Chapter 14: Risk and Reward
As soon as we answered the question a chest suddenly appeared through the floor inside the center of the room. It gave off a warm glow that seemed to spread to every corner of the room, not like the previous rooms with torches that gave a dungeony feel but rather more of a welcoming feel.
As we walked closer to the treasure chest, Emi was still fairly cautious,
“Do you think it’s a trap? Perhaps a final trap to finish off those who get through all the other rooms?”
“Probably not, I doubt that they go through all this trouble to just kill the adventurers at the end.”
I still approached cautiously heeding Emi’s warning and as we got closer we saw letter floating in the middle of the air on top of the chest.
CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THE FIRST TO COMPLETE THE CAVE OF DARK AND LIGHT
It then switched suddenly to another message
OPEN CHEST TO RECEIVE ITEMS AND REWARDS
And then it repeated itself
CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THE FIRST TO COMPLETE THE CAVE OF DARK AND LIGHT
Heeding the instructions I decided to open the chest with Emi. The message on top of the chest suddenly changed again
TWO PEOPLE DETECTED: REWARDS CHANGED TO REWARD TWO PEOPLE
The contents of the box suddenly changed and what appeared was instead two pairs of swords, One pair were named on the hilt “Light” and “Dark” respectively and on the other was “Fire” and “Ice”.
Emi chose the one’s named Fire and Ice as she preferred the brighter colors of Fire Red and Ice Blue while I picked the simpler designed and named Light and Dark.
As soon as we picked up the swords the text above the chest changed once again

ADDITIONAL REWARDS GIVEN: +50 IN EVERY STAT AND ROLL FOR NEW ADDITIONAL SPECIAL TALENT. ACCEPT?
“What do you think Emi?”
“I reckon we should take it the +50 in every stat is a massive boost.”
“Yeah and having a new special talent can’t be bad either. Hopefully it’s something that we can use. Alright then ACCEPT.”
“ACCEPT.”
As soon as Emi and I accepted a sudden rush of warm went through us. It tingled as it reached every spot in our body. My body seemed lighter and more energetic. It was an interesting feeling to say the least.
I suddenly noticed that something as glowing in my pocket. I picked it out and it was the Magic Tag that my mother had given me!
I gasped, “Magic!”
I immediately checked my status tag and Emi followed suit,

I noticed my Special Talents had increased to two with this new “Innate Magic” Special Talent.
Emi noticed her new Special Talent, “Clover we got Magic! Wow that’s so fortunate!”
“I wonder what this means for us? These new swords, increased stats, new special talents. I wonder why this has happened?” Perhaps it had something to do with my luck? Perhaps my destiny was finally changing for the better?
“Anyway Clover we should probably try and find a way out of here.”
As we looked around I spotted the door that led to the outside. To the side of the door there was a sign that read
Select Destination:
• Franziland
• Paolona
• Trinia
• Other
Since we had originally decided to go to Paolona to participate in the tournament we decided to go there and continue with our original arrangement.

As we opened the door we saw it leading to a deserted alleyway with no visible people there. We walked through the door and when we turned back the door had disappeared.
Emi’s and my stomach suddenly grumbled from the amount of energy used in the ordeal so we decided to first pay a visit to the Horse Stable that we had rented from an apologize and then have dinner.
It soon became apparent that the Horse Stable Owner was less than pleased and asked for a cash remuneration. We offered a set of the swords but impatiently waved that away and said
“Cash. Cash is king.”
“How much?” I asked.
“800 Gold Coins, those were good horses.”
“EIGHT HUNDRED GOLD COINS.” That was almost all our money that I had budgeted for.
“Yes pay up now.” Guards had started walking over to see the fuss and so I decided to pay it up to cause less trouble.
“Is it possible that our parents can for it in Trinia?”
“Are you crazy? The roads completely blocked up because of the storm, it will take weeks for that all to be cleared. Am I going to get my money or will I have to ask those guards over there to “convince” you to give my money. Either way I will get my money.”
My face when I came back prompted Emi to ask what happened.
“We’ve got almost no money left those horses cost a lot of money and we had to pay a penalty for losing them.”
“What are we going to do?”
“I really don’t know. But anyway we should go to a place to sit down, eat and then recuperate and think of a plan.”
Luckily the food seemed fairly cheap in Paolona so we found a seat in the “Hungry Boar” which seemed to be affiliated with the tavern in our town.
Emi had some steak and potatoes while I chose the stew to try and save a bit of money. Both dishes were delicious and as we were enjoying our meal I heard some commotion going on in the distance. It seemed that a few burly men were harassing this diminutive blue haired woman. She seemed so striking blue hair that caught the attention of everyone and porcelain doll like face that spoke of beauty but also like a doll she seemed rather emotionless. Her body on the other hand smoke more of a Barbie-like shape and proportion with a killer hourglass figure that would force 10/10 men and woman to ogle at her.
Emi also spotted the trouble as I was lost in my own world and had suddenly run up to them to see what the trouble was.
Oh shit.
Authors Note: Lucky Clover’s effect will now be in brackets as its easier to remember numbers that way.

