《Aegis》Chapter 53: Seven Kinds of Sideways

Getting the Terra Incarnadine back to Dagda proves to be a non-trivial challenge. First is the nearly month-long stretch of maintenance, sealing in the auxiliary bridge, adding temporary struts and gellar field generators that should hopefully allow her to survive a warp transit. Next is the transit itself, a slow and twitchy affair, punctuated by the creaking of the hull and whispers in the dark. Last is the revision to realspace; a slow affair permeated by the coppery smell of ozone.
Now in geosynchronous orbit over Dagda once more, You assign Jace to the Terra Incarnadine, with instructions to complete her as he deems fit. the resulting grin on his face is slightly horrific, but you figure the project should pay for itself, given the system's asteroid belts. Crewing the ship is another matter. Where the Aegis needs a crew of twenty-six thousand, the Terra Incarnadine is going to need closer to three hundred thousand.
But that is a problem for another time. The Leaf has returned from her latest run to Outbound, bearing reports of trouble brewing. They are out of date by now, nearly two weeks old, but indicate strife brewing between the colonists and the Tau outpost in the system. Given that Mu'randa indicated that the Tau had arranged for the colonization effort, something is definitely fishy.
You order the Leaf to stand down for a refit cycle while you investigate. Bringing Mu'randa along is something of a calculated risk. She knows more about tau culture and diplomacy than anyone else, but her former employers / overlords might not take kindly to her defection. You shrug and decide to bring her anyway, she is a part of your crew after all.
The Aegis had made much better time to Dagda while you were waiting for the Terra Incarnadine to be Warp-ready, and is ready to leave as soon as you are. Instead, you order another week of rest and relaxation for the crew, thought he real purpose of the order is for Yasha to rest up properly. With some... personal... attention from yourself of course.

Finally, everything is ready to go. You depart the Dagda system with little fanfare, passing the now familiar unfinished bulk of the Terra Incarnadine.
The Warp transit to Outbound is smooth, though you are plagued by whispers. Half-words and sibilant hisses emanating for dark corners, laughter from empty rooms. when you check with Yasha, she reports some of the same things.
On arriving in the Outbound system, you are greeted by a sight that is both familiar and depressing to see: a war-torn world. The main colony sight is riven in two, a blackened strip of no-man's-land separating what you presume to be warring factions. The Tau enclave in orbit is starting to grow the familiar bulk of weapon emplacements, presumably to defend itself or protect Tau interests on the planet below. The Warp Shrine location is still a crater, though you are sure that someone has been poking around the area, if the small clutch of tents is anything to go by.
Mu'randa has been fielding communication attempts nonstop since the Aegis' arrival. As the Aegis settles into a vector designed to slowly overtake Vrenna, she hands you a summary.
Leafing through, you quickly grasp the gist of the situation: the Pilgrims are objecting to the presence of the Tau, where as the former crew of the Cambrian is defending it. The Tau are standing well clear of the civil war, but are looking into the disappearance of an investigation team from near the Warp Shrine.
This of course leaves you with something of a conundrum; who to help first, and how. The Tau are leery of routing trade through the system with the civil war going on, though they may be persuaded to continue the route direct from Nil'kvee, so that bit can keep for the moment.

Chronicles of Xod (returning from hiatus)
After a long recovery over a chronic motion sickness issue, I feel I'm ready to return to writing this book. It might be slow at first, but I'm hoping to pick up where I left off. I apologize again for the long hiatus. The pages following are a true account. An account of how I, Josh--a teenage nerd from modern suburbia--ended up in a strange world filled with fantastic magic, bizarre creatures, and terrifying dungeons. Despite the troped-up fantasy feel of the world, this is hardly an ordinary tale. For one, don’t expect a happy ending. With the trials I’ve been through, the horrors I’ve seen and the atrocities I’ve committed, believe me when I tell you, this is not a happy tale filled with friendly rainbow bears or teenage flying unicorns. It’s more likely you’ll finish this book mentally scarred as I will not spare the details of my unfortunate adventures. With the help of my trusted companion Gui, I gain an insight that no one else in the world has. This knowledge allows me to exploit and, for lack of a better term, metagame the system which gave me a clear advantage over its residents. “With great power...,” someone might begin to quote to me. In my defense, I think maybe even you, reader, might have acted similarly with how this reality changed my view of good and evil. This story will be updated regularly on Wednesdays around 6 PM. There will only be about 1000 words per update. The focus is to finish the story before doing any major changes or editing. Please read as if this is a work in progress, not a finished product. Feel free to let me know if you see any error, whether glaring or minor. If you help me out, I'll be sure to add you to a thank you list at the front of the book when it is published. Chronicles of Xod is a first-person fantasy novel that follows the adventures of a young man from Earth. Through unknown circumstances, he finds himself in a fantasy world where life is not all wonders and happy endings. The story takes common fantasy concepts from my favorite video games, books and movies and gives them an adult edge. It also introduces some taboo concepts often glossed over by stories written for broad audiences. The style is meant to be immersive and heavily detailed. The short novel will be written in a way that attempts to bring a sense of realism to an unrealistic genre. Where there are realistic consequences and dangers in a world populated with violent monsters, cruel demons, bloodthirsty undead, and immoral bandits. In this fantasy world, the inhabitants are essentially gender blind as far as sexuality is concerned. There is also more variation amongst male and female physiology. This isn't meant to be any kind of promotion or demotion of social behavior in reality. Just a concept I thought would be an interesting idea to have in a fantasy setting. I highly discourage anyone from reading this material if you are personally concerned with being offended or traumatized. Both violent and sexual content will be graphically detailed. All characters involved in sexual scenes are mature and of the age of consent(18+).

Skeleton Sovereign?
A lawyer, along with ten thousand other people, is kidnapped by the Heavenly Demon of Decay to participate in a campaign against the Monarch of Everglades. The Heavenly Demon of Decay, has chosen these ten thousand people to be the captains of his 100 man squads, saying that beings of lower realms are easier to boost temporarily. Our lawyer didn’t complain much at that. A generic hero summoned to another world setting, he thought. And as he didn’t have any family or much attachment to his previous world, he even liked his situation. But that was until he found out, that the “Heavenly Demon of Decay” was a necromancer. And that he along with millions of other humans, and various beings, were processed into undead soldiers. ‘Well fuck!’, he thought. And after being equipped with high quality equipment, and being robbed of his free will, he marched, along with billions of other horrifying undead, against the Monarch of the Everglades. But his poor luck didn’t end there. The Heavenly Demon of Decay, and his army lost. But the worst part was, they left him behind while retreating. Now, he is stuck behind in a huge jungle, full of various monsters, where every moment he must struggle for his life. But isn’t he already dead? This thought only serves to incense him further. But that is not all to his story, he finds that he is in a different, more powerful world, where wizards, warriors, dragons, dungeons but most importantly “CULTIVATION” exists. Albeit not very Chinese, but cultivation nonetheless. But, can a skeleton even cultivate? Not a native english speaker. So don't expect impeccable grammar. Although I do try my best, this is also my first novel so pointers are appreciated. Haters, just stop reading if you don't like it. Please don't spoil my mood by evil comments.
