Chapter 574: [ Clash against the Dragon King (2) ]
“… Although I don’t know how a human can be crowned as a Monster King… but that indistinct smell of yours, no matter how mismatched they are, they wouldn’t be able to deceive me. You are a human…a mere human…dawning a Monster King Mask!”
The Dragon King snorted. However, contrary to Allen’s, he withdraws his aura.
Eh? What is going on?
For Allen who was eager and beaming with a fighting spirit, the sudden change of events suddenly caught him off-guard. Allen’s body stilled, not knowing how to react! The Dragon King’s change of mind is even more wondrous compared to women—
What is he planning?
But the Dragon King didn’t care about Allen’s reaction and still have his usual smile, “I don’t like humans and I surely wanted to kill you immediately but I will let this one slide.” The Dragon King grinned and acts as if he had done Allen a great favor. “I am not one of those boorish Kings who always dive into battle the instant they found it—this is not a place for a glorious battle between Kings.”
“… …”
Allen seemed to have reign down his anger as his face looks extremely calm, but his eyes were flashing with confusion; “What are you planning?”
“No, I am not planning anything… you’re too over suspicious.”
“… …”
The Dragon King crossed his arms in front of his chest and cocked his head to the right, arrogantly; “With your current power, planning is simply absurd. However, it has been too long since someone dared to ask for a fight against me without fear—you are the first one since a hundred and twenty years. If I am the Dragon King, then you as a human would be a Hero…”
“However,” The Dragon King stepped one step forward. The air beneath his foot created ripples as if he was standing at the surface of the water, “…too bad, you are too weak…”
Allen frowned.
The Dragon King’s expression was calm as he said with a pair of praising eyes, "Kin of mine, I can see that you’re still young, not even fifty of years in age. And so, it indeed gives me a surprise to see you entered such a realm and achieve this kind of power and status. I admired. The speed of your advancement can only be described as a miracle. In this world, I can even say you are the greatest genius among all races of the Celestial Realm that I have ever seen! Your talents have even exceeded even mine!"
“… …”
“…However, you are too weak to want to fight me. And so, fighting you would be no fun for me…what would I gain? Although I can kill you, that is all that…” The Dragon King shrugged. “And so, I’m giving you a chance—entertain me. I’ll give you time to grow—you are the first one to stand against me bravely for a very long time. Waiting for a short time, wouldn’t be too much a request to fulfill, right?” he laughed loudly.

“… And so, although I don’t like humans, to savor a fun that had almost been forgotten by me—I shall let you slide. But time will come, I will take your life… so grow faster…” The Dragon King grinned evilly. The expression on his gaze was like looking a prey.
Allen finally understands—this is the composure of the strong. Though it’s not something he couldn’t understand…
“You know… I don’t like humans that much either. So it would do me pleasure not to call me like that…” a faint smile across Allen’s lips.
?!! The Dragon King’s eyes widened a bit, then he chuckled, “I know right… people like you aren’t as disgusting as those humans who just go along with the crowd. That’s why you were crowned as a Monster King…you’re unique among them. I was muddled, please let me withdraw the words I had said…”
“I think it’s pretty obvious…”
“Ha ha ha, I’m liking you more…”
Mireya and the others, as well as the Dragon King’s entourage, could only stand there, looking foolishly at the two young kings in surprise. Both of them were extremely eager to fight and kill each other just now but the moment they saw each other… they suddenly started conversing like old rivals.
What the heck are they trying to do?
Allen didn't reply to the Dragon King’s rubbish, and the atmosphere between the two groups became extremely tense as only the Dragon King was the one laughing. The Dragon King’s eyebrow twitched from the awkward atmosphere, *cough he coughed up, “Hmph! How absurd, a man without humor. You’re certainly more inferior than I had expected, even your mind is weak~”
“Huh?”
“Laughable!”
“Laughable, you say?” Allen narrowed his eyes, the dragon scales glowed a bluish light. “You don’t know anything…”
After saying that, his figure disappeared and reappeared just above the Dragon King.
His leg swept, making a sound of wind being cut.
“Your Majesty!!”
“You dare!!”
Allen’s sudden move angered the Dragon Kings entourage and was about to rush up. Mireya and the others as well. However, before they could approach the two, a sudden force field stop them from interfering.
“Hoo?”
The Dragon King blocked the kick with his left arm with ease and look at Allen grinningly. Allen wasn’t the least bit fazed, there he instantly twisted his body in midair and made a backward roundhouse kick with a wind-cutting sound.
…the Dragon King had already read that attack from his previous preparation movement and had already expected it, but Allen sure pulled it off. As always, Allen’s athletic ability was extraordinary in that it even left the Dragon King somewhat surprised.
If you want to fight, why wait? Allen’s eyes narrowed.

