“What the hell is wrong with you!?!?!”
Livia walked into her office, locked the door and took a seat at her desk.
“The correct question Mister Hyuni would be, what is wrong with you?”
She started tapping on the glass desk like she was using a keyboard, so I headed for the door and tried to unlock it by placing my hand against it. All I got was two low pitched beeps in quick succession. I’d tried that maybe ten times now, so it was no surprise.
I should’ve ran out the door the moment I saw it opening.
“We’re not done yet Mister Hyuni so take a seat.” She said it while looking at a display that was being projected before her.
I turned to face her, scowling. “You can’t just lock me in here for five hours!”
The digital clock on the wall displayed 3:34 pm, and I’d been locked in here since around 8:40 am.
Livia’s eyes left the screen and locked onto me. “Yes I can. I could also have you nullified and expelled if I deem you as uncooperative. Now stop throwing a tantrum and take a seat.”
She kept her eyes locked onto me, waiting for me to make my move.
Fucking bitch.
I took a deep, heavy breath. It helped me contain the squall of emotions inside of me. I yielded, for now, and took a seat on the couch, throwing my legs up onto the coffee table. She didn’t seem to care and kept typing while looking at the projected display. The screen was laterally inverted from my perspective, and from my distance it was impossible to try discern what was on it.
“What are you doing?” I threw the words at her, not bothering to be polite.
“Checking my instagram.”
My feet immediately dropped from the table with a thud as I got ready to storm over to her desk.
“I was joking Mister Hyuni.” Her voice was coated in a layer of sadistic glee. “I am documenting your progress.”
My short nails dug into my skin as my shaking hand formed a fist. I took more deep, heavy breaths, and said nothing as I placed my feet back onto the table, but not without kicking it to vent my frustration. It didn’t matter if she got angry at my display. I wanted to elicit something from her, with anger being at the top of the list.
Her desk had no front, so I could see her body beneath it. Her legs were crossed one over the other, which wouldn’t have been enough on its own for me to see anything spectacular, but she didn’t sit straight. She sunk into her chair enough that I could see the black lace which lied in between.
My dick twitched and I knew I was getting a boner. Good. She owed me this. If she was going to lock me in this room even longer I at least deserved the right to ogle her as much as I liked. Her body could make up for her being a bitch.
Fuck, she’s hot.
“I would appreciate it if you would stop staring at me Mister Hyuni.”
My eyes didn’t budge.
“Stop calling me that Miss Hopson.”
The muscles in her body went tense for a moment and she sat up straight. The black lace left my vision, but my eyes were no less lascivious. They hunted her body for each and every allure.

“Don't call me Miss Hopson. I’m not a teacher. Do you not know who I am?”
I smirked. “Miss Hopson.”
Her eyebrows lowered and her hands stopped typing. “I’m not a teacher. I’m a researcher from the central district and specialize in magic formulae, not some lowly teacher, okay?”
I didn’t foresee such a reaction, but I did revel in it. Watching her tense up and lose control of her voice, even just a little, tasted utterly delectable.
“So if you want any chance of actually getting somewhere as a magician stop staring at me.” Her eyes returned to the display. “Though I’m not surprised. That’s all you can-”
My nails tore through my flesh as Livia’s body catapulted through the air and slammed into the wall behind her, emptying her lungs in an instant. She lingered there, up on the wall, for a moment, seemingly restrained by an invisible force before she fell to the ground in a crumpled mess, breathing audibly.
Aside from her chair that now laid tipped over in the corner of the room, nothing else had been affected.
After several deep breaths, Livia slowly pushed herself up and held her wrist, examining the skin that had turned a light pink.
“Now isn’t that intriguing…”
Livia eyed me like a hawk about to dive on its prey.
“You, Ryu, are a very interesting specimen, and I intend to find out exactly what makes you tick.”
“I could have you fired for treating me like this.” My voice was hoarse and my throat dry.
Why am I so tired?
My eyelids felt heavy and I consciously fought to keep them from closing.
Livia walked towards me slowly while never taking me out of her sight. She was being cautious.
“Unauthorized use of magic is a criminal offense. Make that an assault charge and, well, you’ll certainly never set foot in any school ever again. Unless, of course, you want to tell me how you did that?” She spoke slowly, making sure I could hear every word, and took a seat opposite me.
“You’re tired, aren’t you?”
I didn’t respond, but my drooping head was enough of an answer.
