《Owning a cute little pet》Hell broke loose

I breathed out in relieve. Shiina got away.
Sadly, that relieve was soon overtaken by the pain of the wound in my lower body. A bullet had penetrated my flesh and was now stuck somewhere near my right pelvis bone.
Fortunately, in that moment the adrenalin kicked in and somewhat suppressed the pain while also boosting my mental abilities. With my head cleared from any useless thoughts I realized that right now, I was in plain sight. In other words, I was an easy target for my attacker.
Without a second thought I jumped to the side and hid behind a corner. Going on I was sprinting forwards. I had no weapon while whoever attacked me had a ranged weapon. Even if I was a martial arts master this would have been a bad situation for me, but I certainly wasn’t a master of martial arts!
If I didn’t want the next bullet to hit my head I had to run and wait for a better opportunity!
Of course, I had no hope I could just escape my attacker. In the first place, no matter who it was who was chasing after me, the Chinese or the Russian mafia, it was unlikely it was only one man who was going after me. Eventually I knew I would have to fight, but if possible, I would like to choose favorable conditions for my last stand!
I ran further and soon enough I heard further gun shots behind me. Bullets strayed all over the street and I could hear the panicked screams of innocent bypassing people. My expression fell, and I cursed as I quickly turned into a more desolate street.
I didn’t really want to involve anyone else into this!
After all I was responsible for the downfall of my attacker’s whole organization. In other words, even if I died I could only blame myself for my inaptness. On the other hand, the people in the streets had nothing to do with it in the first place.
It was the kind of weird honor of a rogue that made me want to protect these innocent people.
Once again, I heard gun shots and from the sound of it my pursuer had come even closer to me. My eyes shot around searching for anything I could use to buy myself time to escape even further. Luckily the back alley I was running through had a bunch of trashcans and empty boxes standing around.
One of these small hills of stacked up boxes was right in front of me and I while bypassing it, I swung my arm to make it tumble on the street behind me. This wasn’t really going to be of much of a help, but I believed that it was still better than nothing.

To my surprise one of the boxes contained some sort of white powder that spilled out and quickly rose into the air creating a sight cover for me. My luck was really great at that moment!
I had to run!
My brain chose the only feasible option, only that for some reason the direction I ran to wasn’t the other end of the street, but instead the direction of my attacker! More gun shots followed as he shot blindly into my direction. I kept close to the walls of the street since it was unlikely that the marksmen who was just randomly firing where he expected me to be, would try to fire at the walls of the surrounding buildings.
My body felt like it was on fire, my muscles scrapping together each ounce of power as I sprinted forwards while trying to stay safe from the ongoing hail of bullets.
The sound of shots came closer and finally I saw my attacker, a young Chinese man pointing his gun into the alley and pulling the trigger over and over again. He was just changing his magazine when I arrived in front of him. Of course, since I could see him he also instantly discovered me. Shock appeared on his face and he tried to shift the gun to shot me.
Without stopping even slightly I rammed him upfront.
We both fell to the ground and the gun fell from his hand. He immediately began to struggle fiercely and tried to get up, but I desperately used my entire weight to keep him on the ground. I had no idea how to fight and never visited any martial arts classes, but at this moment it was completely irrelevant.
With the resolve of someone who was going to die if he did not struggle with all he had, I punched his face, used my knees to kick into his stomach and used the little space I had between us to ram my elbow into his face.
From desperation grew strength and I actually managed to hit him hard enough to make him black out for a moment.
This was my chance and I threw myself over to the gun that had been laying a little distance away. In the next moment I had in inside my hand and stood up as fast as I could.
The young Chinese man was still on the ground though his consciousness was slowly returning. When he saw me holding his gun his face turned pale, but in the next moment shouts in Chinese echoed through the alley and I could see three more men running towards us, their guns pointed at me. The young Chinese man’s face lightened up and he even smiled mockingly.
I did not think in that moment. I lifted my gun and pulled the trigger.

Blood splattered, and two lifeless eyes stared at me. The shock and disbelieve of his last moments were clearly embedded into his expression.
Inside my mind I felt a little pinch. Killing someone for the first time wasn’t something that wouldn’t affect one after all. But that was it. I had killed someone, but the only thing that came to my mind was that from this moment on I would have to kill even more if I didn’t want to be killed.
My eyes turned sharp and I surveyed the three newly arrived men.
They had stopped moving staring at me in shock. No one could have imagined that I would mercilessly kill the defenseless young Mafiosi. Shock and fury was painted all across their face.
I was completely calm, scarily so. Once again, I lifted my gun and pulled the trigger.
The sound of shots filled the street. I had shot three times and of course I had not hit a single of the three men. But that hadn’t been my intention in the first place.
As soon as the shots rang out the three men let themselves fall to the ground and took cover behind a trashcan. Only after confirming that none of them was wounded did they come out from behind there again.
Unfortunately for them I had already disappeared from their sight by then.
Angry shouts rang out and they began to chase after me. To their surprise they did not have to run far.
They ran for a few meters when suddenly I jumped out from a door frame. I raised my leg and kicked on of them into the side. He tumbled and crashed into the floor. At the same time, I pointed my gun at another one of them and shot.
The bullet ended up piercing his arm and creating a bleeding flesh wound.
I couldn’t allow myself to stop for even a second, so I proceeded to ram the third man. This time I made sure that I did not fall to the ground. This however also meant that the man was also still standing and now he was also pointing a gun at me.
He shot, and I tried to evade as good as I could. My body turned as I let myself fall to the side. The bullet gazed my arm and emblemed itself into the wall behind me. In the next moment I pushed my legs against the ground, stopping my descend and once again shot towards the man.
My opponent’s expression was grave as he pulled out a knife and held it in fort of him.
It was to late to stop my attack and I could only run into the blade. But to the man’s surprise I immediately pointed my gun at him.
The blade stabbed into my side and violent waves of pain threatened to extinguish my consciousness. But before that could happen I once again pulled the trigger.
The bullet shot out of the gun’s barrel and accurately hit the man’s head. Blood splattered onto my face and tainted my vision.
I whirled around, ignoring the pain from the knife still stuck in me and immediately emptied the magazine behind me.
As I had though the man I had kicked to the ground and the man with the wound in his arm had already recovered and were coming at me. Once again as soon as they saw me pointing my gun at them they crouched down, this time however they returned the fire.
Despite their attempts to evade my bullets I still managed to hit one of the men, the one with the wound in the arm, into the chest. He spat out a bit of blood before tumbling to the ground.
He was still alive, but if he wasn’t treated within the next ten minutes he would die from internal blooding. His lungs would fill with blood and he would drown pathetically.
Another bullet hit me into the stomach and I nearly blacked out. My mind became hazy and I could feel that the blood loss was taking a toll on my body. My situation was almost completely hopeless, since my gun was out of ammunition, and in my desperation I grabbed the knife stuck in my side and pulled it out.
A fountain of blood exploded out from my side and I almost fainted again.
My knees gave out and my mind was turning dark, but in a last desperate attempt I shot towards the last standing man while holding the knife in front of me.
His expression was really comical as the knife accurately struck his heart. Hey, I might be a microbiologist, but I still know how to dissect animals. Of course, I know how to accurately strike a heart!
We both fell to the ground and I could hear how his heart was desperately trying to pump blood through his body. In the end the vigorous muscle became more and more desperate as it slowed down and finally stopped moving.
I breathed out in relieve, but to be honest my situation wasn’t any better. I could feel my body becoming colder by the moment.
Suddenly I heard loud voices. For a moment I had the hope that someone would save me, but than I realized that they were talking Chinese.
In the next instant hell broke loose.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
