《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 81: Motives

"Why'd you have to create another persona? And that persona of yours is not like the other one, I feel like it has its own consciousness."
Erina asked.
"That's because it is another consciousness. My body houses two different consciousness. When I'm awake, he's asleep but when he's awake, I'm also awake. I control majority of the body. He knows about me and I know about him."
"...You split your consciousness into two just to avoid being caught?"
"Even I'm not that idiotic. I have my own reasons, three specifically."
"And I'm guessing you won't tell me?"
Kai stayed silent for a few seconds.
"Not right now."
Erina placed her elbows on the table and leaned her head on her hands.
"Still, there's always the chance of catching your lie no matter how good you are so you created another persona that has a different attitude from you and would hide it."
"Yes, my plan worked very well and I even fooled Yoko who was led by you. It all worked... until you revealed your magic eye and it was coincidentally the type that reveals the truth."
To see through transformations and magic, it can also sense if a person's words are false and when trained enough, it can even read minds... one of the strongest magic eyes ever known.
"Rest assured. Like before, I won't reveal any of your secrets but I am curious..."
Erina pointed at Kai's left eye and arm.
"What are those?"
"What do you mean?"
Erina looked at it closely.
"Well, like I've said before, I can differentiate fake from reality. I heard that your arm and eye were destroyed from Yoko's descriptions. But, as I can see your arm and eye are fine..."
Even with her magic eye, Kai's arms felt natural yet strange.
"...Can I touch it?"
The curiosity got the better of Erina. But Kai's expression cramped.
"I don't think I feel comfortable with someone touching my eye directly."
"Then, the arm."
...What do you mean 'then'? Were you really planning on touching my eye directly?
Erina was focusing on Kai's eye before and that was the reason for Kai's cramped expression.
"I don't really mind but don't do unnecessary stuff."
Kai stretched his arm on the table. Erina poked it at first but soon started rubbing it to check for the feeling of his skin.
"...It really does feel real. My eye also doesn't react at all..."
But is it really? Those words always entered Erina's mind. Yoko had told her of some circumstances albeit reluctantly. Yoko wasn't lying when she said that Kai's arm and eye were destroyed.

"But it's harder, I guess?"
Erina used her own arm for reference which made Kai raise his brows.
"For someone very smart you don't really have much common sense, huh?"
Kai laughed lightly.
"I don't want to hear that from you."
But it got the displeasure of Erina who insulted by Kai, the one who had the least common sense.
"Well, you used your own arm as a reference but do note that I train my body everyday while you train it to keep in shape. The difference between our muscle mass is huge."
Erina held Kai's hand and compared it to her own. To everyone, they were lovers. To themselves, they didn't even realize what they were doing. And to the certain princess standing outside the cafe windows who had just happened to pass by and stare at Erina and Kai holding hands, they were undoubtedly lovers.
When Kai felt a stare on him, he looked outside and froze. Erina did the same.
When Haru saw that they saw her, she immediately readied herself to sprint away. But Kai did not let her do that, he vanished from his seat and appeared behind Haru while clutching her shoulder.
When everyone in the cafe saw Kai disappear after holding hands with Erina, they all thought one thing.
He was cheating and got caught. Those were the thoughts of everyone who had seen them. They weren't really surprised with Kai disappearing because the one in front of Kai was Erina, one of the strongest if not THE strongest youth in the entire kingdom. Any ordinary person wouldn't be able to become her lover- Kai wasn't her lover though.
Kai dragged Haru inside and the three of them moved to a larger table. Right now, Haru had her head down and was meekly looking at Kai and Erina.
"...Kenji, why is the third princess here? Or more like, how do you know her?"
Haru twitched when Erina said 'third princess'.
"Uhh... how'd you know I was the third princess?"
Haru asked with a raised hand.
"Because of this."
Erina pointed at her right eye which had a different color before it returned to normal.
"A magic eye..."
Haru had her eyes wide open as she saw that. The chance of dual attributes was many times higher than a magic eye. There were variations too. The known magic eyes of the kingdoms were only two, one of telekinesis and one of protection. The telekinesis was many times stronger than Kai's [Telekinesis] six years ago. The magic eye which had protection could create magic shields and barriers without casting at any place the user wanted.

