《Dark historian》Chapter 29: searching for a way out

George didn’t know what the two were seeing and it took them a while before their eyes stopped shining. They both got a big smile on their faces and started to laugh simultaneously.
“It seems like we didn’t need to go through all the trouble to kill him, to think he had the audacity to come here without the king’s permission and try to steal our legacy’s.” Said Maria with a big smile on her face.
George didn’t know why but he didn’t feel any pressure coming from her at all and it was like night and day from just a couple of minutes ago. George wonders how someone could go from ruthlessly killing someone to smiling in seconds, he had seen the same thing with Thaddeus and the principal. Was he the one that was abnormal or did these people train themselves to not feel any emotions?
“To think that he had the audacity to offer my son the first stance of the secret bow skill that the third prince created for the secret guard. Even though it’s the weakest skill that the third prince has created it’s still a secret skill that can change the path of a cultivator from mediocre to a master.” Said Thaddeus with a hint of surprise on his face, his son was an archer who was never good enough to enter the third prince's school and had always wished to join the secret guard but just wasn’t strong or talented enough.
“That’s not necessarily true, even though it’s a great skill it’s still a beginner skill and after the big move skills like these will become useless. Besides, I don’t even think he was going to give it to Jon and was just using it to bait him.” Said, Maria, while shaking her head, she was good friends with Jon and was sad about how he had betrayed his father and met his end.
Thaddeus also shook his head and started to bury his son’s remains, he had a sad look on his face and Maria was sitting on the side watching him. George didn’t have a close relationship with his family and didn’t know why Thaddeus would do this for someone who had betrayed him if he was ever in the same situation with his parents or Vincent the only thing he would do was to spit on their corpses.
After Thaddeus was done he started to walk towards the entrance of the palace, Maria also got up and started to follow him. She didn’t have the calm look on her face like Thaddeus had and it looked like she was not ready for what was coming next.

“Do what is right, not easy.” Said Thaddeus and the palace door started to open, Thaddeus turned back and looked at the grave of his son and started to walk inside the palace.
“Big brother, don’t you want to get your memory stone back?” Said Maria still a little hesitant to follow Thaddeus inside.
“There is no point in taking it with me to my grave, let it stay with him and maybe one day someone will find it, even though the chance is almost pretty small.” Said, Thaddeus, while walking inside with Maria following him.
George looked inside the palace and couldn’t see much except for a big hallway with stairs leading up. When the two entered the palace, the memory ended and George was sent back to the present. This time he was prepared and tried to keep consciousness, the pain was even stronger than last time and George didn’t know why the pain was getting stronger with every new memory.
George saw the notifications but didn’t have time to think about it, the pain was still present and his eyesight was starting to go black. Was there no way not to pass out? He didn't think that passing out every time he got a new memory would be convenient and besides, the time he was wasting passed out was too much for someone who had only three days, to begin with.
George opened his eyes and found himself inside the capsule, he had forgotten about the time and was happy that the pain had stopped. George got out and started to do his daily routine, he decided to not stop buying meals for now and just keep doing what Solomon had told him too. It was still the first day he had entered the formation and it was too soon to start saving credits and if there was no way out one or two days wouldn’t make a difference.
When Clara and Omar exited the capsule the three of them had dinner like every night, George didn’t know why but he felt like everyone was pretending to be fine to not worry the others and he decided to just do the same. He didn’t want to make them worried about something they couldn’t do anything about and didn’t want to talk about it anyway, and besides, Clara had enough to deal with anyway.
The rest of the night was the same as always except for Omar asking them how they were doing every hour or so and George was fine with that. He was still thinking about the memories he had seen and what it all meant, and more importantly if there was a way to get out of the formation because if there was no way out, nothing he had seen would matter anyway. Even the secrets of the universe would be useless if you have nobody to share it with.

