For as long as I can remember I have lived in between a general store and a bakery.
I lived there, eat there, slept there, and I thought I would die there.
I used to live in a cramped little alleyway that was blocked of by three buildings in the back and to the sides. I never did learn what that third building was, but the moans and screams that came out of it at night told me all I needed to know about it.
I have never known my parents, but I know that at least one of them must have been human. I know that because I’m apparently a Dhampir.
That’s why it’s ok if I live like I do.

No my betters, I HAVE to remember to call them my betters. They get mad if I don’t call them that, if they’re mad they may hurt me again.

That’s why it’s ok that my betters treat me like they do. I know that because the nice baker woman, who helps to teach me things sometimes, told me so. She is really nice, she always gives me the bread with mold o it at the end of the day.
She says that since my betters don’t NEED to eat food other than for enjoyment, she could just give me those instead of paying a fee for a compost removal service. Whatever that is it is really good, I don’t know what I would do if she didn’t give me bread, it’s all I get to eat some months.
As I sat in the back of my ally, curled up in the nest-bed I made myself. I made it of things I found in the street and the things my betters throw away all the time.
I really did make this well, it keeps me warm in the cold, and cool in the heat. I bet I’m the only Dhampir with a nest-bed this good!
I have been living here for 4 or 5 10’s of cold times now, but that’s ok. The baker woman says that since I’m a dirty half-breed I age and mature faster than my betters. But she also said I won’t die either! I just wonder why she seemed kinda upset about that, from what she told me about death and what the scary betters that roam around the alleys sometimes do death seems scary.
Oh that better looks really pretty! I wonder if all betters can look that pretty if they just try?
I must have made a noise because the little better looked at me. The woman better that was with the little better looked at me too.
Oh no….. I hope that they just move on and aren’t the types of betters that like to hurt me……… although maybe if it will make the little one happy, maybe even happy enough to make smile like that at me, it might be worth it…….

The woman better spoke to the little better, now that I looked she was pretty too. But she still wasn’t anywhere near as pretty as the little better…
