《A Different Kind of Hero (-)》Chapter 17: The Issue With The Quest

~Lorne~
We both exited the town and started walking to the east as Lazlo had pointed. The time we spent walking was in silence. At least between the two of us.
My thought process worried me a bit. I hated humans, sure. I could kill them and enjoy it. That was fucked up, but understandable to some extent.
However, being annoyed of someone being happy that their friends could be avenged? Not understanding why the person cared? I mean, they are dead now. You can't bring them back. No amount of mourning will do anything. These kinds of thoughts were bizarre.
Our walk lasted a while, and we eventually came across the rocks/boulders that we were told about. Along the way we had only seen low ranked monsters. Nothing special. F and E. A D here and there, but otherwise very calm. It was quite unbelievable that there was a Basilisk somewhere here. We went in further.
I decided to activate [Perception] and help look for it. I expanded it out as far as I could, and i could feel the presence of everything within 100 meters (Changed Perception from 20m -> 100m). It was overwhelming at first, since I was in a forest, but after a few seconds I got used to it somewhat.
Most of what I could feel was very small. They were the small animals that were just about everywhere. However, just at the border of my reach I felt something rather large. I took a few steps towards its direction to get a better sense, but what greeted me was what seemed to be 4 humanoids.
I couldn't tell between demons, beast-kin, and humans, so I could only tell that it was something that felt like a person.
"People up ahead. Get ready if they try anything. I'll go up, but stay behind me and out of sight."
I warned Morgan in a whisper, and she nodded silently.
I activated [Hide Presence] and moved forward. I didn't have any hiding skills, but as long as I stayed out of their line of sight they wouldn't be able to know I was there.
I kept [Perception] on as well, but I lowered it to around 30 meters. I got close to them, and turned on my [Hearing] skill.
"The Basilisk is somewhere over here. I can feel it's presence. Looks like it wasn't a joke when Sal told us there was one." (Mage)
They were all humans, and the one to speak first from what I had seen was the mage of the group. He wore a rather flashy robe. It was a light blue with dark blue engravings, and it looked to have metal designs similar to my clothes. The man had a typical wizard hat as well, but instead of being an old man he was very young. Most likely mid-twenties.
Next to him was a warrior, then a priest. The they both had flashy armor as well, but the warrior looked the most expensive. He seemed to be a higher level than the others.
I used [Identification] on each of them.
It turns out that the priest, mage, and not mentioned archer were all SS class adventurers. The warrior was an SSS and over level 400. Humans sure had to level hard to get strong. It seems as though he is accompanying them out of a mutual bond.
A brief thought popped in my head. 'It would be pretty funny to see their friends get mutilated...' I shook that thought off. The idea seemed like it was calling out to me. Asking me to do it. However, I restrained myself. It was hard, but I somehow pulled it off and didn't rush in there.

"Alright guys, it should be up ahead. Get ready. You should be able to handle it, and I'm here as backup, but you guys should be fine. Remember to finish it quickly. This is your rank up quest after all!" (Warrior)
Upon hearing this, I moved over to Morgan and told her that they were going to kill the Basilisk. She seemed to understand that we didn't want this to happen, but she wasn't ready for what I told her next.
"I'll be going to have a quick chat with them. Stay on the sidelines in case of anything unexpected."
She didn't understand why I would do that, but I didn't explain and began to turn off everything and walk towards them.
"Something just appeared behind us!" (Mage)
Upon hearing this, all the party members turned to face me. Their faces went from battle-ready to disgusted.
"Ugh" (Archer)
The archer was the first of the group to respond.
"Listen here demon, get out of here or we'll have trouble." (Warrior)
How right he was. Trouble indeed
"Yes, yes. We will be having trouble."
Upon saying that, I let my tail loose and let it wave around in the air. I walked towards them, and they took a step back and got ready. The mage began chanting a spell, and the priest applied buffs. The archer readied her bow.
"Don't take another step or you'll regret it you fucking trash!" (Warrior)
Hehe~ Trash?
"I don't think I'll regret it."
After saying that, I took a step forward. I saw them all begin to fire. The priest fired some holy ball of energy, the archer an empowered arrow, the wizard some kind of ice spell, and the warrior charged.
This was however all in slow motion for me. They were much too slow. How foolish they were. In the blink of an eye to them, but several seconds for me, I took out my Scythe of Death and bolted forward, cutting the stomach of the warrior open. His armor didn't help whatsoever, and was cleanly cut through.
When I cut the warrior, the spells all hit me. They did a bit of damage, but they felt more like the friction of rubbing your hands together as little patches where I was hit. The smoke began to clear, but not before a loud screaming was heard.
"AAAARGHHH" (Warrior)
Once his companions could see standing without so much as a scratch, and their friend incapacitated, they all felt despair. However, before their emotions could change, an immense fear hit them. A fear worse than getting stuck by truck-san in cheesy light novels.
This was obviously caused by the Scythe of Death, but I didn't feel any emotion for them. If anything, I felt joy for inflicting pain on them. In a way, it felt normal. As though this was the way I was meant to exist. As a Harbinger of Death. Someone who's role was simply put: death.
Race didn't matter. Only the action of dying. I had unknowingly become a huge sadist, and I hadn't known it.
The girl archer pissed herself and the two guys did as well. The warrior was in so much pain that he didn't know what to do with himself. His screaming was beginning to get annoying.
"Shut up"
I stared at him with cold eyes. My eyes glowed and I used [Devil's Stare]. This might give him a heart attack, but that didn't matter to me.
He stopped screaming, and seemingly lost control of his ability to move. He was still alive, which annoyed me a tad, but that wouldn't last long.