Needless to say, they were two of the strongest in the continent. The both of them are part of the eleven- nay, twelve S-class in the continent. The duke of Mariko Palaca had just recently became S-class and was crowned the strongest in the kingdom but... it was gone when the king had proclaimed that the captain of third princess' royal guard who always wore a mask was the strongest. Though it wasn't proven, the words of the king couldn't be taken lightly.
The duke had of course taken offense but had not made any moves since then.
Now, there were three people here who were keeping secrets from each other with two of them not knowing that the other had already revealed.
'I can't let her find out that he's actually Kai!' were Haru's thoughts.
'I must hide the fact that I'm the captain of the third princess' royal guard.' Kai thought to himself.
'If the third princess were to find out that this is Kai that destroyed the clan, things will become troublesome! More like, how does the third princess know about Kai?' were Erina's thoughts.
Erina and Haru were trying to hide the same fact while Kai was hiding his own secret. Even though Erina had called him Kai before in the presence of Haru while knowing she was the third princess, Erina knew that she wouldn't be taken very seriously.
But Haru on the other hand panicked like the world was ending when she heard the name 'Kai' from Erina at first. And now, she did not realize that Erina's magic eye could easily see through Kai's disguise due to stress.
"So, Princess Natsumi, how did you meet Kenji?"
Although the name Kenji felt unnatural when coming from her, she had to call him by that now that she knows it's truly Kai. Having a member of the royal family know his real identity would be attracting trouble.
"We've met three years ago and were only reunited a week ago. Also, please call me Haru, it'll be a problem if people know about me..."
"Then, by all means, please call me Erina. And, please keep my magic eye a secret."
Three years ago? So he arrived here three years ago?
Erina narrowed here eyes at Kai. With her eyes, she was telling Kai the words 'You arrived three years ago yet didn't come to meet me?'. For some reason, Kai didn't hear her words but he could see what she was saying.
Haru didn't notice the strange mood but saw that Erina was staring at Kai which made her tilt her head.
"How about you Erina? When did you meet him?"
Erina made a cute gesture unconsciously, she had placed a finger on her bottom lip and looked at the ceiling.
"Several years ago... in the forest."
"The forest?"
All Haru had heard from Yoko was that Erina was there and they were friends for quite a bit of time. But Erina's actual meeting with Kai was omitted. Although Haru and Erina were digging into each other's knowledge, Kai was nonchalant because he knew that both of them already knew the truth.
Actually, it was funny for him. He knew that the two were trying to hide each other's knowledge while prying into the other's.
A smile raised from the corner of Kai's mouth which went unnoticed by the two who were focused. But Erina had an advantage, her eye could see the truth and Haru was bad at lying and deceit.
Out of all the sons and daughters of the royal family, Haru was one of the least fit for a political position. In fact, she was fit to be a lesser noble rather than a member of the royal family. She had no interest in political affairs but had to learn them.
"By the way, didn't you call Kenji 'Kai' before?"
"Ah, that was a misconception. Right now, I'm on a date with 'Kenji' he had proven his identity before this, so..."
Haru was visibly nervous when she asked her question and she twitched when Erina said the word 'date'.
"T-then, I'll take my leave. I must be interrupting you two..."
"Eh? Are you sure you want to leave? It's not like we're lovers or anything, I had just wanted to hang out."
"I'm fine, I have to do something after this."
Haru waved her hands at Erina and left the cafe.
After sipping some tea, Erina closed her eyes.
"She knows you're Kai, doesn't she?"
"...Nn."
"What was the purpose of trying to pry into each other when we both knew?"
"...My entertainment?"
Erina glared at Kai and continued eating the snacks.
