《Blood of an Inhuman Hitman (Rewrite)》Chapter 3 - Physical Tests at the Training Ground

When Jack and the others got to the ground floor they exited the elevator, they were in a mall. Zoe motioned for Jack to go towards one of the toilets and when he asked her why she replied with.
"Because there are some clothes in there for you. Go in the 'Out of order' toilet cubicle."
Jack hoped the clothes weren't just on the floor and they were in a briefcase as he replied to Zoe with sarcasm, "Oh, how hygienic. I'm already so thrilled to be working with you."
Zoe and the twins both laughed but did nothing to refute him. Slightly worried, Jack just walked towards the toilet Zoe pointed out to him and entered them. He got a lot of weird looks from people around him because he was wearing a hospital gown and also probably because he was 6"6 and incredibly muscular. He ignored them and entered the cubicle with the 'Out of Order' sign on it.
Inside he found a briefcase, causing him to sigh in relief, and he opened it.
The insides of the briefcase were revealed to him and he saw a pair of black combat trousers, a black tank top, black combat boots, and some black socks and underwear.
'Wow, they're really going for the training camp kinda vibe. What's with all the black though? Are they going for some kind of Matrix vibe as well?'
Shaking his head, Jack took of the hospital gown and looked at how many bandages they had put on him. Suddenly an idea came to him. Back when he was in the 'hospital' room, before being held down by those two oni twins, Jack felt something weird in his hands and he figured he might as well try and see if they were what he was thinking of.
He focused on his index finger on his right hand and suddenly the nail on that finger morphed into a claw that looked incredibly sharp.
'These will probably come in handy at some point in the future. Hell, it's already being pretty useful right now.'
As he thought this, Jack carefully brought his claw to where the bandages started on his neck before swiftly and precisely bringing his finger down to his stomach in one smooth motion, cutting through the majority of the bandages. Then he just ripped off the of the bandages, pleased with his work. Soon after this, he put on the underwear and socks, then the combat trousers and then the boots, before finally putting on the black tank top, which looked more like a sleeveless men's sports top rather than the usual baggy tank top.
After this, Jack walked out of the cubicle and saw himself in the mirror, he'd be lying if he said he didn't think he looked amazing. Not because of the clothes but because of his body. He just couldn't stress enough on how intimidating he looked. This was reaffirmed when people back away from him when he came out of the cubicle. Jack wasted no time and walked out of the toilet and back to where Zoe and the twins were.
When he returned back the twins started looking at him again, so he asked, well whispered to Zoe about it.
"Psst, Zoe, why do those twins keep staring at me?"
Zoe stifled a laugh, quite badly in fact as the twins looked over at the two of them, but she soon calmed down and answered his question.
"They're Oni's, it's in their instincts to find someone who can physically beat them and hell, you do look like you could physically beat them. They'll probably challenge you to a fight after you've finished your training."

It suddenly made sense, he'd probably already proven that he was physically stronger when they were trying to restrain him. Even if it was only a little bit stronger and they didn't want to hur--kill him when they were restraining him. Thinking back about how they kept dislocating his shoulders when they had restrained he was a little annoyed and also quite excited for their fights in the future when he can do the same.
But he soon snapped out of his mental monologue and asked Zoe a question, "What kind of training am I doing then, Zoe?"
"Good question. We'll start you off on some physical training to get you used to your new body and to make you stronger while we're at it. After that, you're on combat and weapons training. Then, you'll be on your mental strength and fortitude training."
"I have to do physical training? I'm plenty strong already."
"Not as strong as someone of your lineage should be, Jack. Granted that you haven't gone through the Maturing period, going through physical training should help maximize the benefits gained from your upcoming Maturity period. You need to work hard, unlike those two lazy demons," she said this as she pointed at the twins who seemed like they'd just gotten told off by their mom.
"That's not fair, Young Miss, It's just training gets boring...but now we have the motivation and a goal to work toward!" When he heard the scarred twin say that, Jack felt a shiver go up his spine.
