Chapter 9 – Black Turtle Sect
Kiron and Robin had finally arrived at the city of Taruck. “Now we just got to find out where we have to go in order to sign up for the tournament.” Kiron turned his head towards all directions, trying to figure out where to go next.
The city was even more crowded now than it was the previous time they visited. It seems like a lot of people are here for the tournament that starts in 2 days.
“There’s a banner pointing towards the center! That must be where we must go in order to sign up for the tournament!” Kiron pointed at the banner as he spoke. “Well then, let’s go!”
The center of the town, the most crowded place. There were kids their age everywhere, this seemed to be the location. “There! Seems like we have to go over there to sign up!” Robin was looking at a booth that was surrounded by people as he spoke.
Just as they were about to go sign up they heard a voice from behind them, “Have you heard? The Black Turtle Sect and the Burning Phoenix Sect have sent some of their disciples to participate in this tournament!”
Both Kiron and Robin turned around upon hearing this. “Yea, I’ve even heard that they added an interspatial ring and a High Ranked Core to the prize pool!”
Kiron and Robin turned their heads and looked at each other, huge smiles appeared on their faces! An interspatial ring? It’s like a personal treasure chest! You put some of your World Qi into it, and the ring will belong to you. The only way for someone to access your interspatial ring is to kill you. Otherwise, there is no way for anyone to access it.
The best part about an interspatial ring is that while they’re only the size of a ring, they have enough room to store an entire room!
“Let’s go sign up!” Kiron started walking towards the booth. “Ugh, we’ll probably have to stand here for a couple of hours” Robin said with a frown on his face. There was a gigantic line in front of them.
… Hours passed by.
“Hey there, we’d like to sign up for the tournament!” Robin said with an impatient voice.
The man in the booth looked at Robin looking at him for a couple of seconds, then he turned his head towards Kiron, “How old are you? Only kids between 8 and 11 allowed in this tournament.” Robin wasn’t the only one speaking with an impatient voice.

“Uhm… I’m 8 years old!” Kiron said while trying to keep his face as normal as possible. The recruiter stared at him sharply for a couple of seconds, “Kid, you’re not a very good liar” … “Please, make an exception for me!” Kiron started panicking; he really wanted to participate in the tournament. The recruiter was about to speak, but he was interrupted “Just let that kid join the tournament, it’s his choice if he wants to get beaten up” A man wearing a black coat with a turtle emblem appeared behind the recruiter, “Ah, Sir! Of course!” The recruiter asked Kiron and Robin for their names, and then he wrote their names down in the list.
“Thank you for helping me! My name is Kiron, may I ask you what your name is? Kiron looked at the man in the black coat, “A brat like you wants to know my name? Forget it.” The man said as he walked away.
Kiron looked towards the man in the black coat with a shocked expression, “What a rude guy!” Kiron turned his head around and started walking towards the inn at the entrance of the town.
…
Robin paid the innkeeper, renting a room for 7 days. Robin looked at Kiron, “I think that guy is a member of the Black Turtle Sect” Robin continued, “Make sure to beat up every Black Turtle Sect member in the tournament!”
Kiron looked at Robin with a smile, “I’ll make sure to humiliate the Black Turtle Sect in the tournament!” Kiron who usually had a good temper, had for the first time in his life experienced someone talking to him like that. He did not like it.
“Anyways, I’ll start refining the High Ranked Core! I think I can reach the 3rd rank before the tournament starts!” Kiron took the High Ranked Core out of his pocket, and as he was about to sit down and start refining the core, “Hey, wouldn’t it be boring to sit here for two days? How about going to the mountain and hunt there! You should be strong enough to fight a profound beast of the 7th rank by now,” Robin continued, “Besides; battle experience is also an important factor when it comes to fights! What good is strength if you don’t know how to use it?”

