《Idmon the Skeleton》Chapter 5: Market

Chapter 5: Market Hmm... Hmm... Hmm... ARGH!!!!!! HOW WOULD I BUY THINGS! I don’t even know how money works! I had five pouches of gold coins. I can’t ask how much the items are, and there are no signboards or whatsoever. I got 3 of them from the dead thugs. There wasn't a lot of people in the market area. It must be because most of them are in the town square celebrating. Adventurers and a few odd villagers are the only ones here. One pouch of gold would suffice for buying spears and shields. I think... I threw the one pouch of gold to the merchant and took enough spears and shields for my group outside the village. I also took a cart from the stall to carry the goods. The merchant was visibly shocked and bowed. "Thank you for your business!" Clearly, this is a sign that the deal was in his favor. As he kept bowing there, I hurriedly move on to the next stall to buy simple armor. Leather armor should be good. We will be traveling a lot, and we need to be swift. I considered chain mail made from lighter materials that are protective and sneaky at the same time, but it might be too pricey. I pointed at the leather armors and threw the pouch of gold to the merchant. The merchant hurriedly put the set of armors to my cart. And about the sizes... We won’t have any problems because we have nearly identical features as we are all skeleton soldiers. There are exceptions, of course, but most of us are regular size skeletons. "Thank you very much! Come again!" Aren’t these guys too happy and polite? What the hell? It might be that I was not used to it because most of the time in the great tomb, small-time skeletons like me get treated like stone statues. I was also in need of a map. I went inside a bookstore and browsed their collection. Continental maps, world maps, regional maps, the shop had a wide range of maps available. I pointed out the map for this continent. The response of the owner shocked me. "One gold coin for that, sir." WHAT!? And then, to confirm, I also pointed to the regional maps. "500 silver coins for each regional map". There was money aside from gold coins! Did I waste 200 gold coins on average equipment? I could have gotten all of the equipment for ten gold altogether if I knew the prices. Damn these human merchants. Frustrated, I bought a continental map and the north region and south region map for two gold coins. I don't need a world map. Hopefully, I won't need it, and we will be able to find a safe place on this continent. Each pouch had around 100 gold coins — what a loss. Why was not this in my common knowledge!? Maybe gold did not have that high value back in my time when I was still human. There are also spell books on sale and monster registries. And this awesome book. "Everything You Need to Know About the Human Race." Oh. We are going to need this to check the current power levels of humans. The thugs did not seem to be strong, but the military is the ones that we need to pay attention to. The thugs looked like they only operated in the city too, so ordinary villagers were stronger than them because, in villages, it would not be rare to encounter wild monsters or dangerous animals. This forced people to live on the frontier villages to train themselves and be battle-ready. I also believe those kinds of thugs won’t exist anymore in the future because the military doesn't have any enemies to fight anymore and will be directed to preserve public order. Bye-bye thieves. I bought the book for ten gold coins. Expensive. I looked at the spells and monster registries. I also looked at the profile for skeletons. Weak to fire. Weak to holy. Strong against ice and water. It cannot be affected by abnormal effects — strong compatibility with ice and lightning spells. Exceptions are also common in the Skeleton race such as a Flame Skeleton Soldier would be strong against fire and weak against ice and water spells, and able to produce fire spells. I looked under the profile of Skeleton Soldier. Weakest of the Skeleton race. Easy to defeat by hitting the joints with sword handles and blunt weapons. Strong against cutting and piercing weapons. Small resistance to ice and water spells. Spells that are found in skeleton soldiers: , , (rare). ? I looked at the description of Icy touch because I did not know about this skill. : by focusing negative energies into hands, the caster will be able to deal with ice damage when touching enemies. I’ll try that later. is always active though, but ? Let see later if I have that rare skill. I continue reading the profile. Variations: Normal Skeleton Soldier, Fire Skeleton Soldier, Exploding Skeleton Soldier, Golden Skeleton Soldier. Others could exist but have not yet been discovered. Possible evolutions: Skeleton Archer, Warrior, or Officer. Hmm... Officer sounds good. I wonder how we could evolve, though. I continue reading. Evolution Theory: Skeletons evolve by killing living creatures and taking their souls and converting them to negative energy. Really? I bought the book and spellbooks about ice and lightning. . . . . When I went outside the bookstore, I heard some people conversing and got something good. Villager 1"Hey, did you know? A group of skeletons are still alive and fighting with the main forces." Villager 2: "The Skeleton King was slain, right?" Villager 1: "It seems that killing the king won’t stop his servants." Villager 2: "The Duke, huh..." Villager 2: "Who knows... he might take a few villages with him before he's taken down." The two villagers looked very worried as they went on with their conversation. At first, I thought this was my group, but it seems that there is still a group of undead that is strong enough to fight back. We could team up with them and escape from the north region! Villager 1: "They are clashing right now near the south-west border of the region." Villager 2: "They should fall soon. With the paladins on our side, undead won’t have a place anymore in this world." The Skeleton Duke? Isn't he the strongest undead general? It was weird how he was not in the final battle. Some powerful enemies must have halted him. I gulped, or I thought I did. I need to move my brothers as soon as possible. We need to meet up with that group. I walked quickly to the gates of the village to leave, but a guard suddenly walks up to me and ask. "Hey, you. Can I see your permit?" Permit? I was still pulling the cart filled with equipment during this. Oh. So, one would need a permit to buy multiple combat equipment. I stood there frozen. I don’t know what to do. Should I make a run for it? But that would expose me and there's a high chance that I will get caught. Suddenly another guard shouts. "Thief! Thief!" A kid was running carrying a bag and getting the attention of the guards. The guards chased the kid. Lucky break there. The kid looked like Souta. I thanked him in my mind and went through the gate. . . . When I got outside, I saw the Skeleton Slaves again... they were locked in a caged along with other types of slaves. There were five of them in one small cage. I can't just leave them there... I approached a man there who looks like the owner of the slaves. Since I could not talk, I pointed at the Skeleton Slaves, and with my gloved hand, I asked for five. "Hmm... They're really expensive. Not a lot of slavers have them since they're being hunted right now..." I nodded. "20 gold each." My pouch contained 100 gold coins, so I threw him one. "Huh... Glad to do some business with you. Just make sure to keep the chains on them. They're not that strong, but they can work non-stop." He showed me such an annoying smile that I almost stabbed him right there. I'm glad that I was able to keep it in. After we got away from the village, I showed my face to the Skeleton Slaves. I removed their chains after that. I would've told them that they're free to go, but they don't have anywhere to go. The skeletons followed me even after they lost their chains.

