《Hero Delivery》chapter 23

In the in-between chaos between, worlds, and universes, where chaos is constant. A truck is driving in a bubble of its own created reality. A highway through the chaos constantly forming and disappearing. Two people sit in the cabin of the truck.
Far in the distance in a place where nothing should exist another bubble of reality is barreling towards them.
“Is that. Is that another truck?” The woman leans forward to get a better look at the oncoming bubble, “Holy shit it is!”
The woman looks to the man who looks just, if not more surprised than her. The man begins to slow the truck pulling it over to the side, and stopping. The oncoming vehicle seeing these actions does the same.
Two semi-trucks stop on either side of a road by the combined bubble of reality, a highway floating in nothingness.
The woman stared in disbelief before commenting, “I thought you were the only one.”
The man stared at the truck across from them, it was the same size as his but a different color, green, unlike his beautiful blazing red. The man distracted answered like in a dream, “You know what? I did too.”
“That's a surprise.” The woman raised an eyebrow then a silly thought occurred to her, “That's not gonna just be you in a mustache is it?”
The man snorted, snapping him out of his daze, “Let's find out.”
Two people exit the red truck and on the other side, a single man exits his green one.
The man stands with a cowboy hat looking over his doppelgangers, although the two men looked nothing alike, this man shorter, and gruffer looking. The man in the cowboy hat's eyes pass over the woman and he raises an eyebrow.
The three people stare for a long time before anyone dares to take a step forward. It was the man from the red truck who took the first step queuing the rest to meet in the middle of a road, floating in nothing.
“This is a first.” The man in the cowboy hat said.
“You're telling me. I can't believe you use a truck too.” The man said gesturing to a large green truck.

“Yeah,” The cowboy looked back at his truck wistfully, “Felt right, you know.”
The man looked at his own truck, “Yeah.”
“You picked a truck?” The woman asked snapping the two men back to the strange situation. They both looked at each other and laughed embarrassed.
“Of course, well…” The man started trying to cover up his embarrassment, “It was a carriage for a while.”
“Did you ever use a wagon?” The cowboy asked excitedly.
“Oh!” The man smile big laughing, “I forgot about that.”
“Or blocked it out.” The cowboy added
The smile faded from the man as memories of a time having to use a wagon, “Sounds about right.”
“What are you 2 talking about?” The woman asked trying to figure out what the two of them were talking about.
“Our vehicle.” The man pointed to his truck, “It evolved with the universe. Changing with the times. I got a truck and have just been using it since.”
That made sense to the woman except for the fact that they have seen a bunch of much higher-tech worlds with better vehicles, “Why not use a vehicle from a high-tech world?”
The man shrugged “Tried it. It was nice for a while but became too…impersonal.”
“Same.” The cowboy agreed.
The man and cowboy began to scrutinize each other, both appearing to look for something, until the man asked, “Alternate version of me?”
The cowboy scrutinized the man closer even sniffing him before answering, “Don't think so. I think I'm my own thing.”
“What do you haul?” The man asked.
“Seeds.”
“Like metaphorical seeds?” The woman asked thinking he was talking about souls in some metaphor.
The cowboy shook his head, “No, actual seeds, and other stuff. I deliver them to new worlds.”
“Ooh,” The man snapped his fingers things falling in place, “That actually explains why so many different worlds have the same foods.”
The woman started to understand what he was saying, he was bringing literal plant seeds to other worlds, spreading them everywhere, “I thought that was a multiverse thing, not the plants were literately delivered.”

The man spoke voicing what he was starting to understand, “It is, but mainly for alternate earths. We've been to tons of planets with no connections at all to earth. Places light-years away.”
The cowboy nodded confirming what the man was saying.
“Oh.” The woman exclaimed.
The man was on a roll and kept talking, “That also explains why people from other worlds can stomach the foods.”
“What about the diseases? Food-related or immune system-related?” The woman asked wondering about some of the smaller things, she was now wondering about.
The man “Either a system deals with it or it's part of a blessing.” The man commented offhandedly
The cowboy smiled seeing the two's little instruction. Thinking it was his turn he asked, “What do you haul?”
The man snapped out of his pondering, realizing he never told him, “Oh! I'm hero delivery.”
“So souls?” The cowboy's eyes narrowed.
“Yeah, but usually to protect, and help plants grow.” The man defended himself
“Protect?”
“From the void, from itself, from various monsters, self-destruction, from other screwed up summonings.” The man listed off various ways that he found worlds would die.
The cowboy was thinking as he tentatively spoke, “So I'm a begining, and you preserve, wonder if there are more of us?”
“Now that I’ve met you I’m inclined to believe it is very likely. I wouldn’t even be surprised if we ran into others before, but they weren’t drivers like us, and were just doing their own thing.” The man speculated.
“So what are you guys?” The woman interrupted asking something she’s been a wonder for a while.
“She doesn't know?” The cowboy asked raising his eyebrows/
“First time she's asked.” The man answered.
The woman narrowed her eyes, “Are you going to tell me?”
“You already know.” The man said calmly.
The woman thought this was one of those times he was trying to lead her to an answer, and all the clues were available, but she just didn’t know where they were, “Well I'm dumb. Explain it to me.”
“I'm a delivery man.” The man said with a big shit-eating grin.
The woman rolled her eyes, “Not that dumb.”
“No, it's true.” The cowboy chimed in.
The girl gave the cowboy a sardonic look and before she could say anything the man added, “It's what we are.”
“Delivery men?” The woman asked skepticism heavy in her voice.
“Through most of the time.”
The woman turned to the cowboy, “So since the beginning, you've been delivering seeds?”
“In one way or another.”
The woman turned to the man, “And you have been delivering heroes?”
“He might be older than me, but I'm a sense. Yes.”
“Are you concepts or something?” The woman asked trying to wrap her head around the whole thing.
“Wow, I know it was a sarcastic guess but she got it in one.” The cowboy said reevaluating the woman.
“Wait. Really?” The woman said in disbelief
“Yes and no. At least it's the closest thing I can come up with, and by his response, I would say it was his as well.” The man said.
“You don't know?”
“Not really we just came one day knowing what we needed to do. At least that what happened to me.” The man said looking at the cowboy.
“It sounds the same to me.”
The woman looked back and forth at the two deliverymen, “But you're both so...human”
Both men smiled, but it was the cowboy who spoke, “Thank you.” Then added, “I have a better question for you.”
“Huh.” The woman was surprised he wanted to ask her something.
“What is it?”
“What are you?”
The woman wasn’t sure what he meant, she had always been with the man except…,
“...a hitchhiker?
“Neat will I get one?” The cowboy asked, turning to the man.
“Just need to pick one up.” The man said smiling.
The cowboy started walking back to his truck, only stopping to say one thing, “Take care of her, get her to her destination.”
“I will.”
The woman stood there confused by the interaction.