“You overdrafted, which, quite literally means you spent more mana than you actually have. Not enough to do any permanent damage from the looks of it, but I still don’t get why you’d go so far just to throw me into the wall. Hmm?”
Livia must’ve expected me to answer as she let out a sigh.
“I suppose I’ll have to help you. I can’t have you collapsing on your way home.”
Livia walked over to me and touched the skin on the top of my hand. The spot she touched felt warm for a split second before passing, and with that she broke the connection. My mind felt the effect of whatever she’d done immediately as the fatigue vanished and I could focus once more.
“I’ve only given you enough mana to wake up so don’t even bother trying to attack me again, you’ll most likely go unconscious.” Livea strolled back to her seat. “But you’re lucky, if not for your unusual circumstances I wouldn’t hesitate to incapacitate you.”
As I watched her walk I organized my thoughts.
“I don’t know what happened.”
Livia rested her chin on her palm. “You really don’t know how to use magic do you?”

I wasn’t sure if it was a rhetorical question or not, but I replied anyway. “I’ve been trying to tell you that the whole time.”
She rolled her eyes. “Well I have a theory on what’s wrong with you.”
“There’s nothing wrong with me,” I grumbled.
“So you’d prefer to admit that you consciously attacked me?”
“I didn’t.”
“Mister Hy- Ryu, I understand that you have a certain degree of animosity towards me, and part of that is my own fault, but do you honestly believe me being thrown into the wall is nothing but a coincidence?”
“Maybe it’s cause you’re such a bitch.”
I stared at Livia for a moment and of course she stared back with those brown eyes that let nothing through.
“I guess it’s too much for me to expect you to understand this, but I’ll try. All magicians have a latent self defense mechanism which activates when they are in a state of extreme duress. Yours on the other hand seems to… overreact.”
Livia’s lips sprung into a pursed smile with her cheeks raised ever so slightly, and she continued to stare at me.
“Did you, get it?” She pronounced it in a slow, clear and sophisticated voice.
It pissed me off. Her expression. Her tone. Everything. But she knew more than me, or at least she was confident enough to appear that way. Her words captured me and reeled me in under the belief that she could be right.
Livia’s cheeks raised up, unrestrained, as her smile unlatched. She knew she had me.
“Ryu, I’d like to help you fix that, or, more accurately, help you gain conscious control over your magic.”
I smirked. “I’m not stupid. You obviously don’t want to be a teacher so why do you want to help me so badly?”
Livia’s smile lost some of its lustre but it quickly returned. “It would be a mutually beneficial relationship. I have certain needs Ryu, which I believe you can fulfil.” Livia crossed her legs, and I knew she was being deliberate in her choice of words. “Of course, I will make sure to take care of you in return.”
The sexual connotation to her words made me aware of how volatile my hormones could be. The boner that had only recently left due to my unexpected fatigue was now rising and dirtying my thoughts, and she had every intention to take advantage of it.
“Now you seem to have a lot of trouble controlling your urges. We’ll need to fix that. I suspect that you are allowing your emotions to control you, leading to your, problem. The changes you impose on the world are dependant on your own desires...”
I didn’t pay much attention to her from there, not really in the mood for a lecture. Plus, she was ignoring my question which kinda bugged me. It took Livia ten, maybe fifteen, seconds to notice I wasn’t actually listening but merely looking in her direction.
“Are you done?” I said, mimicking Livia’s clear and sophisticated tone the best I could.
She sighed. “No, but you clearly are not paying any attention so we can continue the topic tomorrow. Before I let you go however… about your living arrangements. Organising a transfer to another room, one where you are alone, would be best. What I have right now is only a theory, but you being around people, much less a bunch of young ladies, is… dangerous.”
I actually do need to move…
Ruri popped into my head. Would she be okay? But if I didn’t leave would she become too dependant on me?
“I can’t move right now.”
“Hmph, of course. You would love it if I allowed you to continue living in the girls dorm… well, whatever. Have your fun. If something happens it is your problem.”
“Nothing’s going to happen.”
Livia got up and unlocked the door, and I followed behind her.
“Come straight to my office tomorrow.”
I left as soon as I could, not bothering to reply.
***
Returning to the apartment was fun, especially when I had another mild case of blue balls from Livia's less than professional teasing.
The dorm itself encompassed a tall nine story building with a foyer entrance. Inside were a couple phones for calling residents, a few couches with tiny round tables scattered around and then the most important of all, a glass door which required touch identification to get past. Behind this barrier were some resident only areas, the main one being the two elevators to get up and down. So when I stepped into the foyer that had a couple female students chatting I got a few looks but but no one said anything.
