September 6th, 2017
9.12 am, Naval Air Station Key West, USA
“What did Zeta do?” A masked man asks as he looks at his Heads-Up Display.
“Fucked up.” Another masked man answers.
6 men in ski masks sit huddled in a rectangular formation in a snug, windowless, vibrating metal cylinder with computer displays around. They are dressed in all black and armed with handguns, although two men have assault rifles. Black tactical helmets sit on their heads and black gloves rest on their hands.
“метла Squad Theta.” The masked man sitting in the lead says, “The mission remains.”
“We’ll slaughter Team Six for the General!” Another masked man says.
“Theta will not fail.” All 6 men shout.
6 minutes later…
The metal cylinder has stopped. Six men stand up and face the front hatch. The masked man in the lead cocks his Glock 17 handgun. He taps his left temple, activating his Heads-Up Display. Then, he steps forward through the open door and into the abandoned hallway. All men file out.
They navigate their way through the hallway maze. The point man uses the augmented reality overlay of his goggles, which shows 6 red lights through the walls, to maneuver. The team moves silently towards the lights. They stop a few meters away, moving to surround the door. The point man moves his watch over the security lock, it opens. He bursts into the darkroom. The others follow in. Their goggles are the green hue of Nightvision as they search the room.
6 beds, one empty. The rest occupied by… young people. This isn’t right.
“Hands up!” A masked man shouts, pointing his M4 semi-automatic assault rifle at a man.
“They are up! They are up!” A man responds standing up in the dark.

“Who are you?” The masked man asks.
“A doctor. Just a doctor.” The Doctor responds with terror in his voice.
“Where are the wounded soldiers in this ward?” The masked man asks.
“No soldiers. Just young people.” The Doctor responds.
Suddenly, the Doctor is hit with a butt of a gun by the masked man. 4 other masked men stand around, watching the interaction in confusion while pointing their guns at the Doctor.
“Lie to us and you die!” The masked man says.
“I am not lying!” The Doctor shouts in pain, “I have been here with my patients the entire time.”
“No!” The masked man shouts, “There are supposed to be middle-aged wounded soldiers here.”
“What do you want from me?” The Doctor shouts back, “These are my patients.”
“What is wrong with them?” The masked man asks.
“Nothing.” The Doctor says, “They are testing sleeping pills.”
“Then why did you lockdown this entire floor?” The masked man asks.
“I do not understand what you mean.” The Doctor says, “There must be a mistake.”
“Don’t play me for a fool! This is the right floor.” The masked man says.
“3 men and 2 women but they look nothing like the pictures.” Another masked man says, rejoining the group at the end of the room.
“Too coincidental.” The point man says.
“Bad intel?” Another masked man asks.
“Impossible.” The point man says.
“Then what do we do?” A masked man asks.
Suddenly, wind gusts from nowhere. Water springs forth from the floor. The ground shakes and things begin to float. A bright light explodes followed by overbearing darkness. Chaos.
Freaky mess.

Throughout someone's life, these will increase with time and effort, and all of society revolves around these Numbers. Paternum: A Superhero Story
When Quinn finds an experimental superpower-granting costume in their parents’ attic, they didn’t expect to be drawn into a web of superhuman intrigue, but their discovery serves as the catalyst for that conspiracy to slowly unravel. At it’s heart, Paternum is an extended coming-of-age story for the main character as they become a superhero, in a world with more reasonable stakes and less powerful heroes than many superheroic worlds. Themes include what art means to different people, and what it means to be a patron, whether as a sponsor, a parent, or a supporter. I consider Paternum‘s primary influences to be the various versions of Spider-Man, J. C. McCrae’s own superhero story Worm, and Drew Hayes’ story SuperPowereds. I hope that fans of such stories can find something to enjoy in mine as well. Paternum is primarily hosted on my website (thevoidwrites.com) where it updates weekly in groups of scenes totalling approximately 2000 words. Here on Royal Road, it will update once daily with one scene at a time, but only after each act is completed on the home site - the next batch of updates is scheduled to begin on February 5th. There is a discord channel for discussion (discordapp.com/invite/QFMM6yA), and you can vote for Paternum on topwebfiction (topwebfiction.com/vote.php?for=paternum) as well. Finally, you can buy the first book of Paternum, The Swift Uplifting Rush, in a couple different ways - as an ebook through Amazon, or directly from me for a discounted price, or as a physical paperback from Amazon. Buying the book will give you access to Drawing Hands, an exclusive arc that won't ever be published on either my site or Royal Road.

The Shattered Universe Saga - Deus Vult Alpha from Omega
This is book one. Rick West, a wounded Marine with a very unique past is transported, with a significant portion of Earth's population, to a new universe. One that is shattered and yet to coalesce under a divine law. This is the story of a military man who begins the saga immature, rough, careless of other’s feelings. A young man whose focus is on getting laid, fighting, and winning at every turn, regardless of cost. He gets caught up in a strange occurrence, along with a billion others, and finds himself in an oddly familiar place where life is lived as a timed-event role-playing game. He discovers that within the shattered universe he is a Mystic Player, a Marshal, a figure of power, potential, and probability. If he wins, he may even able to wrestle unto himself the very throne of heaven. Rick starts to build his Pantheon with his most trusted companions, friends, family, and a harem of strong and talented women. He faces challenges within himself and others, and also must lead his faction into battle with men and monsters. As Rick and his companions progress through the adventure games within the pocket universe, he develops a greater understanding of his humanity and the qualities of what makes each of us uniquely valuable. He grows mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, without really noticing how he is leaving his old existence behind. Striving against him for truly ultimate power are a thousand others with the same potential, the same possibilities. All are aligned on the spectrum from the brightest of minds, the lightest of hearts, to the darkest of souls. All Mystic Players, be they Monster or Marshal, share one characteristic. They thrive in chaos. And a shattered universe is a universe in chaos. At the end of the Saga, will the winner be someone worthy of emulation and even, if it were appropriate, of worship as an exemplar of divinity. Will the title granted to the Final Victor be EXEMPLAR, or will the title be DESPOILER? That is the question.
