《The Parasite》Chapter 2

I made my way to my house shortly after me and Zack separated. Rusty, old, anything you'd expect from a house that was built in the 1960s. I walked into the house, set my stuff down, and sat on the old, dusty couch we owned. As I sighed, I started to scroll through my phone, mainly through Twitter.
I ended up seeing something that caught my eye. A news feed of a disappearance. Out of curiosity, I clicked the link. Two brothers had disappeared earlier this past month. Another one? I thought to myself. The disappearances were getting too frequent. Too common to be coincidences.
I heard some clutter from upstairs, and since I had nothing better to do, I placed my phone on the counter and ran upstairs. I turned toward the direction of the noise, realizing it was coming from our game room. I quickly opened the door, to find my little brother, Max, playing with some Jenga pieces scattered on the floor. "Hey, Max," I said, calmly. Max looked up at me in delight, "Oh, hi, Henry!" Max said in his usual energetic tone.
"Would you wanna go somewhere...?" I asked, out of nowhere. I decided then I needed to get my mind off the disappearances. "Oooh, sure! Where are we going?" Instantly, Max jumped up and ran over to me. "We could head to that animatronic pizza place... I think it was called Spencer's?" I offered. Max jumped with joy, I knew he loved that place with a burning passion. "Yes!" and with that, Max ran to the car, waiting patiently for me to get in. I sighed, I had to admit, I never really liked animatronics. It was just the first thought I had that came to mind, but I never liked making Max upset, so I went into the car and started to drive to Spencer's, agonizing the thought of seeing those creepy animatronics again...
I decided to suck it up as we finally drove to the pizza place, a small parlor that felt like it was in the middle of nowhere. I never understood why it was placed so far out from the city. It always felt as if they were trying to keep something inside. Max instantly jumped to his feet, he looked like a excited dog when you went on a car ride with it. Quickly, he ran inside, not even waiting for me to call him back so I could get my wallet. I let out a long sigh and grabbed my phone as I followed in pursuit. I felt my heart skip a beat as I got closer to the small, yet, big building. I didn't want Max to be disappointed that I was about to chicken out. What happened to sucking it up...? I asked myself several times. I noticed small puddles of water forming brought by the rain. I quickly brought myself back to focus and went inside.

The pizza place was bright, with red walls spreading outward followed by yellow tiling on the floor. A massive neon sign reading "Spencer's" appeared in the front of the entrance. I looked around for Max, eventually finding him in the playground they had. I let him play and decided to order a pizza, walking over to the counter. By the small dining area, several windows could be seen. I stared out into the rain, seeing nothing but the raindrops hit the window and the other things outside. All of a sudden, a thought came to me, that wolf I had seen yesterday... What was it? I don't know why I started thinking about it right then. It felt... ominous. It felt evil. And it looked at me more sinister than any other wolf I had seen. I just didn't get it. These thoughts surrounded my vision.
"Hello? May I take your order?"
I jumped at the sudden voice, and saw I had arrived at the corner. "Oh-! Uhh... hi. I would l-like to order a medium pepperoni, along with two sodas..." I stuttered, like a idiot. My mind was too focused on that wolf. "Sure! It'll be ready in around, 25 minutes!" The employee said, calmly. "Thank you..." I said, quieter than I had meant to. I walked off, sitting by a table. I sat in silence for several minutes before deciding to try and find Max again. I walked around the pizza place, seeing kids around preschool-aged riding some car rides with their parents. I looked at a dark hallway, leading to a backstage. However, before I got distracted, I saw Max playing a arcade game. I looked at him, and I didn't know what I could do afterward... Wait? Play arcade games with him?
Suddenly, a loud bang roared throughout the room, which made me jump. "The show's starting! The show's starting!" Max chanted as he instantly gave up whatever arcade game he was playing and ran to the stage area. I followed, reluctantly. Upon entering the stage area, I saw a massive animatronic beaver, dancing and singing. I shivered, but calming down as I realized I was letting my fear of animatronics get to me. I watched Spencer preform, watching Max dance and follow along to the moves the beaver was making. I felt slightly uncomfortable. Behind me was another window. I tried to convince myself not to look. I didn't know why I was so jumpy. Surely, it was just a animal that was just hungry, right?

My mind raced as I finally turned toward the window. It was too far away to completely make out, but I crept toward it. I know, it was a dumb decision. Max and the other kids hadn't noticed me sneaking away, they had been too busy dancing to Spencer's Little Song. I looked out the window, and almost jumped in fear as I saw the eyes peering at me from the woods.
Its eyes were a glowing hazel color. I still couldn't make out what the full figure looked like, but I saw a white paw sticking out. My breathing got faster as I panicked softly. I quickly backed up, too far back... I tripped over a table, knocking over a few chairs and falling to the floor with a hard thud.
A employee ran up to me, asking me if I was okay. I told them I was fine and I just got startled by some random animal. But I knew... It was the same animal from earlier. I quickly ran from the window, joining Max at the stage area. Max turned to me. "You're bleeding!" Max yelled. I hadn't realized yet, but he was right, my right elbow was bleeding. I guess I scraped it on a chair. "I'm fine." I replied. I stopped myself from looking back to that window. I didn't understand why it was seemingly following me. Maybe it was just by chance... I told myself, It probably just happened to be there at the same time I was. I sighed. Max would think I was crazy if I said I got started by a wolf. I keep trying to come up with rational solutions. I was most likely being paranoid, like Zack said I was. I didn't look back at that window, afraid of what I would see.
I stared as the beaver continued singing. Max had stopped worrying about my elbow and was singing. Before I knew it, the show was over and kids were pouring out back into the arcade. Max ran with them, I was about to follow when I saw the pizza and sodas arrive at our table.
"Max, pizzas here!" I yelled to him. Max turned back and ran over, happily. We both sat down. The pizza was cut in 4 large slices. I didn't understand why it was always cut like that here, but Max didn't complain as he gobbled his two slices. I stared at Max eating, and saw the window from the corner of my eye, but I did my best to avoid looking at it. I didn't wanna see if that wolf was still there. I shivered as all Max did was smile and continue eating the pizza and drinking his soda. "This is really good!" Max commented. "Y-Yeah... It is..." I stammered slightly. As Max finished up his pizza, he quickly ran to the arcade games to play some more Skee-Ball.
I finally looked back at the window and... no... The wolf was by the streetlight now, staring right at me. My eyes widened in pure shock and terror. I quickly ran to the arcade, deciding to join Max and his friends as I calmed myself down. This no longer felt like coincidences. I decided then and there I was ready to leave. I went to go find Max, as I felt like maybe I was behaving like a baby. What did that thing want from me? Why did it keep staring at me?
I found Max playing Skee-Ball and wiping the floor with other kids. There were no windows here, it was a secluded arcade area. I took several deep breaths. I realized if I left, I'd have to walk outside and face that thing face-to-face. That thought terrified me. But, I decided I wanted to get this over with, and I stared at Max. "Max, are you ready to go...?" I asked, nervously. Max yawned in response and trotted over to me. "Yeah, Im getting tired..." Max replied.
I hurried Max out pretty quickly. I looked at the spot where I'd seen the window. Nothing. Nothing was there. I sighed in massive amounts of relief. Max ran into the car. And I followed in pursuit. I stopped when I saw what appeared to be some form of blue goo. "What the...?" I asked myself as I stared down at it... That goo... It made me feel... uneasy... I quickly went into the car, and drove off, leaving Spencer's behind...

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
