Feng Yun watched as the hordes of beasts collided with the commander and his army. From what he could feel, most of the human side were cultivators of the Xiantian realm, and quite strong ones as well. All of them were much stronger than Feng Yun. However, even if you had the most skilled of fighters, they would pale in comparison to a horde of Xiantian realm beasts rushing you at most. This is exactly what was happening at the moment.
Snarls erupted from the mouths of the beasts as they flew into battle, one after the other. Direwolves, an evolved and mutated form of normal wolves bit down on the shoulders of the soldiers from behind, making them grit their teeth in pain. They recovered quite fast however and swung their spear in skillful movements. Their beasts ere even more savage as they chewed large beasts and spit out their disgruntled remains. Blood coated their teeth and
PUCHI!
PUCHI!
PUCHI!
The stout commander was dealing serious damage to the incoming beasts. Every time his spear moved, the end of the tip would appear at the back of a beast's head. Gore exploded into pieces and coated his iron armor. He looked like the incarnation of a devil. The stout commander leaped into the air and with a breath, launched the spear into the ground. The spear appeared like lightning descending from the heavens and completely decimated the surrounding beasts. He fell to the ground and picked up his spear. With a grim faced expression on his face, he continued to twirl the spear in movements that made it seem like a vortex that destroyed anyone who got close. Everyone watched with gleaming eyes and excitement. Feng Yun as observing the spear techniques that the stout commander was employing and secretly lamented to himself,
"Hm, he is quite skilled with the spear. However, his skill hasn't reached the level of Master. Master's ability is too powerful and tyrannical."
Thinking about it, Feng Yun remembered the terror and awe that he felt when he saw his master control the spear with his mind and deftly use it to completely overpower Cheng Xu. Dai Tian had been completely calm at that point and manipulated the spear flashes to perfection! His skill in the spear was something had been built up over thousands of years.
Looking back at the battle, it didn't seem to be good for the humans. Faced with a tyrannical amount of bloodlust and flooding beasts, there was no possible way for them to completely erase them. Even as the stout commander and his army dished out attacks that killed three or four of them at a time, compared to the entirety of the army, it was inconsequential. Hundreds more rushed in to take their place and the army began to grow tired and fatigued. It didn't look like it could hold on much longer. The stout commander, knowing this was going to happen, roared,
"Engage in the 1,000 Unified Phalanx Formation!"
The soldiers who heard him immediately retreated backwards letting their mounts, hold the beast horde off until they could organize together. The men tightly packed against each other, leaving no room for breakthrough. From their backs, the soldiers took out jade colored shields and placed them in front of them. The onlookers gasped. They had Spiritual Jadestone Shields given to the army as well? Truly powerful!

The soldiers then fitted their spears into the little gaps made by the shields pressing tight against each other in the long horizontal line of defense. The ranks behind the front vanguard tilted their spears upwards so that they wouldn't hit their fellow comrades. The stout commander organized at the front of the formation and gave a high pitched whistle. The mounts that belonged to the soldiers reacted to it and fell back to the phalanx formation, congregating at the sides, snarling at the approaching fiends. The beasts noticed this formation and didn't hesitate to come directly at it. They didn't notice anything special, as their intelligence wasn't that high. They merely wished for blood and would do anything to obtain it. As the beasts approached, the soldiers tensed up and aimed their spears.
The beasts collided with the shields, sending a tremor through the whole army. The formation however, did not budge a single bit. Rather, the soldiers roared and began to push the opposition back, causing the movement to become stifled. To increase the momentum of the retaliation, the vanguard plunged their spears into the opposing ranks, severing many of their heads. This allowed for less tension when on the defensive and for greater force pushing them back. It seemed like the beasts were gradually losing their overbearing power.
"DIE FIENDS!" The stout commander roared and sent tons of Yuan Energy coursing through the spear into the beasts. The result was internal combustion in the beasts, dealing damage to surrounding beasts who had not been hit by the spear. The stout commander threw his shield and took out a second spear from his back. Twirling both spears in his hand, he smiled evilly at the approaching onslaught. He ran forward and, while pouring Yuan Energy in his twin spears, he slashed them at the beasts in a full 360 degree turn. A tremor ran through the whole beast army, who had clearly been knocked back because of the explosions of the beasts.
The stout commander and his ranks were decimating the offensive ranks of the demonic beasts and it looked as if the battle had turned in their favor. After hours of constant slaughter, it seemed that the beast ranks had finally run out. Piercing a hole through the head of one last demonic beast, a fox, the stout commander leaned on his spear for support. He was evidently very fatigued and could not fight any longer. In fact, that was the situation for the whole entire army as well. Some of them had perished in the fight and although they had eventually one the fight, it was somewhat bitter. The army believed they had won the fight and prepared to return to the city.
Meanwhile, a few miles away, three beasts were observing the slaughter that was occurring with indifferent gazes. One of them was colored with a deep blue and had sparks running through its fur. This beast was a Howling Thunder Wolf and it laid on the floor, curled up into a ball. It opened one of its eyes and saw that the wave of beasts had been decimated. One of the other two beasts, a very large tiger, walked up to him and said,
"Sir, the first wave has been completely slaughtered. What should we do now?" The Howling Thunder Wolf smiled a bit with its white teeth and shook a bit in anticipation.
"Haha, their regular soldiers should be very exhausted. Deploy the second wave. If we press the attack, their Xiantian army cannot hold on and will have to rely on their Bloodfiends and Seekers. Once that happens, all the pieces will be set. If we kill them, then we can draw Twin Viper out of seclusion." The tiger nodded his head and said,

