《Era: Dawn of the New Gods》Chapter 41: Mira

Samira walked a few kilometers before she saw some men patrolling a street behind a barricade.
She had removed her armor and kept it in a back pack made of monster skin, she only had her weapons hanging on her armor belt, her body suit, her hoody and the katana strapped to her back along with the back pack on.
She didn’t wear her mask as she thought it would make her far too suspicious and make her face more memorable when it was revealed and besides, the people here had never seen her.
The men spotted Samira as she approached them and when she reached the barricade they asked "Where's your ID? And what happened to your team? Are there survivors?" Samira replied "I don't have a team why do you ask?"
The patrol guard replied "You're not from around here? That's rare, it's been a while since there's been a new comer" the other guard also looked mildly surprised. The guard gestured for her to come with him.
She followed him to a room that they had made into their station. She noticed the guards stares as she walked pass them; the body suit was quite tight, it also didn't help that she was very curvy; the guards were taking side glances even though they were trying hard to control themselves. The guards didn't dare look at her boldly, they were all Rank 2 and she was Rank 4.
Noticing the stares of the guards Samira thought 'Jade, that bastard, he's still trolling me even though he's not here, I'm sure he knew a suit this tight would cause me to get looks, didn't he say that he wanted me to be inconspicuous?'.
Samira ignored the looks; she planned on buying better cloths so it would only be a temporary problem. The guard she followed, probably the leader of the group, who looked to be in his early 30s, said "My name is Daniel, you can call me Dan. What's your name?"
Samira smiled and replied "You can call me Mira" the guard nodded and told her "You'll have to wait here for a while. We will contact the boss of the sanctuary to come and interview you".

Samira looked puzzled and asked "Why does the boss have to see me? I only just want to check out the settlement" the guard replied "You're a Rank 4, which is very high around these parts, so we need our boss to personally meet you".
Samira had a look of realization when she heard the guard's explanation; she thought 'Seeing Jade destroy Rank 5s must have really warped my world view, even in Banu city the Rank 4s were treated with respect'. Samira asked "How long do I have to wait?" The guard replied "Just a few minutes".
In 14 minutes Samira heard the sound of quick footsteps of running approaching the building she was in. The footsteps stopped and a man entered the building followed by 2 women.
The three of them were Rank 5, the man gave the guard a short greeting and walked towards Samira, he extended his hand for a shake and said "Welcome to the Western Lagos sanctuary, my name is Jola,” He pointed to the women behind him and said “She’s Anita and she’s Teni, what's your name?"
She thought for a while and replied with a smile "You can call me Mira" Jola continued "Nice to meet you Mira" and sat down opposite her, while the two women stood at his sides. He said "It's rare to see a Rank 4, where do you come from?"
Samira thought 'Their leader is a Rank 5? Well I guess I should have expected this Abhad was Rank 5 too' but what surprised her the most was that he wasn't a high human 'Amazing, I thought everyone was a high human except Jade' he was a (Superior) High Human.
She replied "I came from the North, from Abuja, I travelled here with my master but he told me to go on my own some time ago" Jade didn't plan for Samira to tell a total lie, he just had her tell the truth while omitting and tweaking some details, which was the most subtle form of lying there was.
Jola was suspicious when he heard the report of a Rank 4 loner, the only Rank 4 humans he had heard of were the important members of the other sanctuaries and cities in Lagos.

So he thought that she was one of them, trying to sneak into the sanctuary and cause problems, but he didn't recognize her. 'Maybe she's a member who just became Rank 4?' he thought he didn't even consider her story as true.
Samira removed the wrapped sword she had hung on her shoulder and placed it on the ground; she didn't want to break the table with it. She massaged her shoulder after putting it down; it was very heavy.
She removed the wrap on it and Jola saw what was under the wrap. It was a katana, he had seen monster weapons but he had never seen one as powerful as what he was looking at.
There was a thin layer of white aura around the weapon and he could hear the small currents flowing through the weapon, combined with the lines and patterns on the sheathe, he was so captivated by the weapon that it took one of the women coughing to bring him out of his trance.
Samira was looking at him when he regained himself, he had embarrassed himself. Samira said “This is a weapon my master created, it’s too heavy and powerful for me to use so I plan on trading it”.
When Jola heard her he was shocked ‘One person made this? And gave it out? What kind of demon is he?’ Samira continued “How much will you pay for it?” Jola’s eyes darted between Samira and the woman on his left, Anita; she was giving him a look that told him to be honest.
He replied “Honestly, I thought you were a spy sent by the other settlements. Rank 4s don’t usually just walk up to your door and decide to join you. The weapon your master made is a literal master piece, I haven’t used it but I know it will be the strongest weapon I’ve ever used. I can only decide on a price after checking out how the weapon works”
Samira smiled and said “Give it a go”. Jola took the sword from the ground and went outside the building, to a place where there were only destroyed buildings, to test it out.
Samira explained the working of the sword “The sword is a draw sword, which means it’s most powerful when it is pulled from its sheath… Wait, do you know how to control energy?” she asked. Jola responded “Yes”.
Samira said “Good. The sword will build up potential energy when you energize it, while the sword is in its sheath and the sheath is locked. After 3 minutes and 23 seconds the swords sheath will unlock, if you’re not holding the sword or if you’re not strong enough to handle it, it will fly out of the sheath on its own or send you flying with it so be careful.
The sword can also create white aura flying slashes that have lightening attribute and it can create an elongated aura blade that is about 3 meters long. The name of the sword is Flash Thunder”
Jola finished hearing all the information and thought ‘Is her master a god? All the settlements have been researching energy skills all this time and none of us have even seen a glimpse of success, but he already created a weapon that has so many skills. I have to find out about her master, but I can’t be rude; if I show her that I have more interest in her master than in her it could annoy her and she may not sell, especially if she has bad blood with her master, she may have stolen this weapon when her master disowned her’
Jola looked at the expression of the two women beside him; Anita and the other woman were trying their hardest to hold back their shock at the things she was saying.

Forced Development (What does it truly mean to live a fulfilling life?)
To get things started I would like to admit that this story does not bring much new to the table when it comes to the over-saturated Litrpg genre in terms of things like mechanics and power systems. Then what exactly am I trying to bring to the table with this work? A nice slow-paced novel about people maturing and growing older think of it as the re: zero or jobless reincarnation of Litrpgs. A story that tries to take into consideration how a worldwide system would affect the economics and culture of a world. A story that is much more character-focused than the typical heavy progression-focused novels this genre is known for. The RPG system, like any good power system, is there to actually explore the themes of the story and not just as a plot device for characters to get stronger. This is a story where we will see the growth of the Mc from being a baby to when he dies of old age. With plenty of heart-racing actions and intriguing plot developments along the way. Exploring themes like; What does it mean to improve at something and what does it mean to mature as a person? How does magic, the constant threat of monsters and people so much stronger than the average joe that they can destroy countries affect one's culture both on the micro and the macro scale? How people are affected by the culture in general? Generational trauma Nature vs Nurture Talent vs hard work What is morality, society, and people's opinions on both? What does it mean to be human and what does it mean to be alive in the context of a world with multiple sapient species vastly different from one another in basic biology? All these questions are going to be explored from multiple angles using the system as a catalyst for those discussions. So if any of does questions sound interesting to you what are you waiting for, I'm sure you are going to love this story. PS - Chapter come out every Friday at about the same time.
