《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 50: Perception Training (2)

Right now, Kai was blindfolded.
"Eh?"
The old man suddenly appeared the day after and blindfolded Kai.
"We're going to train that 'echolocation' or whatever you called it. You can use it in confined spaces like a cave or a room but you can't use it at all when you're outside. That's natural, since you're a human and not some animal but you're a mage; you should think of other ways."
Kai suddenly felt force on his cheek, he was punched.
Naturally, he had no resistance to an unexpected attack and was sent flying.
The old man yelled.
"First part of echolocation training: dodging my attacks!"
The old man appeared beside Kai who was still in the air and kneed him upwards.
"Gah!"
Kai forcefully spat out some saliva as he was knocked higher into the air.
The old man jumped faster than Kai could ascend and kicked down with his leg.
Kai's abdomen was hit and he crashed into the floor. The floor cracked and broke under the old man's kick.
Kai was clutching his abdomen and rolling around.
"Unlike the other test, I'll give you time to rest after each barrage."
Kai took about five minutes before sitting up. After a few more minutes, Kai stood up whilst stumbling.
"AHHH!"
Kai roared and charged in front of him, he could tell that the old man was there by his voice.
"Good, good. Now improve that even further!"
Kai used all of his power to punch forward, veins appeared on his arms and the punch produced a huge shockwave of wind and dust in a cone in front of him.
"You need to detect minute changes in movement as well."
Kai heard the old man's voice beside him and was startled. Kai immediately did a backhand attack that aimed to hit the old man that was in his reach but it proved to be too slow. The old man landed a knee on Kai's other side and Kai was brutally blown away.
Kai bounced multiple times off the floor before stopping with a slide. The pressure of skipping on the floor had already softened because Kai's body was abnormal but the knee did plenty enough damage.
Kai immediately stood up and snapped his fingers.
Kai repeated this every ten seconds and slowly began walking forward. As Kai began walking closer to the old man, he snapped his fingers at a faster pace. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, he was decreasing the time as he finally met the old man in arm's length. At that point, Kai began to click his tongue repeatedly.

Kai's arm shot out, veins were visible but it was evident that it was not as strong as his previous blow.
The old man simply dodged it and appeared at Kai's side again. Kai twisted his body and aimed for a kick but it was dodged as well. Kai stopped clicking his tongue repeatedly and only did it after a second each time. In the middle of Kai's kick; his leg suddenly stopped and reversed, he was now aiming for a kick with the back of his leg.
The old man dodged that kick and aimed a punch towards Kai's stomach. It was blindingly fast but Kai managed to narrow the attack. He was hit but he didn't take the full brunt and had only stepped back a few steps.
"Hooh, you're doing this faster than I thought. Your way of producing sound is very inefficient though."
"But it's the only way I can produce sound right now, I'll probably make myself a tool to create magic that produces sound higher than the human frequency can hear though, I'm sure that with my enhanced hearing, I can hear that."
"Frequency? I'm guessing that has something to do with the limits of hearing but what a strange name."
The old man held his chin and vanished.
Kai stomped on the floor once and immediately punched behind him. He did the one second tongue clicking routine again and continued attacking the old man. Needless to say, none of his attacks hit but they became closer and closer each time.
The old man's attacks always hit but Kai dodged them the best he could to reduce the force behind the old man's attack. Kai would only get knocked back after every few hits, the old man could tell that Kai was steadily improving himself.
Days passed and Kai finally had a proper dodge rate, he can dodge the old man's attacks two-thirds of the time. The old man judged that expecting anymore was too much to ask of his C-class body and made him focus on attacking.
More days passed, Kai hit the old man two-thirds of the time as well when counting scrapes and a third if it was at least half of his attack needed to hit.
In the end, a month had passed before Kai could finish training echolocation to a sufficient amount that he could use it in combat. He took several trials like trying to find the old man in a cave or catching fish underwater. In the end, Kai was exhausted for a whole month and only had a single day to rest before the next phase. It was acceptable since Kai only had a little more than ten months left.

Kai took some time for each phase of his training save for sight. He trained hearing for a month, and taste, smell, and touch for half a month each. He also took another month to polish each of his skills and in the end, Kai feels like he has a sixth sense, that's how aware he is of his surroundings.
The old man clapped his hands.
"All right, time for a mock battle to test your perception."
Kai was stretching himself, his muscles were even more toned compared to before.
"All I wanted was to learn about how to manipulate more elements but I unexpectedly improved my body instead. But I still can't feel it getting stronger, it's more like I can just manipulate it more. So much wasted potential, I guess that's the problem with training faster."
Even though he was happy that Reo trained him faster and faster, he could feel the results of training with the old man more. But without Reo's training, Kai wouldn't have been able to keep up with the old man's training.
Kai finished stretching and stood up straight. Kai's and the old man's eyes met, they both knew what to do.
Kai's body leaned forward; the old man mirrored his movements.
Both of them kicked the floor and dashed.
Kai punched out and the old man redirected Kai's attack to the floor with his arm.
The old man pulled Kai's foot towards himself and punched with his right fist, Kai used his left palm to hit the side of the old man's wrist to redirect it as well.
Kai smirked and the old man shrugged his shoulders. The old man then head-butted Kai, both of them took damage but the old man's body was several times stronger. Kai focused his [Body Enhancement] on his forehead to reduce the damage.
"Well played."
The old man's forehead was red while Kai's forehead was slightly bleeding. Kai immediately healed it and tried grabbing the old man's body to do a suplex. He enforced his arms with strength but the old man did the same. With the difference in body height and power, Kai was easily suplexed.
Kai felt his collar bone crack but he was fine with a bit of continuous healing.
Kai backflipped multiple times and crouched.
Kai then held his left collarbone with his right hand, his hand glowed green and he stretched his neck.
The old man dashed forward and did a flying kick. Kai rolled to the side and dashed towards the old man that landed.
But before Kai could reach the old man, he did a sliding kick. The old man turned around and did a leg swipe at where Kai's body should be but was avoided by his roll.
"Hoooh."
The old man leaked out a noise of praise.
Kai stopped mid-roll and placed his hand on the floor to kick upwards. The old man retracted his leg quickly and jumped backwards.
Kai immediately landed his feet and stood up quickly. But before Kai could move, the old man appeared in front of him with a fist aiming at Kai's abdomen.
Kai side stepped and made a leg sweep. With his body height, he would miss the old man's fist and kick him in the leg.
The old man made a jump and teleported behind Kai.
Kai's back was hit in the back with the old man's foot. Kai went with the force of the kick to soften the impact while reinforcing his entire back and legs to stay upright on the floor.
Kai immediately dashed towards the old man.
The old man kicked forward, Kai carried it on his shoulder and crouched. Kai pulled the old man's leg and tried to make him fall forward. The old man grabbed Kai by the collar of his shirt and raised him up.
The old man punched Kai but Kai blocked with his arm. The old man then tried to knee Kai's abdomen but blocked when Kai used his knee as well. The old man attempted a head-butt but Kai then used his other elbow to counter him.
Both of them stopped in place.
The old man suddenly had a smile.
"Well played."
Kai grinned.
"I learned from the best."
The old man chuckled, they stood normally and were going to shake hands. Once their hands clasped, the old man suddenly pulled Kai and suddenly elbowed the back of Kai's head. Kai's body crashed into the floor and cracks were made.
"You let down your guard but... you made enough progress. We can now begin trying to manipulate water."
Unfortunately, Kai was unconscious. His body was tough but with his guard down and the old man's power, he couldn't keep up.
"As expected of my grandson."
The old man gave a smirk and left a note before vanishing.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
