Prologue
Gone Is The Light
Chapter 1
“John Union, you’re my last appointment. Please take a seat.”
“What’s going on, how did I get here?” My heart raced and my palms were sweating.
“Now John, don’t be that way. You’re my last appointment. You are here because you’re on my list. You may call me Uriel.”
I searched frantically around the office. There were no windows, doors, or even shadows. The room was bathed in light from no discernable point. Everything glowed as if under a spotlight. It was jarring to say the least.
“You’re my last appointment, we have all the time in the world. John, we are going to start with the best part. The new bells and whistles. The old universe is gone. A new one has been formed and updates have been made. I’m going to go ahead and install the gamer system.” The voice hurt my psyche. I could feel my consciousness slipping away.
Uriel’s voice was effeminate. The light was too blinding to really look at her. It was like looking at an old low-res picture. She had yellow or gold hair. A white business suit and a condescending look on her face.
The woman smiled. It was difficult to tell by the overbearing light. I tried to get up, but my muscles failed me. What’s happening?

“I get it you’re frightened. You should be. God has decided to cut his ties with humanity. If not for your immortal soul. You would have been left behind, to rot with the former universe.”
Despite the flashing blue screens, I was able to catch what Uriel said.
“That can’t be true, it’s impossible.” What about his covinent with humanity? What about the promises he made.
“Of course, it’s possible. Did you think humanity was our lord’s only creation? I thought you would be pleased. You lose the protections of god and get to play games forever. We will throw you far across the universe. Too far away for your kind to hurt the next great experiment. We don’t want a second Lucifer situation.”
Uriel Fire of the Sun lv200,000,000
Uriel is one of the stronger Arch angels. She is known to wield the fire of heaven.
Cureently you have no chance against her.
My eyes locked on the black screen written in gold. It flashed more urgently than the calm blue screens.

I couldn’t lift a finger, so how could I possibly fight her. I wanted to hang my head in shame, but even that was deniged me. Perhaps, it was time to bargain.
“Alright, so what do I get in this severance package. I get something beyond the gamer system or why bother talking to me. This whole situation could have been automated. Why did you bother with a meeting face to face?”
Uriel held out her hands in a placating jester.
“Now, don’t go all, I will have my vengeance on me. I’m not the one who made this decision. My Lord decided that he wanted to make something else and see how they turned out. He grew weary of watching you humans kill each other. You could have made it to mars and explored your galaxy by now. Instead, you just sit and stew on one world. It was pathetic. We made this personal, so there is no doubt that you are being replaced. In other word’s god is breaking up with you. Now, open your stat screen, so we can continue.”

“As you can see each stat has an in-depth description tab. Do you have any questions?”
“Why don’t I have any perks and why are my stats so low besides intelligence?”
I didn’t have to wait long for the answer. The angel sat back in her chair. The smile hadn’t vanished.
“That’s a great question. You do have a perk, but it won’t appear until you spawn out. As far as your stats go. Well you were always smart John, but you never put your mind to work as you should have. Humans, are rather weak. Physically, humans never passed 20, your average human male is a 7 in strength. John, you let yourself go, you are a 4. Even your intelligence is nothing special. The average is 17, you are just above average. Any more questions?”

This angel was a smug one. I couldn’t fight her, or move. The only tool I had at my disposal was my tongue. With 2 charisma that wasn’t incredibly useful.
“You mentioned a severance package what’s that about?”
“The Lord is benevolent even to those no longer protected by his grace. I am to grant you any one thing you request. Once you have what you want, you will die and respawn on a far-off world. This will be the last I see you for eons.”
I racked my brain for anything. I could request anything, so what did I want. I stared at the angel. She was blurry. Was that because of my low perception? How could I see what I needed when the world was so blurry?
“I know what I want.”
“Oh, you do. Tell me so you can be on your way. There is very little time left before this little office ceases to be.”
“I want eyes like yours. I want eyes that even an archangel would be proud to have.”
I struggled against the invisible bounds that held me in the chair. Uriel needed to know I was serious. I wanted to look the angel in her eyes. My body remained still as stone.
Uriel got up from her seat. The desk vanished. There was a frown on her face when she looked at me next.
“Eyes that an arch angel would be proud to have. Do you know the strain eyes like mine would put on your puny human mind? The shear amount of perception I have compared to you is staggering. It’s a number that you couldn’t begin to calculate. The only reason you can see my movements is through an illusion. My words are filtered through a series of machines, so your human mind doesn’t splatter. So, you want eyes like mine, do you? Do you want to end the great illusion?”
Not going to lie, I was beginning to feel unsure. This angel was so far beyond me, I might as well be a grain of sand before a star.
For a moment there was an uncomfortable silence. The paralysis was getting to me, I wasn’t used to being in one place for too long. I wanted to fidget but couldn’t.
“I stand by my words, I want eyes that even you would be proud of.”
“Giving you eyes like mine right away would leave you in a state of torment. Your body wouldn’t be able to react to your senses and you would die repeatedly. The respawn engine would go haywire. Why god gave you humans immortal souls, I will never know. I will give you a skill that will slowly evolve and change your eyes into that of an angel’s.”
She wasn’t gentle. Uriel gripped the sides of my face and drove her thumbs through my eye sockets. I screamed in agony. My body was frozen while she drove her thumbs deeper into my skull.
Something warm and gooey dripped down my cheeks and I realized that was my melted eyeballs. The pain was gone by that point. She let go of me and my body began to burn.
When the fire reached new skin, I opened my mouth to scream. Nothing came out, she was paralyzing me again, the bitch. That wasn’t very nice.
“May we never see each other again John.”
“Yea, bitch if I see you again, I will destroy you. Just wait, I will be back stronger than you.”
She chuckled, once again, I didn’t think that was very nice.
“I hope you enjoy my little gift John. Your severance package has been completed.”
Next, I awoke it was to the sounds of birds chirping and the smell of hot garbage. I looked up to see two suns. This wasn’t Earth.

I turned around at the sound of a snapping twig. An ugly green scaled creature, with bat like ears, and a bulbous triangular head; slowly walked up to me. The creature was less than four feet tall and carried a wooden club. As it walked it slammed the club down on it free hand.

Legends of Balarel - A Leisurely LitRPG
Glenn Redwood has longed to become an Adventurer since he was a young boy, and has focused every waking moment on that goal since turning 14. Answering the challenge of the Gods of Balarel, he has fought Monsters, Leveled, and grown stronger. Yet the day before his 16th birthday, the day he will earn his dream or lose it forever ... the Gods have made a wager. And no mere mortal wishes to draw the attention of the Gods. ***** This is my crack at writing a leisurely LitRPG. My focus is more on telling interesting stories set in a world where people live under a MMORPG-like ruleset enforced by the Gods, and less on writing another story where the MC gets massive stat boosts every chapter before heading off to wreck the world. There will be plenty of blue tables (it’s LitRPG!) but my Adventurers are just starting out. This fic is about the journey, not the destination, so expect everyone to Level ... leisurely. Updates: M-T-W-Th. I’ll post 3000-4000 words a day, or 12000-15000 words a week. If this posting pace ends up being too much for me, I reserve the right to slow posts down a bit. Inspirations: Blessed Time (Royal Road) Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon? (Anime) Trails in the Sky (JRPG Series) MC: My MC is a genuinely good person who’s both a talented warrior and tactically savvy. He prefers to solve problems without violence but will resort to force if necessary to protect his friends or innocent people. I’m tired of stories starring anti-hero MCs facing endless doom and gloom, so I wanted to write a nice guy with an adventurous spirit who helps people in a thriving fantasy world. That’s all.
