《Humanity's End》Chapter 13: The Fight Outside The Walls

Isaka ran her fingers over the rifle again, down the wood grain and onto the cold metal barrel. The sounds of her people in the shelter at the heart of the Magical Academy in her small town filled the large basement level, echoing off the bare concrete walls.
“So Ms. Smith, how are you holding up?” Major Dawson asked as he came up next to her and her small group of volunteer militia.
“Doing just fine, thank you Major. I’d feel better if we had Jessica back though.” The young woman had become an integral part of Isaka’s leadership team. She focused on training those whose use of mana could prove dangerous. She was also extremely useful as an example to the other teachers, professors, and scholars who kept bugging Isaka about the smallest things as Jessica usually just dealt with the issue at hand rather than finding her and passing the decision making off to Isaka.
“I agree. Lt. Brown’s acumine with magic is almost without equal. Her being taken to the front lines has left us” the major looked around the bunker. His gaze moved around the basement bunker, landing on the small clump of Jessica’s students. “Somewhat lacking in that department. But don’t worry. We have security here and at the fire base locked down tight. A squad to each building's security, two platoons stationed to flank the firebases, ready to intercept anything that might slip past the defenses from the fort.”
Isaka thought about his words. They certainly made her feel more comfortable about the threat from the pillars. But until tonight, that had not been the major source of conflict. “And what about from out there?” She asked, tilting her head towards the outside perimeter.
“Well, we have the early warning systems in place again, plus the auto-guns are now fully operational. On top of that I've had the quick reaction force stationed in the center of town, able to move quickly to intercept a threat from either direction. That's why I had to have your people down here if you recall.”

“You needed us out of the way.” Red-wind said, nodding his understanding. “So you can do your jobs.”
“Correct”
“Problem is, there’s not enough room down here for everyone.” Isaka grumbled. “Not with everyone from town. . .” The Earth shook slightly, and dust rained from the ceiling.
“What was that?” Red-wind asked. The major’s radio squawked angrily, as surprised and nearly panicked voices.
“Trouble.”

Summon Imp!
Travel with a newly born demon as he grows and learns in his own world as well as in other worlds as he gets summoned again and again. Usually to die or kill for others in strange and exciting places, but it's never certain what the next one will bring. It has its perks. With each new world comes a new story with new experiences and new lessons. There is always more to see, more to learn and more to know. Maybe, someday, it will all make sense. For now he will just work hard to become stronger, to be useful and, hopefully, survive that way. A coming-of-age story, but different. Things start to slow down to a crawl. Colors blur into one another until my vision is completely white. All I can think is "Shit, not this again!" I hate being summoned. _________________________________ updates once a week until I get more time The idea for this story began in two places. One was the ridiculously rapid pace of gaining power in many novels. Both in games and in novels, I enjoy the struggle of the beginning character, why always the rush? The other was the way many monster or non-human MCs always seem to hurry to become human (again). It always felt like a cheap way to grant the character extra powers without the difficulty of writing a non-standard thought process. Thus I wanted to write the slow(ish) progression of a monster character gaining strength and intelligence, while remaining distinctly non-human. There are no stats, xp or systems, no reincarnated soul or completely formed being to start with - unless I want to make fun of those. While the MC 'evolves', the process takes months if not years to proceed step by little step. Sit down with me and imagine, what would it be like if...

Heart of the Dungeon
A lazy, wingless, blabbermouth of an imp, smearing goat’s blood all over the crystal – that is the unpleasant view this new Heart wakes up to. “I’m your Prime!” the imp says. The Heart reluctantly agrees. In an unknown world, filled with dangers, it needs every help it can get – even if said help is not…optimal. The Heart tries its best to succeed, even after being tricked by shrewd traders and having less than useful minions. Rival races settle in the Dungeon, causing even more headaches. The heroes, as they call themselves, sets their aim on the ‘new and defenseless’ Dungeon. The heroes are always lurking in the shadows – well actually, they are standing in the open, under the sun, hiding nothing – but either way, their evil intentions, no matter how they claim to justify them, only cause needless death. “Am I really that precious? Must you hunt me so fiercely? Why are you doing this to me?” The Heart does not understand their motives. Perhaps its lack of understanding has something to do with the fact the Heart has no physical limits nor material needs. Why take it from someone, when you can simply will it forth? Just pay for it with mana rent! To make things worse, the real dangers are not from above, nor from below, but from within…