Kiron looked at Robin for a moment, “I guess you’re right. Perhaps, we might encounter those Silver Wolves again! This time we should be able to easily deal with them!” Kiron thought back to the moment when the Silver Wolves had cornered him at the top of the cliff. He would have died if it wasn’t for Gogh and Helena! A lucky encounter like that… It won’t happen twice.
“We’ll split the cores evenly this time!” Robin said with a smile on his face. “Anyways, let’s leave, the sooner we get there the better!”
…
Kiron and Robin were walking up the mountain, looking for profound beasts along the way. “Hey, you have any idea how we can get to that cave where we killed that Silver Wolf the previous time we were here?” Robin continued, “It seemed to be the place where the Silver Wolves live at”
Kiron looked around for a bit, “All I remember is that we followed the blood trail on the ground, which lead us to the Silver Wolf and that cave.”
He took a few steps forward, standing at the peak of the mountain, “Hey Robin, I can see the river where I almost died… I think the Silver Wolves’ cave is located in that direction,” Kiron struck his hand out and pointed towards a nearby cliff, “If we climb over there, we should be able to find the cave!”
Kiron was about to start walking towards the direction of the cave, but he suddenly heard something being carried by the wing, “Stop, I hear something!” Kiron closed his eyes and listened carefully.
“Help me… Anyone…”
Robin looked towards the direction of the voice, “let’s check it out.” He started walking towards the direction of the voice.
The cries for help were getting stronger, Kiron and Robin arrived at the scene where they were hearing the cries for help. They both stepped towards the edge of the cliff, looking down.
There was a young boy down there, his ghostly pale face was filled with fear. He looked up and Saw Kiron & Robin, “Could any of you misters help me please?” He said with a voice filled with desperation and fear.
Kiron looked at Robin for a second, then he jumped down into the crevice. “Hey there, my name is Kiron… Who are you?” Kiron looked at the young boy who seemed to be about the same age as him. “I’m Douglas, I’m 6 years old and 3rd Rank of the Profound Practitioner Realm. I’m a member of the Burning Phoenix Sect!” Douglas managed to calm down a little after seeing Kiron act friendly towards him.
“The Burning Phoenix Sect? Anyways, my name is Kiron, 6 years old. That person up there is Robin, 8 years old. We’re not in any sects, but we’re hoping to join one.” Kiron introduced himself and Robin. “How did you end up down there? And shouldn’t you be able to climb out? You’re already at the 3rd rank, you should easily be able to climb out of this crevice!” Robin was curious, a member of a sect being here? It didn’t make much sense in his head.
Douglas’s face turned a little sour. Robin’s words had hit a sore point. “I… I was thrown in here by some members of the Black Turtle Sect… They broke my legs and threw me down here.” Douglas’s face was covered in fear and embarrassment
Kiron’s face darkened, “Why would they throw you down here?” Hearing that the Black Turtle Sect members had gone as far as to break his legs and throw him down here, he couldn’t help but feel a little bit angry.
“I was refining a Mid Ranked Core on the top of that cliff, then I was spotted by some members of the Black Turtle Sect. They asked me to hand the core over to them, but I refused… Then they broke my legs and threw me down here” Douglas’s face was no longer filled with embarrassment or fear, rather, it was now filled with anger.
Even Kiron felt angry. To be treated like that? Kiron just pictured himself in Douglas’s shoes, and that was enough to make him angry.
“Douglas, I’ll help you out! Once we get back to the city, tell me who broke your legs! I’ll break his legs for you!

The Twelve
In a world marred by the supernatural, Japan suffers from its own fair share of evil and demonic disasters, with generations of shamans known as Onmyoji protecting their homeland from these forces of evil. Capable of wielding magic and using spirits of their own, these shamans were not only skilled in battle, but also divination. However, they were unable to correctly predict Japan's loss in World War Two, and suffered the punishments that followed. Persecuted and torn apart by infighting, the Onmyoji reunited under the banner of the Tsuchimikado clan, descendants of Abe no Seimei, one of the greatest Onmyoji to ever live. The Onmyoji began to rebuild and to regrow. Ren is the sole heir to the Tsuchimikado family, but has been unable to practice Onmyodo ever since his birth, even though he possesses the greatest ability in the family. But when disaster befalls his family, Ren has nobody to turn to, and no idea how to use his powers. As he journeys to escape the same fate his family faced and attempts to learn how to use his powers, there is only one question on his mind; as the Tsuchimikado heir, how can he save the Onmyoji... from themselves? ---------------------------------------------- note from author: I'm writing this based loosely on the very real theories of Onmyodo, and so my writing may not be a truthful or accurate depiction of Onmyodo or other related areas, such as religion, for instance. That is why, while depicted in the real world, events that happen may seem unrealistic and it may be easier to imagine it as a parallel universe that is the same as ours, but with slight differences so that my possible errors will be easier to overlook. Sorry, and thanks!

Those who dislike subject material surrounding loss, depression, grief, should probably not read. With that said, the story evolves into a supernatural thriller past the initial chapters. It’s a comparably low fantasy for a website like this but hope some of you still enjoy it.