The next morning came quickly and it was almost time to enter the capsule, George said his goodbyes and entered the capsule.
He was standing in the same spot as last time and had Wilton's ring in his hand. He looked inside the ring and only found a couple of things, the ring had three memory stones with one being the one Thaddeus had given to his student and two empty ones. The other thing he found was the skill Thaddeus and Maria were talking about and lastly a set of winemaking tools Wilton had stolen from Thaddeus.
George didn’t know why the ring didn’t have anything else inside but suspected that it was because Wilton had left most of his belongings in the bank fearing he would lose it if he died, properly by the hand of the king or the third prince.
George didn’t take the skill or memory stone out to inspect and decided to do it later, he was curious about what was inside the castle and wanted to find a way out as soon as possible. If he couldn’t find a way out everything he found would be useless anyway.
George used the same quote Thaddeus had used and the palace door started to open, even though a lot of time had passed the entrance looked the same and there was a big staircase that was going to the top of the castle. The first thing George noticed was that the castle was a lot smaller on the inside than it looked on the outside.
George not seeing any other option started to walk towards the top and was careful of traps. He knew that the chance of him being able to avoid traps made for monsters like Wilton was small to none but he decided to be careful anyway. The staircase leading to the top was connected to every floor and George not wanting to miss anything was searching every room. The whole castle looked cleaned out and George was expecting that it had something to do with the big move.
George was slowly going to the top and was thinking about how the inside of the castle was completely the opposite of the outside. On the outside, the castle looked grand but the inside of the castle looked old. George didn’t know if this was because of the big move and that everything had been removed from the inside of the castle or that the prince liked to live a modest life.
It took George two full days to reach the top floor of the castle, he wanted to inspect everything to make sure he wasn’t missing an important memory. It would have taken him weeks if the castle was not as empty as it was. George was getting a little anxious thinking about how this was his last chance of finding a way out and that the other option was being imprisoned in this place all alone for the rest of his apparently short life.
When George reached the top floor, he saw a big room instead of many small rooms like the other floors, inside was a big round table with eight chairs. The room had a majestic feeling to it and the table and seven of the eight chairs were completely made of gold, the last chair was made of a black substance George didn’t know and it had some drawings on it. George went closer and found golden writing on the black chair.
George couldn’t even tell that the drawings on the chair was a language and this was the first time he had heard about Soul power. He was surprised to notice the image beeing stored in his brain like it would with a memory. George decided to touch the black chair first to see if he could activate a memory with no success. He went past every chair but there was no memory to be activated, just when he was about to give up he remembered the table and walked towards the table. It was his last chance of survival and George could feel his heart beating, it now depended on his luck and even if he found a memory the chance of it saving him from the situation he was in was pretty small.
George took a deep breath and touched the table and it felt like the longest couple of second in his life.
This Table is built by a grandmaster craftsman. It’s made with high-grade gold that was mined from the underground city of Keenan.
This table was used by the ninth prince and his companions for government meetings and planning war strategies.
Do you want to activate the memory?>

Rekindle
My Newest, and at the same time, Oldest novel. This is a Rewrite of my very first novel that I begun when I was just starting out. It follows the story of Mark Floyd, a broken man who once tried to do what he thought was right... only to be stabbed in the back and thrown away. Now, pulled into a conflict that spans time and space, Mark has a choice to make; Stand up once more, even if it means facing an unknowable future, or let the Embers of his heart die and sink back into darkness. ----------------------------------- “For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity”. Once part of a Special Ops team in the US Army, Mark Floyd thought he had seen the worst that Humanity had to offer. That was until his final mission, one that would leave him a broken and shattered man, betrayed by the Country he served, and abandoned by society as a whole. His dreams filled with nightmares of the ones he failed to protect, mind and memories clouded by booze and more, Mark finds himself stumbling through life without purpose or desire. Life isn't done with Mark yet, however. For as long as even a single ember remains in a persons heart, here is still yet hope for the flames of Passion and Hope to be Rekindled. When the dying embers of Mark's heart catches the eyes of a Being far beyond his understanding, Mark finds himself thrown into a situation not even his years of training could prepare him for. Will this new chance be Mark's hope at both Redemption and Recompense? Or will it simply be the final nail in the coffin for a man already dead to the World? [This is a rework of my very first story. The general story will remain the same, however a few details have been tweaked, the chapters have be Edited better and some chapters have been broken down into smaller chunks for better flow and consistency. The biggest change will be to the System itself; It will be a lot less "Game-like", meaning no stats, levels or similar aspect, though skills will still be present in the form of "Programs". Instead, It'll focus more on the Sigil's nature as super-computers and how they change the world around them. This should make for a much more "natural" and less info-dumpy system.
