《Deathlord Eugene》Chapter 4: Help, My Leveling-System Hates me!

[Congratulations, you have leveled up!]
I think I lost too much blood. I’m starting to see things; acting like this is some videogame to ease the pain. Man, if I had to die in such a fantastic way, at least I would’ve preferred to die in a cooler, more heroic way.
[Congratulations, you have leveled up!]
In the arms of a beautiful princess, maybe, as I sacrifice my life to save hers. Or perhaps during a brutal and hopeless battle, facing dozens of enemies at once. Knowing I’ll succumb to them eventually but persevering still.
[Congratulations, you have leveled up!]
I suppose things rarely turn out the way we expect them to. I might have lived my whole life on the sidelines, but I feel like I did pretty well this time. If I had another chance, I’d make sure not to waste it this time…
[Look over here, you dipshit, you leveled up! Now stop being so dramatic, for fucks sake!]
I take a moment to actually look at this… floating notification in front of me. It’s floating in the center of my vision. No matter where I turn to look, it always seems to be right in front of me.
[Congratulations, you have leveled up! Your wounds are healed, and you’ve unlocked POTENTIAL!]
I look down at my body, inspecting it for scratches and wounds. Other than my horribly shredded clothes, I appear to be in perfect condition, like this fight never happened in the first place.
What the hell is potential? This just seems like one of those cliche stories, where a hopeless loser gets transported into another world save it. Oh god, am I the hopeless loser?
[Of course, you are! I mean, have you looked at yourself? PATHETIC! You almost lost to a goblin, a fucking feral goblin!]

What the hell? I don’t remember seeing any stories about the protagonist getting rinsed by the system like this. What the hell is your problem?
[POTENTIAL is your capacity to absorb the essence of the world. By ingesting food, enemies, elements, or concepts, you gain passive or active skills or stats to become stronger and survive!]
Who the hell does it think it is, ignoring me like that. It’s lucky it doesn’t have a physical form; otherwise, I would give it a good walloping to teach it a lesson.
[Oh please, a coward like you wouldn’t be able to fight a paper towel in a bathtub, let alone someone as incredible as me! Who takes a shit in an unknown cave, in front of a feral creature?]
I can feel my face heating up, knowing it had a point. “Look, it was an emergency. I’ve been holding it in all day.” I stutter out loud.
[Don’t talk out loud. More creatures might show up and actually finish you off this time. Head back out through the gate. You should be safe at home for the time being.]
What? after all this trouble of getting to this horrendous cave, you’re sending me home already? I thought this whole leveling thing meant I’m supposed to become a badass, destroying monsters left and right!
[So did I, but no one expected you to be this bad at the whole monster-killing thing. For now, head back before you bite off more than you can chew. I’ll explain the leveling system after we get some rest. Looking after your dumb ass is exhausting.]
Man, fuck off! I almost died. I don’t need this snark. I wait a few seconds after my thought, but the system doesn’t seem to reply. Deciding it’s best to listen for the time being and put my pants back on. My backpack’s content spilled out on the cold hard floor during the fight. Not wanting to waste precious groceries. I pick everything up and put it into my bag before heading back into the ominous portal.

Once it did its unsettling teleportation back into my bathroom, I could feel the fatigue that had been building up all day. I really need a rest. My healed but worn-out body slowly makes its way into my bedroom to succumb to sleep.
“Thank god it’s the weekend. There’s no way I’m going to the office after a night like this,” I mumble to myself as sleep quickly sets in.

The Dark Lord's Home for Undead Heroes
Julian Crane seldom cared for anything but his magic and research. When the gods decided to damn him out of the blue, naming him Dark Lord and painting him as a Villain in the eyes of mankind, he moved on with his life, caring nothing about their scrutiny. But their ways are ineffable, and when they start sending Heroes — mere children — to throw their lives against him, he vows to make them pay — one undead Hero at a time. *** Updates schedule: Tuesday-Friday-Sunday The average chapter is between 2-2.5k words. Song of the Depths
Book 1: Complete, in process of posting.Book 2: 50% complete, will schedule chapters when complete. Part of the Cycles of Imbalance universe. Will contain an alternative relationship dynamic (reverse harem, might be some MM and FF. No cheating, no NTR.) To the Creshe Empire, I’m just a number. I’ve spent the past five years in isolation and under study. With my home razed by a Syldrari attack, my mind damaged, and nothing but white walls and a viewing window around me, I dedicated myself to two things: training my body, and reading any book they allowed me to have. The Empire wants me to serve, to use the inhuman power the Incident stirred within me. Technically, they asked, but it wasn’t much of a choice. It never is. Serve, or… I refused to be a mindless slave. My life was taken from me once. Never again. With the Empire moving forward with their xenophobic plans, they needed someone capable of killing Syldrari—and I was just that. A tool they could use, a tool they thought they could manipulate. Needing me was their first mistake. They gave me leverage, I named my terms. Now, after five years, my life can begin.

Of Gods and Dungeons
March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.

Doctor // Kidnapped Dreamnotfound AU
Why would anyone bother going to the hospital when they have an injury when you can just kidnap your own personal doctor?Dream. A serial killer who often gets into some messy situations with rivals. Those messy situations tend to leave Dream battered, bruised, and shot. He's not the best doctor, but he knows who is. George. A doctor in training at the hospital that he's had his eye on for more time than he'd like to admit.More explanation: Dream's a serial killer & kidnapper who normally works alone. However he does occasionally work with his friends, one of those friends being Sapnap, but we'll get into all of those people later. Dream isn't good at treating bullet wounds or cuts, despite having to do so quite often. So he does something that he IS good at. Kidnapping. Only this time instead of playing mind games with his captive and killing them after, he's going to be kidnapping someone who can help him whenever he gets hurt, which unluckily for the both of them, will be pretty often. Despite George technically still being in training as a doctor, Dream wouldn't dream of passing up an opportunity to not only gain the much needed help in treating his wounds, but also a very pretty boy that would be under his control.TW's! I will explain everything about TW's in the first chapter as well as other stuff in the first chapter.Updates: Once a week. I kind of just update whenever I want though. The reason being for this is because I have actually written a book in the past and I've found that if I have much more time to write the chapters, they tend to be much higher quality and longer. Which means a better reading experience for you guys as well as a better writing experience for myself.I started writing this at like 3am and didn't account for the fact that I have like- no idea how to treat wounds (overall) but uh- too late now I guess...Cover art by wanderlustlily on tumblr