'Please God don't let me be the cause of that motivation, please, just let me have some peace!'
After mentally whining for a while he realized that he didn't know the twin's names, so he decided to ask.
"Sorry for waiting so long to ask, kinda been a long day, you know?" he smiled apologetically at the twin, "But if you don't mind me asking, what are your names?"
Jack's smile had killing power that he was quite oblivious to and this seemed to fry the brains of both the twins and nothing came in the form of an answer until the younger twin snapped out of it and introduced herself and her sister.
"H-hello Jack, wait can I call you Jack?... Ahem anyway, erm I'm Yuka and this is my older sister Aya!"
The younger one, Yuka, introduced herself in an incredibly nervous state but she got the important stuff out and she also introduced the older twin, Aya, the one who had the scar.
"Of course you can both call me Jack, I don't mind. It's a pleasure to know you two, we'll have to have a fight after my training. Don't think I've forgotten about my shoulders being dislocated."
Jack continued to smile as he talked to them both, he even flashed a provocative smile towards them at the end when he said they should fight.
Obviously, as they're Oni's they took his request for a fight and his provocative smile as something completely else than what he was planning and Zoe had to put her hand over her mouth and look away as she was laughing so much. Jack didn't realize what he'd just done as he was too busy thinking about what he was gonna do when he got to the training camp and about how he's gonna meet his Mom and little sister for the first time in about 3 years.
Soon he and the others were in a car that drove off towards what Jack assumed is the direction of the training grounds. He was right, after about 45 minutes of driving and sitting in the car, where he mainly talked to the twins, they arrived at what looked like a military compound.

The vehicle just drove through the checkpoints and dropped the 4 people off next to a building that had the words 'TESTING CENTER'. Zoe and the twins just walked in and Jack soon followed when he found them staring at him, they walked to some stairs that seemed to lead down under the building. Once they'd reached the bottom, Zoe talked to a few people and told Jack to follow her into a room that looked like a massive indoor gym.
Zoe led Jack over to what looked like a benchpress machine with some pretty big weights next to it.
Zoe spoke up, "Come and lie down on this benchpress machine and we'll test you and I'll explain the way of power in this agency."
Jack complied and went up to the bench and lay down on it while Zoe explained the 'power system' to him.
"Okay, so every race has different strength limits, so we don't lump everyone in together. Everyone has different strengths," she pointed toward the twins who'd just entered, "Onis have more muscular endurance and strength compared to most races...say for example an Elf would be weaker than an Oni unless it's Racial Rank was much higher than the Oni. But the Elf would absolutely destroy the Oni in a competition based on Speed or Grace/Control. Do you get what I'm trying to say?"
Jack nodded his head, "Yeah, you're saying that people in the agency base their strength off of their Racial Rankings. You're also saying that each Race has inborn strengths and weaknesses, right?"
Seeing that he understood what she was getting at, Zoe started to explain what they were gonna do.
"So what we're gonna do now is use these special weights that weigh 100kg each and see how strong you are, okay?"
Jack nodded again and waited for the twins to lift the weights up onto the bar. Jack decided to ask Zoe a question while he waited.
"So Zoe, is physical prowess the only way of power around here? No special abilities?"
"Well, of course, it's not the only way of power, it just depends on what creature you are, decides the power system you'll be using. Human's, Elves, some different lineage's in the Vampire race and some other smaller species use abilities, things innate in their races, to get more powerful. While lineages from Vampires, like the one you're from, Oni's, Werewolves and stuff like Orc's use their body's to get stronger by tempering their body's too insane heights."
"So I can't have an ability? That sucks a little bit..."
"Well, you might have an ability, just depends if you're a variant Vampire in one of your strains," she thought about the possibility before laughing, "If you are, well, you'll be an even bigger monster than you already are...Anyway, let's get to testing your limits!"
Jack nodded his agreement and put his right hand on the bar and pressed up expecting resistance, but he got none. It was like picking up a twig. He looked in Zoe's direction and showed her that he was fine, so Jack put the bar down and they put 200kg more on the bar.