Looking down on me, who do you think you are?!
Mentally impressed, the Dragon King casually ducked down and dodged the kick. Following, he swiftly reached out his hand for Allen’s back, who was full of openings now, intending to stop his movements—but, the claw that was approaching Allen’s back only passed through his body.
“Oh?!”
The Dragon King once again exclaimed in pleasant surprise.
Passing through the Dragon King’s body, Allen leaped, taking a ten-meter distance.
“…as expected, another outrageous guy,” Allen muttered indifferently. Reading all the descriptions of the attacks seemed so easy and simple but in fact, just one hit would make a small hill disappear instantly. It has that kind of power!
… And moreover, all of this happened less than 2 seconds after Allen made his move!
That was how fast the two of them moved that even left each of their entourage left aghast in awe and shock.
“You have some interesting abilities there… however, you should have finished measuring my ability right? Although you might not agree, you don’t have a choice. By your current power, you are no match for me, give it up~” The Dragon King muttered with a faint confident smile.
Allen frowned. Suddenly realizing he had failed to catch the true drift of the person in front of him!
A while ago, Allen was sure that the Dragon King was eager to fight as well… and even probably kill him. However, suddenly he changed his mind and even proposed to retreat. Hmph! Extremely arrogant! Although Allen was always calm and collected, what he always hates the most is being looked down upon!
“Anyway, I hope that you have the courage to find me after descending to the origin world," The Dragon King told him with a slight smile as he turned around. “There, I won’t sure mercy anymore… though, make sure to increase your strength… or else, I would surely feel disappointed,”
“…Did I ask you to leave?”
“…?!”
The Dragon King frowned. He stops and turned around, slightly annoyed. This guy, is his head made up of cotton? Is it just full of air?
Seeing the irritation on the Dragon King’s expression, Allen can’t help but grin. Do you think personal power is the only thing in this world? Just because you are more powerful than me, doesn't mean I can't beat you? Hmph!
Allen trusted his hand in front of him and then, a black hole appeared in front of his reached out a hand. In that black hole, a black thing shot out and latched on Allen’s wrist as if it as being pulled by gravity. A black men’s cuff bracelet with a strange design that looks like an obsidian skull with a pair of horns on the forehead. There was a pair of chain dangling on each side and a single chain that connects to a ring in the middle finger which has a form of a long sharp nail.
Clenching his fist, Allen muttered with a cold, indifferent voice; "No need to wait for that. I will let you test me right now, to see whether I have the qualifications to kill you or not."
Bang—!!!
Layers of cracks appeared on the air. It literally cracked as the two eye sockets of the skull flowed in bright daylight. Allen’s body was then enveloped by a blinding crimson light before—Ziiing! He disappeared once again.
“What?!” Not only were Mireya and the others and the Dragon King’s companion caught off guard, but even the Dragon King was also flabbergasted. He became extremely furious. How long? He couldn't remember how long it had been since the time he becomes a Monster King that someone had had the guts to provoke him.
He had already said that he would let him grow up first before killing him…!
And yet he was thinking of challenging him.
Is this guy alright in the head…?!
"Great courage, since you have decided to take the initiative, then don't blame me for chopping you down, Human King!" The Dragon King furiously bellowed. His expression becomes extremely cold.
However, probably due to the Skull Cuff bracelet, Allen’s speed was even faster than before that the Dragon King had a hard time following him with his own eyes. Even the point of teleportation was extremely unpredictable!
Although there was quite a distance between the two of them, Allen’s blurry figure seemed to have unleashed his power as he rushed towards his target in large strides as booms echoed in his wake. “—Don’t you dare LOOK DOWN ON ME—YOU DAMN LIZAAARRDDDD!!!”
Bang!!!
Before the Dragon King could react, a massive blow came on his plank.
“Gah?!” The impact made a cracking noise and the Dragon King’s body shot towards the ground like a cannonball!
BoooOOOmmmMMM—!!!

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