Mother of Learning
Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill. ********************************** If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link. I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal. The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad. ********************************** The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Blightbane
Miscellaneous Notes: - I want to see about making a crude map of Shroud to help readers. - I also want to get back to writing Coalescence updates. Schedule Notes: - None for now, updates when I can. [ Thank you for your patience and support as I improve my writing and storytelling abilities. I'm also using this story to better develop lore that extends far beyond it. ] Thanks to another exceptionally talented artist, Hiroeth, Blightbane now has an official cover! Vera was alone again. “You’re completely unprepared. Never before has sending one of you off made me feel quite so guilty.” Whenever she found herself in doubt, she would weigh her actions against the guiding principles of the one whom she revered. “When you don’t know the rules of the game, start making them up. When you are constrained by unfavorable conditions, inject a little chaos.” It was the supplementary message that concerned Vera the most. It was difficult to follow because it was intentionally vague and mired in subjectivity. “How can I enjoy myself when you look so tormented? Are we in danger?” Vera fell silent. An experiment is taking place on a planetary scale. Across the surface of the planet, a phenomenon referred to as "Blight" is spreading. Festering regions defended by fierce creatures called “blightbeasts” taint the surface, warping the land and proliferating unceasingly. Among the sentient creatures of the planet, it is the Blightbane Guild’s responsibility to stem the tide. They endeavor to cleanse the land in a struggle of attrition, but they are losing ground. A young man named Caim has been uprooted from his former life and transported to The Shrouded Theocracy, an isolationist nation with fanatical policies. He must struggle to survive with only an unfamiliar strain of magic to aid him. There is a secret to this magic. One he knows very little about. He intends to explore just what makes this magic special. On the far border of the theocracy, a mage scientist named Inis discovers a revolutionary new way to infuse strength from defeated blightbeasts. Using herself as a test subject, this process allows her to grasp magical concepts previously thought beyond her reach. Though she tries to document any side effects that arise, something escapes her awareness. She is playing with a dangerous force that will claim her most treasured asset if she isn't careful. Everyone and everything on the planet is a part of the experiment. The experiment is a lie.

Lesser Evil
In a perfect world, an alcoholic, hedonistic, mentally abusive individual like Audry Forge would never coincide with his attempts to stop the extinction of life. But there is no perfect world. There is no other person. Only the lesser of evils. Participant of the Royal Road Writathon challenge - 55k words Author's Note: This is story has been the easiest to write in my time of writing. I thoroughly enjoy it! You may not understand the premise in the first few chapters but need not worry buddy, I've been working ahead. Things will start rolling! I hope you enjoy it. Give me feedback and make sure to share it around! Other Info: Normally I wouldn't put any warnings but this story will be going down a pretty dark path (based on irl experiences) fairly early on. There will not be any overtly sexual content this early but some themes are suggestive. There is profanity. There are references to drugs and alcohol. There are dramatic relationships that I'm trying to base off of real life. There is more of a focus on characters. There will be unpleasant scenes in regards to death, while others will be brushed over. There will also be a fair amount of pop culture references too! Give it a try. You might like my form of storytelling!

Twoen
The struggle for an interesting game has been the story of my life for quite some time. Every game I find is either too easy, not interesting or too short. Luckily, my two brothers who match my level of skill, albeit in different areas, tend to spice things up. When I look at my older brother I have no idea how he gets anything done when he's such an idiot. Still it doesn't detract from my respect for him as a gamer, though maybe a little. When I look at my younger brother I marvel at the monster that my older brother and I created. Deadliness, craftiness and quiet, both in what he does and how he is. When it's just us three we tend to destory everything in our path. So normally we tend to compete rather than team. Although that isn't to say we're just good as individuals. When we work together our effectiveness multiplies rather than lowering. Well enough about us dorks. Anyway a new VR game came out, apparently in development for quite some time. Of course my older brother decided to drive out and buy three copies. What would this one be missing? Difficulty? Depth? Length? In any case I plan to reach the top before my brothers do. It was a competition after all. Twoen had all three things I normally yearn for in spades. Something I did not foresee. A keeper
