《Flight of the Princess Sage [hiatus]》Ch 9 A Witch's Game Pt 1

“Lavenna? Are you still sleeping? It’s been six days already, I think you should wake up.”
I can hear someone speaking. I’m still a bit drowsy, though it by no means is strange as I had a habit of sleeping for entire centuries on end in my previous life. I mean I had to use the time I had on my hands somehow, right?
Well, it’s a new life and I don’t have the luxury of time here, not now at least, so what I’m being said to by, presumably, mother does make sense. I still have to make some more insect-repellents tools to protect us against deities that should be coming knocking on our door anytime already. Haaa, I don’t wanna. Let me bury myself inside this warm blanket until the problem goes away, will you?
Haaa, of course such a way of dealing with problems is something I could do only if I were alone. Guess I have no other choice but to rise.
“Good. You finally woke up! I was getting worried a little!”
Mother patted my head. It feels nice. Though she has always been quite a worrywart and it’s strange how normally she’s treating me sleeping for such a long time.
“Are you alright with me sleeping for so long?”
“Hm? Oh, I got it, there’s nothing strange with sleeping for so long. Even I’ve done it a few times. I mean I had to use the time I had on my hands somehow, right?”
Somehow what she just said sounds a bit strange to me. Whatever. Immortals aren’t very original with their ways of spending time, huh? It’s actually kinda funny how there’re mortals who sometimes mistake an immortal that’s taking a nap with an evil monster that’s sealed. Happened a few times to me too. Let’s not talk about the consequences of them waking me up and getting on my nerves. Really, let’s not.
“Anyway, sorry for sleeping too much! I haven’t made anything for you now, have I?”
“For me? I’m afraid I’ll have to trouble you then”, she really looked apologetic “I can’t take on a god on my own yet but I can’t allow you to take risks alone!”

“You misunderstand. I was planning on making defensive tools for you. Of course I won’t let you fight a deity. That would be suicidal for you.”
“But-”
I fly up a bit and grasp mother’s shoulders. Even with my childish hands they don’t seem to be large at all. I try to appease her by throwing a barrage of promises and excuses on her.
“You don’t have to worry. Trust me, in my previous life I’ve had my share of troubles and this situation we have here? It doesn’t even get into top ten thousand! I know you don’t want to leave it all to me but this one time, isn’t it fine? After all is set and done I promise I will teach you witchcraft and won’t leave you out anymore.”
Mother looks dejected. I’ve come to understand that she wants me to depend on her and, honestly, I’m happy that she feels that way, but it does hurt to make her stand down when she so obviously wants to help me. But she’s too important to me to risk her and I can’t help but hurt her a little this one time.
“Do you promise?”
“Of course! But do not forget that you promised to teach me this world’s magic too! It really makes no sense, honestly. Let’s eat first though, I don’t think I need to now, but it will let me clear up my mind a bit and it’s become a bit of a routine now.”
“Yes, let’s go!”
I will, of course, teach her my ways of witchcraft. Life is not as peaceful as I wish it to be and as a high witch, there always will be people looking to take advantage of my weaknesses. So, whenever I find one, I try my best to improve it. How I want to just live a life of peace and quiet, with mother and Stella and maybe a few close friends coming by occasionally. I wanted to take this world over and use it as my own little safe-haven but I don’t think it’s a good idea now. There’re too many uncertainties with this world and I have yet to see a trace of any half-good magic and it led me to some scary conclusions I have yet to prove or disprove. But if they are true I’m sure that nothing good will come out of messing with this place in the long run and alarming things I wouldn’t dare to. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, now I have some other matters to attend to.

It took me a lot more time than before, two months to be precise, refining the defensive tool for mom, mostly because the handy thing is a design I myself have relied on in my early days when I was still (relatively) young and vulnerable. It has undergone many revisions, so it’s very complex, but with it, I’m sure mother will be fine even if the enemies will start dropping stars on her. Well, maybe not to such an extent as she still doesn’t know how to properly use it, but a high-level god or twenty will pose absolutely no problem to her now.
The tool is made of two parts: an earring and a little ring. The earring is the most complicated as it can stealthily analyze the environment and detect any changes in it and accordingly protect the owner from most attacks. It’s also hard to find as I’ve placed multiple stealth formations on it to make most people ignore it.
In order to make it I had to turn a few metal ingots into extra-thin plates where I carved the needed parts of formations, then I had to combine them and connect the parts scattered on multiple plates and then melt it, while preserving the upgraded veins.
If it sounds hard, it isn’t. I’ve done this millions of times, literally, so the earring is something I could make in my sleep.
As for the ring, well, if the earring fails to protect mom somehow, the ring will let her escape and notify me. Though by the time I had made the final upgrades for the ring’s special properties I didn’t really need it, I still thought it would be a shame not to have it undergo some manipulations by Stella, as she’s so much better at space magic than me. And the space properties of the ring allowed me to use a huge amount of materials on it, despise its size.
Anyway, I still consider it to be a single tool as both the parts cooperate with each other and combined they produce quite a few of effects.
Even in my previous world this tool is legendary. Among normal immortals that is, a good witch will just find it neat but still.
As I’ve said before, I’m not too much into giving my tools and techniques names and by the time I met Stella I had been using it for a while, so I just referred to the individual parts as “the earring” and “the ring”.
I then taught mother how to use them, which took another month and then we were ready for whatever there was to come.
By the way I have incorporated the God’s Asylum into the useless magic-sealing bracelet mother gave me two years ago. And I know why it doesn’t work on me now.
It turns out that the bracelet was supposed to influence my thought against using magic and hinder my ability to memorize spells. As if it would work on me. But it’s also probably the best way to avoid a child with playing with supernatural forces I suppose.
And you are now probably wondering why no gods have shown up during this time? Well, it’s simple. They are just slow. They are used to thinking in years the way mortals would think of days, so they are just slow. That bulky fella that attacked us on the mountain probably caught wind of me recovering my soul a few weeks prior and didn’t do any preparations and just attacked us. And that could be thought of as hasty.
Anyway, once they targeted us, they wouldn’t let us go and when my soul will recover completely I will be far too busy to care for a few children demanding attention, so I will have fun take care of my problems while I can.

The Rules of Dungeoneering
The First Rule of Dungeoneering: This will kill you Sylvester Bayes, the 4th son of a small baron, has suddenly had his head filled with the memories and work of someone who had dedicated their life to memorizing every dungeon they could find and designing a new RPG system. Not about to waste these gifts, Sylvester quickly sets out to get rich quick and discover the reasons behind his sudden knowledge. (Please note, this is dressed up actual play from my testing of a tabletop RPG. It is actually how the game has gone and there is a very real chance that anyone, including Sylvester, could die in any encounter. To help make my job easier I am using dungeons written by other people, which is why I have listed this as a fanfiction. I put links to all of them in the chapters where they are relevant.)
