《Humanity's End》Chapter 7.2

“Sir, if whatever comes through that portal has long ranged capabilities, you will be put at risk sir.” Cranton said, his voice stern.
“Oh, come on Cranton. Don’t you want to see the activation with your own two eyes?” John smiled at his head of intelligence before looking back through the binoculars. He was on the outside observation post of his command deck. The snipers and spotters, who had taken up several vantage points along the deck, gave him uneasy looks as he stepped over them to get a better view.
“Sir, I really must insist . . .” John ignored the Jr. officer.
Not that Major is Jr. too much, but it is Jr. to a General. Perks of rank, John thought as he put the binoculars to his eyes and the blue sky-beam came into perfect vision. It was beautiful, and had always seemed to pull John in whenever he got to see the thing with his own eyes. The energy fluctuated blue and white, and shot off into the sky. According to intelligence reports he had read, they reached to the edge of Low Earth Orbit, and just seemed to stop. A literal pillar of light.
One minute until Earth System Integration: level 1 is complete. Be warned, as appointed Lord of a region that contains a Connection Pillar, Invasion is a distinct possibility. If this happens, you will be given a 10 minute warning.
Huh, I guess we all just kind of assumed. Why wasn’t I told about this earlier? And what does Lord mean? Thought I was a governor. John thought to himself as he growled, looking at his watch which told him he had only 30 seconds left. The System responded.
Lords attached to your faction, The United States Federal Government, were not informed because the leaders of the United States Federal Government chose a Restriction. This Restriction permitted them additional resources and access to critical information. Restriction Imposed: Limited Information Sharing, System Imposed Limited Communication Through System Processes. Vulnerability to mundane communications, providing a 0.15% chance that intercepted mundane communications will be automatically decoded by the system for your adversaries and rivals. Additionally, 1% chance of automatic interception of mundane communications by your adversaries and rivals. You are a Lord, an appointed leader of a faction on Earth, vying for total supremacy of the planet.

“Makes sense I suppose. That must be why those jokers tried not to use our normal lines of communication, and relied so heavily on System integrated tech. He couldn’t tell me because of the damn System itself. He did leave hints, though. A lot of them.”
Level 1 System Integration Complete! Welcome to the Universal Community Earthlings!

A Nerd's Wet Dream Come True (Tossing an OC into Marvel) V2.
Andrew William. A perfectly average boring name for a perfectly average and boring boy. He wasn't particularly smart nor gifted. Not in academics nor in sports. He wasn't even as good as the other losers and "nerds" in his school. He could not remember the expansive lore of Star Wars, he could not recite the dialogue of Startek nor pull off any cool one-liners and quotes, and he couldn't beat the final level in most games without resorting to cheating or mods. All he had was half-assed knowledge of pop culture and comics, but the one thing he was good at, his one and only pride and calling in life? Making Youtube videos. No, it wasn't sad! He was actually quite popular, honest! He made videos of adventure and nature, although it was mostly of the creepy variety. Abandoned hospitals, old mines, long tunnels, and undiscovered caverns. And as ironic as it was predictable, it would, of course, turn out to be the reason that he died. Well, at least he could take comfort in dying doing what he loved, not many people these days could say the same, you know? The concept comforted him at least, but it turns out death is not always as permanent as people liked to think, because Andrew somehow found himself in New York City of all places after falling to his certain death in the Devil's hole, Death Valley Nevada., only thing was it certainly wasn't the New York that he knew of. The Fantastic Four? Stark Industry? Captain America's biography? Oh boy, and did he mention he's no longer human? His Asian friends had introduced him to the wonders of Isekai novels and mangas, but isn't the order a little messed up? Where's his meeting with the sexy and nice Goddess? Where was his intro or tutorial?? Explanation plz I'm a noob at cross-dimensional travel! Help? Setting? Menu? Status? May I please get to pick my own cheat power? No? I'm stuck as a virus? Well, At least the Prototype Virus was pretty darn cool and OP. Just not as op as being able to casually break the sound barrier in my sneakers or bench pressing the earth, but I'll just have to make do. Please don't be some fucked up Marvel continuity where Nazis and Hydra won or some shit. Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore

Delicate as Glass
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Nuri, an [Assistant Glassworker], only has a single Skill. It’s really not fair. He’s worked in the hot shop his entire life, following in his father’s footsteps after his parents passed away, but he’s stuck. Despite possessing above-average talent as an artisan, he still hasn’t shed his [Assistant] status, gained a second Skill, or even leveled enough to reach the first Threshold. Besides, he’s bored; most days he daydreams of adventure and becoming a hero, or pines for the renown that’s sure to be his if he evolves his Class into a [Master Glass Smith], but nothing ever changes—until suddenly, fate strikes, and nothing is ever the same again. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