Cheep!?
Charles Monroe survived the disappearance of his parents, did his best to hold things together for himself and his sister. He survived when she, too, vanished, leaving behind nothing but a cryptic note. He was devastated, but he kept moving forward as best he could. Cancer didn’t put him down, and after suffering through several rounds of chemotherapy, Charles Monroe thought that things might finally be looking up. That is, until a virulent strain of ebola swept through the city. With his immune system strained as it is, the odds don’t look good for Charles. It claims that it needs his help and that it can give him a second life, one far away from all the pain he’s ever known. So, Charles answers as any reasonable person would. He says no. Charles isn't ready or willing to die yet. But, as with everything else to this point, even his choice to keep fighting is taken from him all too soon. With no other option but the dark oblivion of death, Charles chooses to make a deal with the spirit of a distant world that's seeking a wild card in its battle against the gods, monsters, and mortals that threaten its existence. Someday, he’ll find where his family went. Someday, he’ll uphold his end of the bargain and hunt beings powerful beyond anything he’s ever known. Someday, he might even – hatch? “CHEEP!?” Things to Know: -Cheep!? Will release on a minimum weekly schedule. -After a backlog of chapters, posting will slow, but in the interim you can expect a chapter a day up until roughly 25 chapters. -This story at times will potentially carry some heavy moments, but the tone is intended to be lighter overall. -There are invisible game-like elements in this story, but nothing so concrete as a dedicated gamelit novel. -I personally have some issues with anxiety, so I may or may not interact with the community a lot. I'll try if anyone has questions, but I can't guarantee that it'll be consistent. -MC is a non-human lead, and will never actually become human. Romance will potentially happen between side-characters, but not with the MC. -MC IS NOT THE ONLY VIEW POINT. I have to put that out there because people sometimes hate alternate PoV's in a story. None of them will be filler, and they'll be there only to give a little bit more nuance and meaning to the world that the MC has stepped in, or is about to be imminently important. I'll try to keep them down, but this also helps to prevent me from burning out getting trapped in one view. -Most of all, I hope that this story is enjoyable to you, and that you have a great time reading it! -Written by Michael Adams, Cowritten/Edited by Summer Kent

The Chromagnum's Sacrifice
Seventeen years ago, the Chromagnum fell from the sky. It's impact shattered the world, and brought the society to its knees. As humanity slowly pulled itself together, they realized that the Chromagnum brought with it a poison that corrupted the living. Abominations began cropping up around the crash site. Monsters with powdery black skin, and glowing orange eyes. Monsters who seemed hell-bent on consuming. Destroying everything in their path, the monsters swept eastwards towards the kingdom of Elendial. A war raged. And humanity crumpled. Retreating deep within their strongholds as the land became ruled by the corrupted creatures spawned by the Chromagnum. Then a leader arose, and humanity rallied. King Magnus drove back the slavering hordes and fought to bring peace to the land once more. However our story does not chronicle King Magnus’ rise to power. Nor does it detail how he collected the elites of the kingdom and forged them into the sharpest of blades. No. Our story tells the tale of young Ril Renar. An orphan. Alone, rejected by society. Ril travels across Elendial searching desperately for a family to call his own. Along the way he will find friends and struggle mightily to convince them to make a space in their hearts for him. Book 1 - Complete (0-30) Book 2 - Ongoing (31-) This story is a softcore progression classic fantasy with LitRPG elements. The story is about searching for family, love, loss, sacrifice, and of course power. The content warnings are mild.

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
