off far more than he can chew... Note: This is a story I wrote when I was in high school, and have only recently moved it here to Royal Road. It was my first stab at writing an original fiction of my own, and though I had many things planned for it, I don't think I'll be continuing this now or in the forseeable future.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.

Marakar
Far from the exploration he yearned to go on, Rae, the Kijah prince, finds himself in the middle of the impending war between Kijah'dar and Ga'ani. Unknown to him, or to the rest of the states, the Kijah Magister plots to overthrow the queen, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his plans. Marakar is a fantasy adventure series about the island states of Mar’narana (with focus primarily on the two states, Kijah'dar and Ga'ani). Tensions between the big players are rising, with more and more plots getting revealed, and powers are unexpectedly shifting. As the string of seemingly unconnected events grows taut, the smaller nations suddenly find themselves into the midst of things, struggling with the sudden shifting of their boards. On a more meta note, I am trying to develop two storylines parallel to each other. As you might have noticed, odd-numbered chapters are very different from even-numbered chapters. That’s because those are the two different storylines; odd-numbered chapters are in the present, while even-numbered ones are in the past. Once the two eventually meet I'll continue with just the present storyline. This story can also be found here where it currently updates every other Sunday (about twice a month). Feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read. :) tw/cw list (please take care of your mental health!