I took my scythe, and split open his chest. I moved the armor with my hands and bent it backwards. The adventurers could not move after seeing this while coupled with the effects of the Scythe of Death.
I watched as the Scythe Seemingly cut something. It was a light blue aura of some sort. I pondered for a moment what it was but then came to the conclusion that it must have been his soul.
Level Up
After seeing it, then ripping it apart, I looked at the adventurers. I could see similar blue lights near their upper chest area. It seems as though I could see souls now.
A smile slowly crept up on my face, and the female died on the spot. Cause: Heart Attack.
How inconvenient. I dashed up to the priest and cut him in half, cutting his soul in half as well.
Now, only the mage remained. I walked up to him slowly, and tapped my scythe on the ground 3 times to scare him further. Before he had the chance to have a heart attack, his soul was gone as well...
Level Up
-----------------
I was now covered in blood, and there was a weight in my chest. It was very heavy, and it caused me to kneel. Upon seeing this, Morgan jumped out from the nearby forestry and came to my aid somewhat.
She got close to me, but remained a certain distance away. I wasn't sure why, but after I was able to focus on myself I understood.
Around my chest area where the weight was, was a dark mass. It was similar in appearance to smoke, but it was more dense and was spiritual. I did not know what it was, but before I could do anything it seemingly dissipated into the area around.
A few moments went by before I stood up. Morgan walked over to me with a very worried and concerned face that showed a bit of fear.
"What... What happened to you during that fight? You went haywire.." (Morgan)
I honestly didn't know. I began the fight and I just couldn't control myself anymore. All I wanted was death, and only after destroying their souls did I feel better.
"I don't know.."
Nothing else was said. All that happened was Morgan walking over to me and hugging me. No words were exchanged since it was unnecessary. I hated humans and wanted to kill them, but enjoying it that much and feeling satisfaction from ripping apart their souls was a 'bit' much.
While we were having a moment, an uninvited guest decided to appear. The Basilisk just walked on over. It saw us, and hissed, and the first to move was Morgan surprisingly. She jumped towards the Basilisk and kicked its head. It fell over, and before it could recover she hit it with a [Dragon's Breath].
I watched its soul dimmer and then dissipate. I had the urge to destroy/collect it, but it wasn't too strong and I kept it down.
"I think it's time for us to head back."
I walked over, pulled out my scythe and decapitated it. I then grabbed the head in my right hand after putting away the scythe. I then teleported back to the city alongside Morgan.
I teleported near Lazlo's house, and then went to his door and knocked. We received a lot of attention. Especially me being covered in blood with a giant Basilisk's head in my hand.
After a few seconds, Lazlo opened the door and his face became overjoyed. We were paid even more than what was offered, and we decided to head back to the Gorghen to have the quest put in as complete.
"Let's get it over with." (Morgan)
Morgan sulked a bit since she thought we would be jumping there, but I told her otherwise.
"We'll teleport."
Her eyes widened, and before she could say anything we arrived in the guild. I still had the head of the Basilisk with me, and we basically scared the living shit out of Tammy. She jumped up and screamed loudly in shock, resulting in Linzy barging in to see what happened.
I lost the strength in my legs at her reaction and started laughing my ass off. My attitude definitely improved after that incident, but I knew that this was only the beginning, and there would be a lot more to come.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
