《Aegis》Chapter 67: Old Blood, Older Poisons

You wish Jace good luck in getting such information out of Inquisitor Olaf, and head back to check on Ariavari. On the way there, you decide to check in on Yasha. You find her door closed but not locked, and you hear her weeping from inside her bedroom.
Concerned you knock on her bedroom door to announce your presence. Yasha answers the door, tears still pouring down her face, and throws herself into your arms.
"Yasha, what happened, whats wrong?"
"E-everything is w-wrong, Tristan."
"Everything sounds a bit large. Come, have a seat. I'll make some tea if you can tell me were the kettle is, and we'll talk."
Yasha slowly lets go of you and drifts over to sink into an overstuffed armchair. "Chamomile, please. Kettle is on the counter, tea bags in the second drawer from the left. You know where the milk and honey is."
You set the kettle on to boil, pour two glasses of water, and return to Yasha. "Here, start with this. You talk, I'll listen, and we'll go from there."
Yasha drinks deeply from her glass and scrubs at her eyes. "How much do you know of N-navigators?"
You take a slow sip from your own glass. "That you guide ships through the Warp. That you need that third eye in your forehead to see clearly in that immaterial realm. And that doing so carries a terrible price for the Navigator over his or her career in the form of mutation, madness, and the risk of possession by Daemons."
Yasha takes another drink. "All t-true, and widely known to those who fly the stars. Lesser known, for we Navigators don't talk of it, is the requirement to b-breed the n-next generation of..." She trails off in tears.

You take her water glass from her hands and hug her for a long time, letting her cry on your shoulder. "Just breathe Yasha. Long, slow breaths. I'm not going anywhere." fweeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEE "Except to pour the tea. Breathe Yasha, I'll be in the kitchen."
Yasha chokes back a sob as you peel yourself off of her. You head to the kitchen and begin the ritual that is making tea. "Strong, with milk and honey, right?" You glance back through the open doorway. Yasha nods, still unable to speak. You put three teabags into a large cup, pour in the water, and cover to let it steep. You place it on the counter and set a small timer for ten minutes before returning to sit with Yasha.
Yasha tries to speak again. "V-vir and I, w-we're the l-last of H-house Saurlance. Ever since my m-mother died salvaging the A-aegis, w-we have b-been the l-last. A-and now House Saurlance is dead. V-vir isn't a N-navigator anymore, and I can't b-bear any m-more. Not since V-vrenna..." Her voice fails.
You let out a long sigh. "I think I begin to see. Let me bring you your tea, and it will be my turn to talk, and yours to listen, ok?" Yasha nods and drains her water glass. You head for the kitchen, stopping the timer just before it rings. You uncover the cup, discard the tea bags, fill the cup the rest of the way with milk, and stir in two spoons of honey.
You bring it to Yasha. "Here, drink this. Before you give in to despair, let's work some things through. House Saurlance needs a new generation of Navigators, and you can't bear any after what Kamas did. Vir can still sire heirs to the house, but Matron Saurlance will have to negotiate for them in all likelihood, now that Vir is out from under her thumb. So House Saurlance doesn't die with you at all."

Yasha sips slowly at her tea. "I-I can't let the Matron know about m-my condition. She'll throw me out of the House."
You snort. "In which case Vir and Morrigan probably won't negotiate at all, and she will have damned House Saurlance herself. Vir will leave House Saurlance, and from a new Navigator House with the backing of House Von Sebastion."
Yasha's eyes are huge, "you can do that?"
You nod, "House Von Sebastion can. Our charter goes all the way back to the first wave of Rogue Traders from Terra in the opening days of the Great Crusade."
Yasha sips her tea and wipes her eyes again. "And what about me? A cast-out ex-Navigator? No one would keep me."
You reach over and hug her. "Have you forgotten about your skill? You are the only navigator I know of to have piloted two crippled ships back to port and have sworn an oath to the Terra Incarnadine, a ship probably older than the Imperium itself. Have you forgotten about us? I consider all of the people under my employ, especially you, to be family. I take care of my family, come hell or high water. I would keep you, damn whatever Matron Saurlance says or does."
Yasha shudders and your hair stands on end as a pulse of something courses through the ship.
"Was that...?"
Yasha nods into your shoulder, "p-psychic pulse. Something is h-happening."
"Alright, we'll resume this talk anytime you need to Yasha. My door is always open to you. But for now, something is going wrong. Will you help me in righting it, Navigator mine?"
Yasha draws in a deep breath. "Yes, Shipmaster mine. That pulse didn't seem human, though I have felt its like once before; when I awoke from my coma."
You nod, "then it's probably Ariavari." At her confused look, you explain, "an Eldar with an interest in opposing Kamas. She healed you that we might get back to Dagda and the Terra Incarnadine sooner. Now she is aboard, searching for the same things that Kamas wants. We should find her, Lord Pyrus would definitely have felt that."
Not bothering with anything more than grabbing weapons, you and Yasha both head for your quarters. As you burst in, you find Anai and Ariavari standing face-to-face, with the afterglow of fading runes circling them both.
Anai's flesh seems to flow and shift, taking on a much more lifelike appearance. Her jaw works, speaking in some language you don't understand.
Ariavari nods, and hugs her in a furious embrace, speaking back in that same language.
You clear your throat. "I hate to break up the reunion ladies, but we may have trouble. Flamebearer is aboard, and he will have felt that. So someone is headed this way, and I get the feeling that they won't be happy to see you."
Anai cocks her head in clear confusion, her bronze face far too mobile for a simple servitor. Araivari holds up her hand to forestall her questions. "I see. My apologies for doing this, then." She waives her hand, and you and Yasha both crumple to the ground as your vision goes black.
