volume 2 upgrade specialist interval chapter 42 - overwhelming talent
Teleporting to my origin plane, I greeted Ourous.
Ourous: UUUUUU, why do you not visit often. It's boring just sitting here.
Solomon: you can watch what I'm doing though can't you.
As far as I knew, she could observe all of my actions.
Ourous: I can, but when you're not in a mission you only do boring stuff.
Acting like a small child, Ourous complained about boredom.
Solomon: all right, all right. I'll visit more often, now can you tell me something?
Ourous: it's a promise then, what do you want to know?
Solomon: can I learn skills without the system?
Hearing such a basic question, Ourous sounded confused.
Ourous: of course you can, you already saw skill books, right?
Solomon: no, I mean without any outside influence, just by practising.
I explained what I meant in more detail.
Ourous: oh, you mean like that. You can, but most people don’t bother. The speed at which you can learn skills depends on your talent.
If it was a matter of talent I could see why most didn’t bother. The majority of people couldn't train an F rank skill in under half a year. Even talented people would struggle to learn D rank skills in the same amount of time. What was the point of wasting time learning a skill if you could buy it instantly?
Solomon: is there a way to test your talent?
Ourous: there is, I can do it for free.
This was great news, being able to see if I had enough talent to learn skills fast meant I could see if it was worth doing. Though after her saying that the talent of most people was terrible I didn't hold much hope.
Solomon: so how do it?
Ourous: I can scan you and get a reading of your talent.
Solomon: what type of reading?
I was hoping it would be something easy to understand.
Ourous: simple one number. The average is one. For most talented people it's between 5 and 10. Above 15 it would be considered a genius.
For normal people, it requires several months to learn a G rank. For the talented, it would be a month. As for geniuses, it depends on how high your talent. The highest I've seen is 47. That person could learn a G rank skill every 5 days.
Solomon: alright then, go for it. Test my talent.
At my request, a ray of red light emitted from Ourous. Starting at my feet it moved up my body, eventually settling on my head.
Ourous: all right, the scan's complete. In a second your results will be displayed.
After a few seconds, the red light formed into numbers before my head.
Ourous: and your result is, 100!
Looking at the shining numbers, I was astonished.
Solomon:1,100, are you serious!?
Ourous: it seems like your very talented. Congratulations.
My result was over double what Ourous said the best Genius had.

Solomon: damn, I'm one lucky bastard.
From when I arrived at domain till now, my luck had been astonishingly high.
Ourous: it seems you've broken the record, and by over double no less. With a talent this high you could learn G rank skills every 2 and a half days.
With such a high speed I could learn two skills, maybe even three, by the next mission. But this was just G rank skills. As useful as they were, after reaching F rank they would not be able to stand up.
Solomon: how long would it take to learn an F rank skill?
Ourous: it would take twice the time. It's the same for each rank, the time needed will double.
This was once again surprising. Being able to learn F rank skills in 5 days. If you included the bonuses I got from my dragons fire, I could learn them much faster.
Solomon: this is too op, with my talent I could Learn an F rank skill by the time of the next mission.
Ourous: actually, you can't. Only skills of your rank or below can be learned.
Pouring rain on my parade, Ourous chimed in. Even though it reduced my options, it was still an extremely overpowered talent.
Solomon: oh, that's a shame. Even so, it's still a godly level of luck. So, how do I actually learn the practice for skills?
Ourous: you can buy them from the system. Look.
With a flash, the familiar panel of information appeared before me. Under the recreation tab was the filter "training manuals".
Solomon: why's it under recreation?
Ourous: because it has no practical use. though you can learn the skill from it, it won't help you straight away.
Thinking about it this way, it made some sense.
Solomon: all right then, let's have a look at these.
Unlike with actual skill they didn't cost any tokens. Only at S rank did it start to cost tokens. Even then it was only a G rank token. Looking at the ludicrously low price of skills, I felt a pain in my heart.
Solomon: aaargh, damn. Why did I waste a G rank token on a skill? I could have got another race with that.
If I had known about this before, I would never have brought a skill. Getting a new race was far superior to anyone skill. With a race, I got a new skill and stat increases. The only problem before was that I couldn't tell what skill it would be.
Ourous: it's not a waste. Though you can learn skills in only a few days, it will take a week or so to perfect them. Just because you can use a skill does not mean it's perfect. With skills you buy, they are already at the epitome of perfection.
Learning this made me feel slightly better, though I still was unhappy with the waste.
Solomon: I guess that's true. Well, I'm gonna browse for a bit. Tell me when an hour has gone by.

