Increased Taxes
The halflings were arguing with a few royal guards outside the mine. Among them was the Accountant of the late Lord.
“Nevermind that investigations haven’t occurred yet. You are lucky that paying higher taxes is all you have to do. Your operation is obviously crossing the borders of multiple lords territories by going into Crestfall. Meaning you have to pay taxes to both Lords.

Kib wheels a massive chunk of wall out of the mine with a strip of silver through it. He parks it in front of the accountant. He waves to it and with a huff walks back into the mine.
“A kobold? You are working with a kobold?” The accountant sneers.
“Yeah, you have a problem with that!” El finally steps down off the hill making his presence known. “That kobold is worth more to this village than your oversight.” El walks down towards the man but two guards step in the way.
“Then your whole village is as disgusting as that diseased lizard.” The accountant looks at El with disgust. “Let’s go.” The man turns and mounts his horse.
The guards follow the horse out of the area taking the cart of silver ore with them.
“Alright, enough playing with our next meal. Let’s get to work!” El shoos the halflings into the mine as they all chatter equal statements of hatred for the accountant.

Kib and El walk together towards the dungeon. The rolling grass hills slowly begin to be dotted with trees as they cross the boundary into the forest.
“I don’t know if it’s safe for me or the village to stay here any longer.” Kib sighs.
“Then you’ll come to Crestfall with me.” El smiles.
“What? But I have short legs and no skills. I’d slow you down or get you killed.” Kib shrugs.
“Not true. I would have died in the goblin den had I been alone, but I had you.” El retorts.
“True.” Kib rubs his chin. “I guess I am better than you.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” El protests.
The two laugh as they near the goblin village. This time the village is surrounded by spikes driven into the ground. El lifts a few spikes up and throws them to the side. The two enter the area and goblins knowingly stare at them as they do.

Kib winces at the first sound of a goblin whispering. He did not want to hear more awful things about them.
“Are they going to free us?” Kib hears one of the younger goblins.
Kib smiles and keeps walking alongside El. He tugs on El’s shirt. The teen turns back towards the tiny kobold with purple-hued scales.
“What is it?” El asks.
“Try not to hurt the little green-skinned ones too much.” Kib whispers.
“Alright. I won’t.” El turns back and the two head down the dungeon stairs.

Something breaks underneath El’s boot as he nears the end of the stairs. A panel with four spears on it swings out at El from around the corner.

Golden Energy surrounds El as the trap swings at him. What would have been debilitating injuries completely misses him as a force of energy shunts him backward.
“Well don’t die on the stairs into the dungeon.” Kib remarks.
“Deadly traps are not to be joked about,” El grumbles.
“Unless they were, like, really funny.” Kib smiles as he trots down the stairs past El.
“Damn, that's true,” El mutters to himself.
The two press through the library, past the barracks, and into the siege workshop once again. This time the two bugbears are in there and three goblins are chained to the Ballista.
The first big bear has a huge scar through his midsection and wields a spiked ball on a chain. The second has a scar through his cheek where a bolt had been ripped out of his face. He prepares his javelins.
Kib slings a rock out at the javelin wieldier dealing four damage as El and the chain user charge across the room at each other. The Ballista moves wildly as the goblins are trying to take aim.
El swings his sword and slashes the arm of the Bugbear for five damage. The bug bear swings his chain around and the spiked ball tears into El’s back. The goblinoid twists the chain and pulls down behind him. The spikes rip through El’s shoulders as the ball is dragged through his flesh. It deals eight damage.
A javelin flies through the air and grazes Kib, dealing three damage. El quickly shoulder checks the Bugbear to create distance before slashing out with his sword dealing ten damage, but he pumps two stamina points into the attack dealing two extra damage. The sword strike sends the bugbears head clean off.
El uses his momentum from the strike to clear the distance between him and the javelin wielder. The bugbear tries to stab El with one of his weapons, but El bats the attack away with his sword. A rock from Kib hits the goblin in the gunner seat dealing four damage. With one hit point left the goblin is able to maintain his target and pull the trigger.
The ballista whistles through the air before slamming through El’s leg. The teen screams out in pain and looks down at the large siege bolt that's struck several inches into the stone pinning his leg in place. Blood pours across the flagstone and his screams carry through the dungeon.
The goblins begin reloading as Kib launches another rock dealing four damage to the bugbear. The monster shakes off the blow and lunges at El with a javelin. The teen heaves his sword up deflecting the blow, letting his arm extend, as his sword slices through the throat of the bugbear. The creature slumps backward.