"This time we will take the city right sir?"
"Certainly. Once Twin Viper is dead, taking over the city should be a piece of cake." The Howling Thunder Wolf curled up once more into a ball and closed his eyes, entering a slumber. The tiger looked at him for a moment before shouting behind him. This was because there was in fact, another beast army. The first wave had already ended. The second wave was about to begin. There were even more beasts in this army than the last. They held more bloodlust and more intelligence than the previous beasts and much more combat experience. The first wave was meant to exhaust the infantry. The second wave was meant to destroy them. As soon as they heard the tiger's shout, they began to move, gradually increasing in speed.
The soldiers of the army at the time were packing up their things to return to the city when they felt an enormous pressure assault them from behind. The stout commander's eyes turned cold and a horrifying realization came to him.
"No way. There couldn't possibly be..." There it was. A large army of beasts emerging from the horizon, filled with more beasts than the previous one. They seemed much more terrifying and had too much killing intent. The lust bore down on the soldiers like a mountain. They had no time to recover from their shock as the beast army was running straight at them. This time, they weren't giving the soldiers any time to prepare. This was a full on slaughter and nothing could stop it. The crowd too was shocked. How could there be a second wave? Beasts weren't that smart at preparing wars. Very few beasts possessed the intelligence to organize a whole army. Whoever did this is so smart that they could actually rally so many troops?
"Men, quickly retreat! We can't fight against so many beasts. Leave it to the elders of the city." The stout commander shouted at the soldiers. They needed no one to tell them that they needed to run. Every single one of them clearly understood their current situation and that they could not afford to fight again. They turned and ran as fast as they could, but their decision was a bit too late. The beasts had already come very close in their moment of hesitation. Wolves and tigers pounced on the fleeing soldiers and tore their heads off with their sharp teeth. The scene was of utter horror. Gore and severed limbs littered the battlefield and only served to fuel the bloodlust that the beasts had. More and more soldiers succumbed to the onslaught of beasts. The beasts divided into many groups that worked together in order to take out the soldiers. Even if they had a lot of skill, faced with such coordination, the soldiers didn't stand a chance.
The stout commander cursed to himself and brought out his two spears once more. He had decided to stand and fight with his fellow brothers, who were currently being slaughtered by the demonic beasts. He rushed at the nearest one, severing its head with little difficulty. The stout commander surveyed his surroundings and found one of his own soldiers being assaulted by a group of six beasts. He was evidently having trouble fending them off and had already sustained heavy injuries. Blood poured out of a shoulder and chest wound. Each time his spear met the enemy's claws the soldier would cough out blood. The stout commander rushed over to protect his comrade.
Just as one of the beasts was about to launch a head blow to completely tear him apart, the stout commander leaped in, twin spears slicing forward. The spears met with the claws, completely severing the arm. Blood gushed out and the beast roared in anger and pain. The stout commander didn't stop there and tore the animal's head off with swift strike from his left spear. He then threw the spear in his right hand at another beast, a demonic crane, completely puncturing the skull and ending its life. The other beasts were shocked for a moment before launching a four pronged assault on him. The stout commander, with a grim faced expression, exerted all of his Yuan Energy into the spear.
PUCHI!
The spear met with the claws of another tiger like beast. There was struggle from the tiger as it tried to resist the overbearing Yuan Energy. Eventually, it was overcome and the spear sank in its skull. The stout commander turned to the others and threw his other spear, piercing another one's chest. He had more difficulty with the others but eventually, they were killed as well. Their carcasses littered the floor. The stout commander panted hard as he turned to face the soldier he had just saved. The soldier was terrified out of his mind. He was also filled with reverence and relief at the commander that had saved his life.
"Soldier! Go and retreat! We will leave it to the elders to handle!" The soldier needed no persuasion and ran towards the gates. The stout commander sighed in exhaustion as soon as the soldier was a long way from him.
"I must go as well. But first I should save the----" His words ere interrupted by the sharp pain he felt in his chest. His eyes were wide and blood was pouring out of his chest. He turned his head and saw a leopard like creature behind him, its claw piercing the stout commander's chest. Blood splattered everywhere and his organs could be seen. The leopard had gore coating its mouth and most of its body was ripped away. The stout commander must have overlooked one of the creatures he thought he had killed. The creature had found a weak spot in the stout commander's body and attacked it. Sure enough, the commander had been dealt a fatal injury. With a a roar of anger, the stout commander pulled the claw out of his chest and ripped it away from the leopard's body. He slapped the leopard's head and it ceased to exist. Even though the creature was dead however, the damage had been done.
The stout commander collapsed to the grass, blood relentlessly pouring out of the wound. The red substance leaked out of his mouth. His eyes had already grown dim and he had resigned himself to the release of death. Rolling onto his back, the stout commander muttered to himself,
"These beasts came at us with startling intelligence and power, not to mention their numbers. Even the elders...*cough of blood*...may find it difficult to repel an assault like this."" The stout commander's eyelids closed and a scent of death leaked out from his body.

Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