After a while of scanning through the enhancements, I had picked out 4 of them. Though there were hundreds that I thought would be useful, I restrained myself. Assessing my current fighting style, I decided what I was missing.
The first, most important things was a movement technique. After several fights, I had learnt that it was very hard to dodge attacks without one. As such, I was forced to block more attacks. To solve this I found an interesting skill.
Afterimage technique
25 point cost
A book detailing the zanzoken technique in Dragonball. This technique allows the user to quickly move to another location, leaving an afterimage. Minimum requirement of 200 strength.
Unlike other skills, the descriptions were very short. I guessed this was because I had to learn the details myself. It was very useful that it stated the requirements. otherwise, I may have got an unusable skill.
From what I knew about the technique It was exactly what I needed. In the anime, the person could move behind the opponent before the afterimage disappeared giving the user a chance to attack them.
Though I doubted I could still do that to G rank enemies, it would still let me dodge them.
The next thing I needed was a close combat attack. Though I had my racial skill, the cost was way too severe. I needed to be able to attack at close range while still in my human form.
The skill I found most suitable was this.
Raging sword skill
30 point cost
A book detailing the skill raging sword skill from the legendary moonlight sculptor. When used the energy of the user cloaks their sword, increasing its strength and sharpness. The increase in strength and sharpness is determined by the user's rage. The angrier they become, the stronger the skill. If they reach a strong enough rage they can emit slashes of energy from their sword. Energy required.
Though it was an unconventional skill, it fit my needs. The increase in my weapons strength was very enticing. Especially if I added my enchantment on it. Though I should have done so last mission, I hadn't. I thought as I would be fighting at range, it would be enough as it was.
The other part of the skill that interested me was the effect of rage on it. Though I was not one to become enraged, there were several things that could make me so easily. Like when I thought of the capitalist mages, I felt deep hatred in my gut. I hoped this would be enough to perform the slashes of energy.
The second to last thing that would benefit me was a buff, both for me and my allies.
Basic strengthening
25 point cost
A magic book detailing a nondescript strengthening spell. The spell allows the user to buff the strength of a selected target, the amount is based on the energy used. lasts 24 hours Suitable for the long time empowerment of physical strength.
As we had no one to do this permanently, I temporarily filled the role. The same as I had with enchanting. Though I had a skill for it, it was not my specialisation.
Lastly, I wanted another ranged skill, preferably not an elemental one. The reason was simple. Though my flame serpent art was overwhelming, it had a major weakness. Water.
The attack was fire based, so if I faced an equal attack made of water, I would lose sorely. This was why I wanted a new skill. After a little looking, I had found it.
Wind release: verdant mountain gale
20 point cost
A book detailing the Wind release: verdant mountain gale skill from naruto. The user infuses their energy into a weapon, allowing them to make it float freely. The distance reachable depends on the amount of energy used. Suitable for the control of weapons at a distance.
Though it was not anywhere near as destructive as my flame serpent art, it was much more precise. I wouldn't have to worry about nearby allies as there would be no explosion or fire. Overall it was trading power for accuracy. I also hoped it was much cheaper to use, but that had yet to be tested.
With these skills, I would remove most of the weaknesses I currently had. Though I would still have some, it would not be anywhere near as bad. The skills raging sword and mountain gale would provide an increase in my attack versatility, no longer limiting myself to fire and explosions. The afterimage technique would provide a way for me to move quickly, as well as to dodge attacks. And lastly, the strengthening skill would allow me to increase mine and my allies physical power.
Overall these skills would greatly increase my abilities.
Solomon: Ourous, I'll take these books.
Showing her the screen, I pointed out the books.
Ourous: okey doki, that's a total of 100 points. You now have 1566 points remaining.
With a blinding flash of light, four books appeared in the air. Grabbing them, I examined each one. The first I grabbed had a green cover. On the centre of the cover was a spiralling circle with a triangle attached to its bottom left side. I recognised this as the symbol for the village hidden in the leaves. Because of the symbol, I knew this book would be the mountain gale skill.
Moving on I grabbed the next book, based on its plain brown colour it would be the strengthening skill.
The next book I grabbed had a crimson coloured cover. Embossed in the centre of the cover was a silver sword. To add the finishing touches, deep red tendrils surrounded the sword. I'd guess this was the raging sword skill.
The last book I grabbed had a blue cover. There were three overlapping images of a person on it. This would, of course, be the afterimage technique.
Solomon: alright, that's all I need for now. See you later Ourous.

Flap Merganser: Space Duck
This story began as joke to troll some dude on reddit, but I fell in love with the premise and kind of went crazy writing without any direction or planning. Luckily for me, I spent a couple months convinced I was dying and stepped away from the project. I'm not dying by the way, at least not any more than in the traditional sense. But during that period of inner turmoil, I was able to step back and realize I wasn't too thrilled with the direction this was going. So I have relaunched this project under the name Duck Around and Find Out. Some elements will be the same, and some early chapters may be pretty close to what was in the original draft, but I wanted to get into the action with a bit more haste. That being said, I'm going to leave this up here for now so that you can see how this whole project started. So read it if you want to. Or don't. I don't really care. I'm just happy I don't actually have a terminal cancer.