Jack was quite curious to what the bar was made out of but soon just washed those thoughts away as he pushed the bar up with one hand, it was definitely heavier but not heavy enough to force him to use 2 hands. They added more on once again pushing the overall weight up to 600kg, this time it was a slight struggle to get it in the air with only one arm but he did it. Once it hit 800kg however, he decided to use both his hands to push it up, he even did a few reps to show that he was still fine to go.
All in all, he could bench press up to 2000kg using his absolute maximum strength and also using some kind of mysterious energy in his blood which he decided he'd ask Zoe about when he could.
Before they moved onto the next test, however, Zoe wanted to inform Jack on something, "So, you remember when I mentioned Racial Ranks earlier, right?" Jack nodded, "Okay, let me explain them a little."
She sat on a nearby bench before she carried on speaking, "Every supernatural creature is in a constant state of Evolution. We fight, we kill and we survive and grow strong, that's the modus operandi of us monsters. But we all have limits, you'll hit yours after you finish your maturation period in a few months and what do you think you do after that? Hmm?" Zoe looked at Jack for his answer.
Jack just looked at her for a minute before thinking about the issue. He thought long and hard about it before coming up with a semblance of an answer, "I'll break through the limit and reach a new Racial Rank?"
Zoe nodded, "Yes, you're currently in E-Rank. An average Vampire within your mixed lineage but when you break through that limit, you'll become a D-Rank and your abilities and racial traits will undergo an evolution. After that, you'll be classed as a D-Rank Monster, or in your case a Vampire Soldier. Any questions?"
"Yeah, how do I actually push through the limit and break through?" Jack knew he had to break through, just not how, so he decided to ask her now in the off-chance that he wouldn't be able to ask her when the time came.
"By using a special capsule back at the agency," seeing Jack's curious face, Zoe quickly shot him down, "Don't think about it, I'll show you it on a different day."
After this discussion, they carried on with the physical exam after clarifying that Jack didn't have any more questions and understood all the information he'd already received.
Anyway, they went to the next test which was the 100m Sprint.
Jack got on the starting line with Yuka standing next to him with the starting gun, while Aya and Zoe stood at the end of the track with stopwatches.
*Bang!*
Soon after the gun was shot, Jack burst forth with enough power to send a myriad of cracks from where he pushed off. He flashed down the track and in no time he got to the end of the track and heard Zoe speak.
"The only thing all the vampire lineages have in common is their speed and you, with the Vaebeast lineage, have the physical strength to back it up, simply incredible," Zoe shook her head in awe as she looked at the stopwatch, "Anyway, you did that in about 2 seconds, meaning you were going about 45m/s which is about 100mph and you've only just been turned, you ancient Vampires are incredibly rare but when one of you does show up, you're all freakishly strong..." she seemed to be despairing about Jack's potential but she had a smile on her face, so he knew she was just joking with him.
"Wow, I just ran at 100mph? This new body is insane," he widened his eyes in disbelief. He'd always thought Olympic sprinters were quick but hadn't he just ran 4 times quicker than one?
They then went on to do other tests to decide what his training program should be when he looked at it, Jack winced a little bit, the excitement from going from a normal human to a Vampire dying down a little bit.
After the tests, Zoe showed Jack to his room and spoke to him.
"Just rest for the next few days and I'll organize a meet up with you and your family. But you can't tell them anything about the supernatural, do you understand? Just say you're joining the military."
Jack nodded and entered his room where he collapsed onto his bed because of how exhausted he was from all the tests but then he remembered he forgot to ask Zoe about that mysterious energy.
'You idiot, Jack! Welp looks like I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow to ask her...'
Soon after he thought this, he looked at the clock in his room and it was getting late, so he took off his clothes and got into bed and slept until the next morning when he woke up to some guy around 5"9 and with wings looking at him.
"Oi! Let's get training!"
.
.
.
"Eh?" was all Jack managed to get out.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
