《Woke Up a Tree.》Chapter 11 - Don’t make deals with the Devil.

Kendra didn’t know how all this had happened. She stood in front of a mirror and adjusted her clothing. She was wearing ant chitin armor. It acted like plate mail armor. It was very durable and difficult to pierce.
Her mind wandered back to the time after her disastrous attempts to explore the tree.
She had awoken to the most enticing smell she had ever smelled. It curled around her and teased her. She could almost see the smell wafting through the air. She awoke and began to search for the source. In her mind, it reminded her of her grandma’s apple pie. She missed her grandma. She had died years before. Kendra had tried to learn how to cook from her grandma but she just wasn’t talented in that area. It was a regret she had.
Without thought she followed the smell. The source was always just out of reach. Before she knew it, she was in the tree. By herself. Finally the danger she was in managed to snap her from her reverie. But by then it was too late, she was already in the tree and surrounded by ants. She tried to retreat but a group behind her blocked her exit. She thought about attacking but she hadn’t brought any weapons with her. She wasn’t even wearing her armor. She was well and truly borked.
The ants crowded around her, waving their arms. These silly little bugs were herding her. She was indignant to be treated in such a fashion. The ants were herding her deeper into the tunnels. The tunnels had a strange blue glow. There was no obvious source for the light. The light pulsed and flickered. Shadows moved and writhed across the floor to the ceiling. It was a mesmerizing effect.
She was finally led into a gallery filled with eggs. The eggs glowed in different colors. Blue and red were the predominant colors. Different shades flowed and coruscated over the eggs. Sitting in the center of the room was the largest ant she had ever seen. The ant chittered at her. It stopped. It seemed like it was waiting for a response.

“Hello.” Kendra tentatively said as she waved her hand in a lazy arc. The ant chittered and clacked some more. They both waited. A smaller ant came into view. The smaller ant appeared to be carrying a box in its mandibles. The ant moved slowly forward and stopped half way between the big ant and Kendra. The ant placed the box on the ground and slowly moved away.
Noone moved for a few moments. Finally the large ant extended a fore claw and pointed at the box. Kendra seemed to get the idea. She cautiously moved towards the box and opened it. Inside was a glowing fruit. It was the same fruit Jason and Kendra had tried to acquire. It felt like an eternity had passed but in reality it had only been a few weeks.
It seemed like she was being offered the fruit. She cautiously took it. She thought about just putting it in her pocket and leaving but something told her she was supposed to eat it right then and there. She tentatively took a small bite. A burst of sweet juice ran into her mouth. It was the most delicious thing she had ever eaten in her life. A warm feeling began to spread from her mouth and down her body. She could feel something traveling through her.
“Hello Human.” A voice echoed in her head. “Would you like to make a deal?” The voice whispered.
Yeah, she was really borked.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

The Monster Inside: The First Vampire
Despite appearances, there was once a time where monsters did not exist. Where peace and prosperity reigned over all life. But those sinful and demonic forces that had hidden themselves in the shadows just couldn't help themselves could they? They wanted a piece of that prosperity too. They wanted to taint it, corrupt it, revel in its dark side. This is the story of a boy who was tainted. Of a boy who unintentionally bore a seed of sin and who in his naivety let it out. This is the story of how that boy was shamed and disgraced. Of how he was outcast for simply being. This is the story of how that boy learned to embrace the darkness that made him different. A darkness that would later make him known as the Lord of Night. Note to Reader: I understand this book is not for everyone, if there is a writer that can write to please everyone, I have never heard of them. The MC can be frustrating in his decisions as he learns to grow and accept what and who he is. I believe this reality is unavoidable. That being said, if you feel the need to give a review, please do so, just know that I will report you if all that review seems to do is blab toxic language and insult my literary choices without giving constructive advice or alternatives. That's not just a me policy, that's a policy of this website. I'm not writing this note because I'm a writer who does not acknowledge that there are faults in my work. I know there are. That's what happens when it hasn't been professionally edited by someone other than the author. I'm saying this because I'm sick of reading 1 star or 0.5 star rated reviews that seem to do nothing but hate on the book because they don't like the story. No comments on grammar, ways to improve or suggestions for better story arcs. Just plain hate. It's not on, and I frankly shouldn't have to write this note, but needed to get it off my chest. In saying all that, thank you to those who do leave reviews that don't fall into the above category. Your appreciation of my work, or alternatively, your willingness to give advice for improvement, is appreciated.

Infested
One billion people from one hundred thousand universes have been dropped onto a singular planet five times larger than Earth. In the corner of their eye were three numbers: 1,000,000,000. 15. 10. Nobody could figure out what it meant until fifteen years after the initial transportation, as out of the blue, a message repeated itself in their minds for twenty-four hours. “Only ten can return. The rest will die. There is no time limit,” Following the global message, genocides ran rampant, with established friendships broken, families ripped apart, blood alliances betrayed, and leaders felled in seconds. How? [The Evgnomon] The Beholden; hidden throughout the realm were artefacts: weapons, information, tools from beings and societies of a higher plane. It was up to the humans to scour the land and take them by hook or by crook if they ever wished to go back. Whisked into this world as a mere babe, I suppose it was lucky I didn’t die in the chaos. But as I stare into the rotten, tattered pages of the accursed book laid upon the pedestal in front of me; and the unnerving gaze of our professor trained onto the back of my head silently pressuring me to become the avatar of grotesques unspeakable and undecipherable to the human mind. O, how I wish I did...
