For an entire twenty-four hours, Feng Yun was immobile and unable to defend himself in the slightest. However, with the preparation he had done beforehand, there was very little danger.
Number one, he had placed himself in an inconspicuous environment such that no intelligent beast would notice that it was man-made.
Number two, he had applied an ointment that masked his scent all over most of his body to cover up the stench of blood and his flesh.
With those factors, he was able to survive the entire day without having to worry about snooping beasts. The day progressed and night passed by. Soon, the hour at which he would awaken came.
A beast came into the clearing that he was located in, its body calmly walking around while grazing. It hadn't even noticed the rock formation that had hid a young boy. The beast was a large boar, two firm ivory tusks sticking out of its nose and a powerful muscular body that could mow down a predator. In its eyes was a cautious glow that it had developed after years of surviving in the forest. Just this once the boar let its guard down because it had sensed that there was no one following it.
The boar continued grazing for a while before deciding that it wanted to rest and digest its food. The boar looked around and saw a rock formation that looked like it could hold its full body. The boar walked over and rested its body against the boulder. Just as it did so, a slight shudder could be felt from the rock's interior. Curious, the boar widened its eyes and listened closely.
The shudders gradually became violent and made resting on the boulder nearly impossible for the boar. It quickly rose to its feet in an instant, its killing intent flaring and its senses peaked. The boar stood facing opposite the shaking boulder, its posture arranged into a charging position. It waited restlessly for the cause to identify itself.
Suddenly, the top of the rock formation burst apart as a fist broke through and stuck itself in the air. The boar stared at the hand in surprise. That was because the hand resembled that of a human. The hand was covered in soft and jade like skin with some gravel from the rock. Soon, the rocks began shaking once more and the rest of the human broke through the boulder ceiling.
Feng Yun stood there on top of the rock, staring at the sky in contemplation. He looked at his body, and saw the large amount of gravel and sand falling from his clothes. Then, he stared at the boar, which contemplated his existence to be worth killing or not. Feng Yun looked away, not even paying any attention to the boar.

"Hmm, looks like the backlash time is up. I should be able to move at my normal speed now."
Feng Yun stretched his arms and legs and smiled to himself when he saw that his body was recovering from the period of immobility. However, he still felt slightly stiff. Looking at the boar, he had a sudden idea.
"Hmm, this boar should be good for getting rid of my stiffness. Plus, I'm hungry. I want pork for breakfast!"
Feng Yun stared at the pig with hungry eyes filled with bloodlust. The boar instantly felt a small fear crawling up its skin. The stare that Feng Yun was giving it was one filled with hunger. Finally, it could handle the urge no longer and charged forward, attempting to spear Feng Yun through the chest.
"Thanks for the meal!"
Feng Yun summoned his sword and waited for the boar to approach him. Then, when it was only a few feet away, he unleashed a flurry of attacks. His sword danced at a speed that his opponent couldn't comprehend and thus the boar became easily confused. The charge that had started out extremely terrifying now seemed somewhat trivial compared to the magnitude of Feng Yun's strength.
When the boar had stopped its charge, Feng Yun chose that moment to act. His body instantly became illusory and his sword nearly invisible. The boar stopped charging and looked around for Feng Yun's figure. It could not kill him when it couldn't see him.
"Right next to you!"
Feng Yun's voice appeared approximately a foot away from the boar and it tried to look towards him but was already too late. Feng Yun waved the Overlord Heaven Piercer at the boar's body, making a clean cut at its neck.
SCHIIIICK!
A small spurt of blood flew out of the boar's neck as it's eyes rolled back into into its sockets and its body collapsed, the blood no longer pumping through its veins. Feng Yun landed on the ground and walked forward to harvest the meat, heart and soul from the beast. He nodded with satisfaction when he saw the corpse. It was a clean kill, one he would be proud of.
When you killed the beast, you didn't want to mess up the meat. Preferably, an incision at the neck would do the trick and then you could harvest the meat without messiness. That was a rule for hunting that Feng Yun had set for himself. Only if absolutely necessary would be have to make things messy.
The soul flew into the Void Universal Manual when he summoned it and he placed the heart into his storage. As for the meat, Feng Yun skinned it and cut apart the meat into squares. Then, with little effort, he started a fire and began to roast the meat. He wasn't afraid that the fire would attract beasts. This was a fairly secluded area and most beasts wouldn't travel here. There wasn't enough meat. In addition, Feng Yun's strength had risen exponentially since he had first entered the forest. Most of the beasts here could be easily handled by him. After all, his strength rivaled that of a Xiantian Realm 8th Layer cultivator.

