Chapter 19: Virtual Battles
Yulian immediately accepted all three missions.
“Display battle status.” After he softly said these words, a blue screen flashed before Yulian.
[HP (Hit Points): 100%
EP (Energy Points): 100%
P-STA (Physical Stamina): 100%
M-STA (Mental Stamina): 100%
Current Status: Perfect Condition]
After this, Yulian tested out some commands. After finishing his tests, Yulian immediately left the house he was in.
It was time for the hunt to begin.
…
Outside the house he had been spawned in, Yulian looked around to find himself in a forest. There were all sorts of trees everywhere. Green grass dotted the landscape, and many shrubs and bushes were littered around. There large trees with fruits dangling, and wildflowers scattered all around.
Without paying mind to this beautiful scene, Yulian barked out a command. “Display minimap.”
A real-time map of the area was displayed, with blinking dots showing the nearest enemies. On top of the map, bright letters flashed ‘Area 1 – Hilly Forest’. Yulian perked up when he saw that the nearest blinking dot was just a few meters ahead of him.
Yulian looked around, exploring the surroundings with his eyes. Finally, he saw a sleeping golden monkey, his back slumped on top of a tree branch. Yulian thought for a moment, before picking up a stone from the ground and throwing it at the branch.
Smash! The thick stone ripped through the wood connecting the branch to the tree in a moment, throwing the monkey down. As the monkey woke up and lightly fell on top of another branch, it noticed Yulian. It immediately leaped down, claws bared to slash Yulian.
Yulian did not move until the monkey’s claws flashed near his eyes. At this moment, he walked four steps behind. Within a blink of an eye, his 7 foot long saber slashed out. A golden bladelight pierced the monkey’s skull in a flash. One blow, one kill.

[1/5 Goldfur Monkeys killed]
[30 star points gained]
His first kill completed, Yulian shook his sword free of gore and returned it to his hand. Looking at the virtual map of the region, he saw that there were several monsters moving about in pairs or alone. This was only the outskirts, the greater number of monsters were located in the core.
…
Like this, Yulian continued along his path, exploring further and further into the virtual forest. Inside, he fought quite a few monsters. Finally, 12 hours had passed by in the virtual world. Day had turned to night.
[Ongoing Quest:
1… Slaughter 11/15 Redfur Mastiffs
2… Slaughter 3/10 Twinfang Cats
3… Slaughter 5/5 Gold Monkeys]
Yulian had ended up killing a large number of beasts. He was only some time away from completing his quests. He had already decided that he would log off after completing the missions. Even though he would be spending less than an hour in reality, he was already tired of the countless battles.
In truth, he wasn’t even slightly challenged. Even so, the pressure of one battle after the other built up and he was longing to return.
Yulian looked at the virtual map. Now, the monsters has stopped moving about independently and got together in a horde. 14 blinking dots flashed a hundred metres away from Yulian.
…
The plain was filled with green grass. Small bushes and herbs filled it and there were a few trees scattered around. In the middle of the plain, the grass had been destroyed, the sign of a furious battle taking place.
Five Redfurred Mastiffs, large dogs with red fur on them, were attacking a herd of nine Twinfang Cats. The cats dodged the blows and to the initiative to attack with their trademark agility. The battle was of stamina; the ones who were tired out first would be decimated.

Yulian carefully watched the battle from the top of a nearby tree. With his perfect control over his movement, he had sneaked up to spectate the battle. Even though it was virtual, this type of battle waged out in the wilds was as brutal as reality.
There was no technique, no skill. There was a difference between the physical parameters of the animals, but it didn’t provide actual advantage. The sheer brutality of the battle was awe inspiring.
It almost made Yulian forget that in the end, the battlers were originally domesticated pets.
The turning point occurred when a cat managed to tear its claws through the alpha mastiff. The larger hound moaned as its eyes were pierced through.
Just then, Yulian jumped from the treetop. Like falling lightning, his sword beheaded the alpha, its large head covering the ground with its blood.
Seeing the sudden entrant to the battle, the animals froze for a moment. This moment was enough for Yulian’s blade to turn into a flash of golden bladelight, behead two mastiffs in a blink of an eye. The 7 foot long blade excelled in battling hordes of enemies.
Recovering from surprise, the animals teamed up to attack Yulian. No matter how unrealistic this action was, it was still a VR game. ‘Players’ would suffer attacks from all ‘Monsters’.
Without even flinching, Yulian raised his sword. His muscles seemed to bulk up for a moment, signifying his attacking force had doubled! With his strength boosted, his sword immediately slaughtered the lone dog and five cats.
As four cats sought to escape, Yulians figure flashed near them.
Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop!
The cats met the same fate as the dogs. With his slaughter complete, Yulian shook his sword. All the blood dotting it disappeared.

Yulian checked the blue screen in surprise. In reality, this was the first time that all his traits had complemented each other so perfectly.
Checking his total star points, he found out that he had 1236 star points in total.
“Well, let’s check what I can buy for this much later. Time to log out for now.” With a simple command, countless lights flashed before him as the virtual world blurred away. Once again, Yulian found himself in his bed.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
