《Reborn with 1600 IQ》6. University of magic - A small talk with the noble

Should I speak to her? What does she want from me? Did she wait for me? She probably did. Can’t really ignore her, but I can’t say that I want to talk to her. I’m not one of those guys, who thinks that girl is interested in him only because she looks at him. Well, this and also I can more or less deduce what others think about me from the way they look at me. More or less, because humans emotions aren’t really logical…
“Is something the matter?” I asked the girl that was standing before me, and when I did I noticed a boy that was standing near her.
Lucas? Well, it’s not my lucky day. Should have just go to my other classes. Let’s make it quick, shall we?
“Yes…” Emily responded, with a weak voice.
She was a rather small girl, with a childish appearance. Her long black hair, and big blue eyes were really captivating, and her face was that of someone of high birth. Even if she was rather quiet, and unssocial, she was still fairly popular among the boys.
“Could we make it quick? I have classes soon, and I don’t want to be late.” I responded with a smile, and Lucas looked at me with angry eyes.
“You are but a lowly commoner, listen when…”
“No, he’s right. We should make it quick.” the petite girl that was standing near him stopped him from saying anything more, and then she looked at me “You don’t really come to lectures, do you?”
A question? Why? Can’t imagine her waiting in here for me, only to ask something like this. A second meaning?
“I don’t, but they aren’t compulsory, are they?” as I asked this, the girl looked at me with blank expression.
“Yeah, they are not…”
What with this bored way of speaking?
“I can’t imagine that you waited in here only to ask me this. Can we cut to the chase?” after I said this, Lucas once again looked at me with anger. Is his high birth so important to him, or are there other reasons for his behaviour? Well, it’s best not to think about emotions logically, because they aren’t logical at all.
“You are right. The thing I wanted to ask you, includes our recent test. The one including various applications of magic. I’m sure you remember, because you wrote it perfectly, without even one mistake.” the girl said, and tilted her head a little “You do remember?”

“I do remember writing a test like this, but I don’t remember getting full marks on it. They didn’t even return those tests to us, because they are still being checked. Are you sure that you aren’t mistaken?” as I asked this, I smiled a little.
I already knew the answer to my own question, but it was more natural to ask.
“Oh, don’t worry about it. As you may know I’m the daughter of the principal of this school. Getting my hands on a test is an easy task.” she responded, with her usual blank expression.
“Should you say things like this? One may think that you could use this power to cheat.” a slight insult made by me, but it didn’t mean anything.
She’s a genius, a real genius. So smart that she doesn’t seem human to many of the normal students. Well, maybe I shouldn’t be the one to say things like this…
“What?! A lowly commoner like you? How you dare?! Probably you are the one that cheats on your tests! Getting full marks, when you don’t have any real education.” the boy once again started shouting, attracting the attention of people near us.
Well, I don’t really care about his insults, but I don’t want to just stay here, and listen to his insignificant words. I would rather go to my next class.
“I don’t know what you want, but I can’t just stay here and listen to him…” I wanted to end my sentence, but I was interrupted by the girl.
“Shut up…” she said, with a little irritated face. When she did that, Lucas looked at me with a victorious smile.
“Did you hear her, commoner? You are but a…”
“Didn’t you hear me? Shut up.” Emily said, and looked him into his eyes “Could you just leave us alone for a moment, if you can’t even behave yourself?”
If I was a normal boy, I would probably burst into laughter right now, but I don’t care about the nobles at all. I don’t care if they compliment each other, and I also don’t care if they insult each other. Yeah, who would care about the things like that?
“Hey! Commoner! Why are you smiling! You…”
“Just go!” I saw this girl shouting for the first time in my life, and Lucas probably too, because he disappeared really fast. Of course after looking at me with the eyes full of hatred.
“You caused a little scene.” I said, while looking around us. A lot of people were watching us, and when they noticed that I know it, they looked away from us.

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” she just responded with her bored expression, and then she continued talking “About the test, and the way I obtained it. I hope you can keep it to yourself… I mean the way I obtained it.” she then said, and I just nodded.
“Well, now that we have this out of our way, let me ask you the question that I wanted to ask your from the beginning.” she said, and tilted her head, white looking into my eyes “Who was your teacher? Where did you learn? Who are you?”
A lot of questions for a girl. Are you hitting on me? Well, all jokes aside, I can understand why she asks about those things, but I should play dumb for now.
“I can understand that a commoner writing a test without any mistakes might seem weird, but there is no reason for questions like that. I was taught by a scholar in my old city, and he told me to start my education in here. I learned everything from him, and I am but a commoner.” I responded, and she looked at me with her usual blank stare, but this time she seemed to be thinking.
“You know why I ask you those questions, don’t you?” she then said, and pierced me with her gaze.
“You think that I cheated?” I responded and smiled.
Just play dumb. She wouldn’t…
“Stop playing dumb. I know that you didn’t cheat.” her words were quick, and her eyes were still staring at me.
A smart one, I’m sure of it. Smart and persistent. A bookworm, that likes to read. A weak girl, that can make nobles go away with only her words.
How should I take care of it?
“Then what is the reason you ask those questions?”
“You know.” she responded instantly.
Of course I know. My answers on tests aren’t really “normal”. Even if I have a lot of knowledge from books, I still answer the questions using my intelligence. She got her hands on my test, but she isn’t stupid. She would know that I didn’t cheat, if my answers looked the way they look. It must mean only one thing, she is…
“I’m interested in you Matthew.” the girl said, and approached me a little “Even my father is interested in you. Did you know that?”
I just looked at her, and didn’t say a word.
“One of the teachers told him about you. A commoner, that can answer every question. A commoner, that uses his own methods to solve problems, and his methods are always right. You know what my father said, when he looked at your tests?” she looked at me, and approached me even more “Beautiful. This is what he said. Why do you think he said that?”
“Who knows…” I responded, and backed off a little.
“Who are you Matthew?” her blank expression changed a little, as she asked me this.
“I’m but a commoner, that wants to learn how to use magic.”
“How did you know what was on previous lecture? You don’t come to them, and your friend couldn’t tell you either.” she asked, and took a step towards me.
“He told me, but he forgot…”
“Don’t joke around. You didn’t know, I am sure of it. What made you think, that we learned about the flow of offensive mana?”
The look on her face was serious, but she didn’t seem angry. The way I saw it, she looked interested. Well, she really is intelligent, but I don’t really care about her, or her father.
“You are sure of it? Why? He really told me about it, when I asked him in the dormitory, but it looks like he forgot. I know that it might seem romantic, to think that a commoner has an enormous talent, but it’s everything but that. Many people ace their tests, and I am but one of them. My answers are just different, because of lack of the proper education.” when I said this, she took a step backwards, while still looking at me.
“And my father? What of him? You want to say that he is wrong too?” she asked, with her usual blank expression.
“Your father can’t be wrong?”
When I said this, I saw anger in her eyes. Even if her expression stayed the same, I could still feel, that I touched the subject that meant a lot for her. Well, it’s good for me.
“You are but a commoner, and he…” she said quietly, and then looked at me “Yeah, you are right. Forget that I asked you anything. I n-need to go now.”
Well, it works for me.
“It was a pleasure.” I just responded, and looked as she slowly walked away. After that I went to my next class.