After a while, the meat had finished roasting and Feng Yun had begun to devour the food hungrily. Normally, cultivators could go several weeks to even months without food, but some enjoyed it as a delicacy and simple pleasure. Feng Yun for some reason felt very hungry and wanted to gobble up as much food as possible.
In the span of a few short minutes, all of the meat from the boar was finished and digested in his stomach. The boar's body was incredibly large so it was a wonder how he could finish it so fast.
"Ah, that was quite satisfying. Now, I should go back to harvesting more beast hearts. I still require some more before fulfilling Master's requirement."
Feng Yun looked in the direction of the inner valley, and then remembered what had happened the last time he went there. There was no beasts there, only a beast.
"I imagine that if I go there again, that fellow certainly won't spare me," Feng Yun lamented. Indeed, he had thoroughly enraged the Cave Lion in their last encounter. Furthermore, it had a greedy heart. Even if it wasn't mad at Feng Yun, it would still want to collect his Falling Heavens Wings.
'There's no need for me to get myself killed by going there. I will stay here on the outside and kill until I have met the requirement.'
Feng Yun resolved himself to follow this rule and stomped his foot over the fire, eradicating it completely. Then, he walked off towards the areas where the amount of beasts were most densest.
In the last month of the challenge, Feng Yun worked especially hard in order to refine his techniques and skill and even advanced in cultivation thanks to the Universal Bindings Technique. Furthermore, he had long fulfilled the requirement for three-hundred beast hearts and the hearts were all stored in a interspatial bag. During the time of the last month, he expanded his killing intent, causing his aura to become that of a great demonic being and whenever beasts came into contact with him, they would feel the pressure of the amount of people and beasts that he had killed.
There was no doubt about it that Feng Yun had experienced a great improvement by living in the Violet Slaughter Valley. Without the harsh environment, perhaps his progress may have been somewhat slower. He was ruthless to his foes and none could stand in his way. Blood became one of the most common things he saw after living in the valley for so long.
Now, Feng Yun walked towards the meeting location where Bei Luo would pick him up. His expression was that of great tranquility despite walking so openly in the violet grass. Any beast could see him if he was strolling like that. Unless the beasts were stupid, anyone could recognize his figure. However, it wasn't that the beasts were stupid, it was just that Feng Yun was too strong. None of them were even willing to bar his path.
Soon, he reached the base of the mountain where Bei Luo had dropped him off and sat silently on the branch of a tree, his body circulating the Universal Binding Technique. He felt at peace when he was surrounded by the several planets of the universe. It had a magical and calming effect upon the user that would make them enter a meditative Nirvana-like state where they would be impervious to external distractions and sounds. Feng Yun had entered that state while sleeping on the tree branch.
Just a few minutes after Feng Yun sat, a gust of wind shook the ground and a great pressure descended upon the earth. Bei Luo's ape like figure found its way to the ground and stood there, surveying his surroundings.
"Hmm, Junior Apprentice Brother, where are you? Did you finish the challenge?"
He then looked up and saw Feng Yun's handsome figure frivolously loitering about, his sleep clearly not disturbed by Bei Luo's powerful entrance. Bei Luo stared with interest as he witnessed Feng Yun's body emanate a type of holy glow that would normally never be found in another person's body.
"Wow, Junior Apprentice Brother seems to have entered an incredibly profound state. What powerful cultivation technique does he practice to be able to do this?"
Feng Yun continued like this for another few hours, and as time passed, his aura became increasingly stable. Soon, he opened his beautiful pupils and saw Bei Luo on the ground staring at him with a smile on his face.
"You've woken up, Junior Apprentice Brother. Was your stay at the Violet Slaughter Valley satisfactory?" Bei Luo joked around but he was surprised to hear Feng Yun's earnest approval.
"It was incredibly satisfactory. I gained much from this challenge that Master gave me!" As he said this, he released over fifty percent of his killing intent into the air, the energy so powerful that it could make the leaves in the violet trees wither.
"WHAT?!" Bei Luo stared, agape with shock as he processed the magnitude of the killing intent in his brain.
'So much killing intent! I dare say that it surpasses my own. Just how many beings did he actually slay?'
"Junior Apprentice Brother, your power has truly grown to unimaginable heights. I, your Elder Brother, am very proud. Seeing this power of yours, you should have completed the challenge correct?"
Feng Yun nodded his head with confirmation and took out his gigantic bag of hearts. Bei Luo stared in shock for a moment before resuming his calm appearance.
"Haha, I knew you could do it. Uncle Dai will definitely be pleased with your progress. Come come come, I shall bring you to him immediately." Bei Luo laughed and grabbed a hold of Feng Yun's hand. Then, he grasped it tight and shot off into the air with him in tow. They both traveled back towards the Black Death Palace...where Feng Yun's Master would be waiting.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