Kib readies another rock and yells at the goblins.
“If you touch that weapon I’ll kill you all.” He spits in goblinoid.
“The keys are on him. Let us go!” One of the goblins squeals pointing at the bugbear with the chain.
Kib releases the goblins who then swarm El. They carefully pull him off the bolt much to his distress before wrapping the wound. They bring cloth from the bedroom and a strange green paste to stop the bleeding.
“You look like a corpse.” Kib shudders seeing how pale El has gotten.
“It’s not the worst thing in the world.” El grits his blood-stained teeth.
“We need to go home.” Kib tries to help El stand.
He staggers to his feet and looks up. Before him is a doorway to a hallway. A long hall with a door at the end of it.
“We need to finish this.” El takes a step towards the doorway.
“I think the same thing, but we can’t. Not with you in this condition!” Kib yells.
“I have to fight!” El staggers forward and rests against the doorway.
“Let me take the lead. Cover me with your crossbow.” Kib steps to El’s side.
“Deal.” El doesn’t argue. Not worth it in his condition.
They come to the end of the hallway and push open the next door.
They enter an office with a hearth, a fine rug, a few animal heads mounted on the walls, and a large wooden desk on the other side of the room. Behind the desk sits a goblinoid man with dull orange skin and long grey hair pulled into a bun. He holds a chain in one hand and an ink quill in the other hand.
“Form a contract with me or I sick my two dogs on you.” The man says slowly.
Two goblin dogs yap at the end of chains. They pull and struggle trying to get closer to the two young adventurers. El taps Kib’s shoulders and motions towards the dog on the right.
“What does the contract entail?” El speaks up.
“50/50 mining rights in my forward village and the equal sharing of our slave forces.” The hobgoblin smiles.
“Thank you.” El raises his crossbow bolt and fires at the hobgob.
The bolt goes through the man’s shoulder dealing seven damage. He winces backward in his office chair letting go of the dogs' chains. Kib charges at the right dog while El whistles at the left dog. He drops his bolter and unsheathes his longsword.
Kib leaps at the dog with a small kobold spear. The dog dodges the blow, twisting its body, but Kib plants the spear into the ground, swings around it without touching the ground, and his tail lashes out. The tip of Kibs tail scratches the dog for 2 damage. The kobold finally lands on the ground and the dog snaps out at him. The dog tackles Kib and tears into the scales of the kobold's throat.

A glow of golden energy surrounds Kib as he grabs the jaws of the dog and pulls the monster’s maw away from his own throat.
The second dog runs at El who quickly throws a hide bracer out and catches the jaw of the dog with it.
The hobgoblin stands and pulls a longbow out from behind the desk. He opens the drawer, grabs an arrow, and takes his time aiming a shot at El.
El slams his blade through the head of the goblin dog and tosses its corpse to the side. He quickly charges towards the hobgoblin and plants his foot in the side of the desk ready to push it at the goblinoid.
Kib once again attacks the goblin dog he’s facing. He vaults over the dog, his tail slashing at its eyes before the spear comes down through its neck. The kobold hops off the dog's body and onto the desk aiming the spear at the hobgoblin.
The hobgoblin clicks his tongue against his cheek and slowly sets his bow down.
“Seem’s I misjudged you two. Why don’t we negotiate the nature of the contract.” The hobgoblin puts his hands flat on the edge of the desk.
“I won’t deal with slavers.” El spits and stabs his longsword forward.
The hobgoblin quickly pulls a blade from beneath the desk parrying the blow. He ripostes slashing out at El’s sword arm. The teen barely maneuvers his sword to deflect the blow. Kib spins his spear around and tries to knock the hobgob over the head with it. The enemy raises his sword catching the spear when Kib’s tail flies over the sword striking the slaver in the face dealing six damage.
The hobgoblin pushes Kib away, stepping back, pushing his back against the wall. El finally pushes the desk in trapping the slaver. Kib strikes his spear through the chest of the goblinoid and then slashes across his face with his tail dealing six damage. The Hobgoblin grabs Kib’s arm and shoves the longsword through his shoulder dealing nine damage.
“Fucking die!” El swings his longsword down cleaving the goblins head in half right as he tries to plead for a deal again.

“Let's get out of here.” El sighs.
The two leave the dungeon and the goblins watch them with interest. They whisper and chatter excitedly.
“He’s dead.” “It’s over.” “We’re free!”
Kib smiles at the sounds of the goblins starting to rejoice. The two adventurers lean on each other as they head back towards town.