No, it was when placed my hand against the glass doors and they opened that I could feel the eyes of every person in the room snap to me.
“Why does a guy have access?”
“Is he a staff member?”
“But he’s wearing a uniform…”
I could hear the girls chatting as I waited for the elevator, and I knew it would only be a matter of time until rumors started to circulate.
How the hell did Mum convince the city to transfer me here?
I couldn’t see Ruri when I stepped into my- our apartment, but her shoes were tucked neatly to the side at the entrance, so I knew she was home. Probably in her room.
I went to my room and changed into a shirt and shorts. I’d been hoping that Ruri wouldn’t be home so I could relieve myself without the risk of her walking in, but that was a fail. I took a seat at my desk where my laptop sat and switched it on. It wasn’t the fastest, the smallest, the quietest, or anything really, but it got the job done. Plus, I couldn’t afford anything better.
I started up “Just Another MMORPG”, one of the few remaining non-VR games. Virtual reality is the favorable medium for gaming among other things nowadays, but once again I couldn’t afford it. Maybe I’d try it once I get a job. I needed to distract myself so ran around killing whatever I came across until the thought of fapping left my mind.
When I got bored of slaying noobs I jumped on my bed and looked at the ceiling.
What the hell is she planning?

I promise terrifying mushrooms, angry snakes, confused gods, even more confused cultivators and much, much more! Update schedule: (02/6/2022) As chapters are done, sorry. Progress: Currently up to old chapter 13-15. Chapter 24(or 25)/13, Parts 1 & 2 will be the end of the rework. Part 2 has been temporarily delayed due to me getting a frozen shoulder in the middle of June, which has been very slow to properly clear up. It is getting better, though, but Shoulder/neck is the worst set of muscles to have issues with ;( You can currently pick up most story threads after the rewritten chapters, starting from chapter 13-14 (old) Genre-wise, this is a bit hard to pin down. It's technically a Xianxia (because cultivators!), but it also veers towards Xuanhuan and has more traditional High Fantasy elements and a bit of Gods and Monsters and All Myths Are (on some levels) Valid. It also has a fairly large, ensemble cast, so if multiple point's of view are not your thing I am sorry. It won't ever really be considered 'grimdark' by any real measure of that definition but it does go to some complicated and fairly places dark occasionally, which I will note in author pre-chapter notes when expedient!. About the Author I mainly write fiction for my own hobby, it makes a nice change from academic scribbling! I started writing this quite a number of years ago. It has grown somewhat organically out of a bunch of different interests in all kinds of Mythology, World Building, Drawing Maps, Archaeology, Anthropology, History and Epic Fantasy fiction into what it is today. So I hope you enjoy the story and thanks for reading! Other stuff The cover is made by the author, using photos taken by the author. There is a Discord Server- Please come and chat, but beware of spoilers.

Patchwork System
Notification (cannot be ignored): For being the first being to kill another of its own species after Sublimation, Lyam Aldren is awarded the Title of Cain’s Successor. Let all fear the Kinslayer!!! Lyam Aldren, killer for hire, was just going about his business when he suddenly received a notification from something called the System. Apparently, the entirety of Earth, its denizens and its matter were transported into the world of the System, planted in 'patches' all throughout the infinite world. The world of the Patchwork System is one of challenges, where life is cheap, power is king, and Classes and levels are a thing. In a brutal world, there is perhaps room for a killer with bloodstained hands to find his own way, free of his past. However, his Title and his inherent nature plague him, his fragmented personality laid bare to those with the eyes to see, and if he doesn't become powerful enough to defeat or escape those who would use or destroy him, he will quickly be devoured by the merciless world created by the System. Compared to my previous work, this is a more 'classic' litrpg setup, with clear (if somewhat complex) progression through levels and skill gains, with a 'system apocalypse' setup. Unlike most system apocalypse story protagonists, Lyam is neither a leader nor is he particularly interested in saving his fellow Earthlings. This is a story of a man who is both endangered and set free by the destruction of his old world, as he finds both power, new discoveries, and adventure in a place where his past matters not at all and power is the only language most speak. Later in the story, there will be harem elements, but the first volume is dedicated to Lyam's first months in the System. For those who are more interested in the Heirs of the Hooded King, I am putting it on hiatus as I rework the setting and future story developments a bit.
