《Origin of Flames》9 The Whispering Candle

Why is it hot in here? I open my eyes, ash rises, wood and coals smolder around me, in a circle of warm steam, "What?" I
try to stand, but my legs ache. "Ah- shit!" I crawl just outside the circle, the chilled wind screams at me. I look over to some dry planks and reach for them. "Come on!" I swipe them and throw them in. I back up into the steam and
do my best to tear off my one of my jacket's torn sleeves.
I put the planks on my leg and wrap it tight. I fight the pain and stand. The wind blows through my hair and I can see through the steam. The dark clouds shadow all. The steam dies down and the wind breaks through. "Damn." I limp out and
a light dances in the distance.
Wait! The coals didn't burn me. Maybe? I pick up a coal. I did not imagine it, I'm not burning. I stuff coals into my
pockets, jacket and pants and make a limp for it, up a snowy ramp. The winds push me over into the high snow.
I get back up and wince all the way to the next house. I lean on the upstairs window and almost stumble through. I crawl
in, "Hello?" The candle flickers in the dry home, only it's creaky halls answer. The wind whistles against the home, even now it
wears everything down.
I take a seat and look into the candle's flame. It whispers a song, no, a dance. I hum it's melodic dance, something pure,
peaceful. I hum and shut my eyes, imagine it play out, my loved ones live as ghosts. They dance to this melody and I let
myself cry.
I gasp awake, the flame went out. It's song is over. The wax spilled towards a fallen painting, So the railroad was
founded- The tracks! They must lead to where they were going, maybe they left a map! It's hard to think, even now my legs
ache. The walls creak and a series of snaps follow. Parts of the walls break apart, these gaps blow snow into the house.

Note: Slight edits to early chapters (and removal of one chapter - previously chapter 2) have been made 2/2/21 The city, my city, had once been alive in a way that was hard to describe. Thriving, active, hopeful. Vibrant. But life, as I had come to learn, sometimes possesses only the most tenuous of grasps. Finally, in the end, it became my city - mine alone. I was, after all, the only one left. Worse, it was entirely my fault. There was red in my ledger that could never be wiped clean. Not while I still lived, anyway. This story follows Eran, a man who became the opposite of everything he had ever wanted to be; in a world where superpowers began to appear in a rare few, his lack of control over his own power relegated him to the role of a terrible villain - the Reaper, named so for the countless lives that he absorbed and made his own, each only furthering his deadly lack of control. Gone mad with guilt and isolation, he strove for a single heroic act - his own demise. Death was less permanent than he hoped. Centuries later, he woke to a changed world and in a body not his own. Unfortunately, his power came with him. Yet this time, things would be different. This time, he had a chance to bring it under control. He could never truly make up for the things he had done; he could never achieve redemption. That wouldn't stop him from trying to be a hero. The Sorcerer's Apprentice
A world where magic must be hidden from mankind is a world where mages have no reason to exist. Zara was one of them--a young woman forced to spend her days in confinement, to lessen the risks of outsiders discovering the truth. She was not human. She was, as they say, a living embodiment of a thousand year old curse upon the Kingdom and humanity as a whole. And the only way to handle a curse is to get rid of it--which is precisely what the Kingdom had been doing for centuries--eliminating any being that contained even an ounce of enchanted blood. Zara has lived most of her life with the threat of death hanging over her head, though it never averted her heightening curiosity about magic, nor the abilities innate within her. And when a powerful, enigmatic Sorcerer comes to her with a proposition, Zara finally sees her chance to embrace the curse she was born with. It was a chance laced with precarity and destruction, but a chance nonetheless...
