《Jack》Chapter 1: Learning Can Hurt part 1

Jack stared blankly at his car. The hood was dented, the engine was likely damaged, too and not to mention the blood from the body that had pooled was now trickling down the side and dripping on the asphalt.
“It looks like I hit someone with my car...”
Jack sighed, realizing he probably couldn’t get it fixed without someone calling the police, or blackmailing him for money. It’s not like its a nice car, but he definitely couldn’t afford another one, and he lived too far away to bike. In any case, this is a bad situation.
(It’s okay! I’ll fly you to where you need to go!)
Ellis almost sang the words in his head, somehow unfazed by her own body laying dead in front of her. Jack began to question his sanity, this sounded like something from a second-rate anime, or light novel with questionable-at-best content.
“Did you say fly?”
‘I need to see a doctor,’ He thought to himself, ‘the voices are saying I can fly...’. Jack looked around at his surroundings, then sighed in relief when he didn’t see anyone. This would look really bad to anyone that might be passing by. His thoughts were interrupted by a very loud, and very energetic voice,
(Yup! Well, more like throw you, but that’s pretty much the same thing right?)
“No, it’s not.”
(How far can you humans fall before it’s considered fatal?)
“Not far.”
(How far is ‘not far’?)
“I don’t know what your thinking, but whatever it is, please don’t.”
Ellis chuckled mischievously, while Jack ignored her and took his phone out of his pocket. He pulled up his speed dial, and tapped on the only name that showed up: Jenny.
(Heh heh heh... you know, it’s rude to pull out weird glowing boxes while a beautiful goddess is talking to you. Hm, how should I punish you?)
Jack put his phone up to his ear before replying to Ellis.
“This is a communication device, now please be quiet while I make a call.”
The voice in Jack’s head didn’t seem to like his dismissive response, grumbling stuff like “Stupid technology, why don’t they just use magic like normal beings.” and “If you don’t want to talk to me, then I don’t want to talk to you...” and a few more things he couldn’t understand.

[Hello?]
A girl’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts and back into reality.
“Hey Jenny, it’s Jack.”
Jenny was Jack’s childhood friend, best friend, and also his only friend. She had always been around since they first met in the fifth grade, and always had his back, while he always took her crap. A kind of symbiotic relationship where he has a friend, and she has entertainment. In the beginning it was just pretty much bullying, but it slowly blossomed into a wonderful friendship. The only downside is he was permanently friend-zoned, a term he learned in the ninth grade when he tried to ask her out.
[Hey, Jack! What’s up? Girlfriend lock you out or something?]
Jack sighed and sat on the curb next to his car, he knew where this conversation was going.
“Jenny, you know I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Here it comes...
[Yeah... why is that? Your not still after little old me are you? I mean, if you save yourself for me, then you will be a virgin until your sixty.]
Yes, she hasn’t forgotten the incident in the ninth grade and, even worse, she hasn’t let Jack forget it either. You can probably guess the psychological trauma he’s experienced over the years from that one mistake.
“Why until I’m sixty?”
[You know I prefer older men. I also prefer to be on top.]
Jenny said it so matter-of-factly, but he knew better than that, he could picture the smile on her face as she lets that image sink into his mind. He could have lived without that.
“Listen Jenny, if possible, could you give me a ride back to my apartment? I’m having some... uh...”
Jack glanced at his car with the dead body laying on top, while watching the blood drip into the engine.
“Let’s just say car troubles.”
The other side of the phone was silent for several seconds, to the point where Jack thought she might have left, but her voice returned before he hung up.
[You are in luck my friend, I just happen to be out getting myself a midnight snack. Where are you?]
Jack looked past his car at the gate entrance he drove through earlier and let out a relieved smile.

“Thanks Jenny, your a life saver. I’m at the Jamestown Park, I’ll meet you at the south entrance.”
[Be there in ten.]
“Thanks again.”
He hung up and turned his gaze back to his car.
“Now... what to do with the-!? What the hell?!”
Jack shouted in surprise. The girl’s body that was laying on his car was now floating in the air and emitting an ominous, dark aura, and the blood that was all over his car turned black and began to evaporate. He watched as the body began to slowly dehydrate and shrivel up, bones popping and readjusting and skin tightening around the bone, giving it a malnourished zombie look.
“Ellis! What’s happening?!”
(What? If you don’t want to watch then close your eyes... sheesh, it’s not like I enjoy watching my own body decay. It’s embarrassing...)
“What the hell Ellis?! Your body decaying looks like something from The Exorcist!”
Jack took a deep breath and regained his composure, and the body crumbled to dust.
(What? Don’t humans decay?)
“Yes, but not that fast.”
The dust was caught in a slight breeze and vanished into the night.
(It’s funny. That dust that was just taken by the wind used to be the most powerful, beautiful, and all-around wonderful being in the universe.)
Jack was about to retort to her self-flattery, but sensed a trace of sadness in the usually energetic voice, and decided against it.
(Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I did something bad!)
She snapped back to her usual self and announced some disturbing news with a voice full of pride, which was slightly shocking to Jack, who was still feeling a bit sorry for her.
“Oh, no.”
(Hu hu hu.)
“Why are you laughing?”
Ellis let out a laugh fill of pride as if she just achieved a great feat without breaking a sweat, before calmly replying.
(When a goddess does something, she does it a million times better than any human, even when it’s something bad.)
“So your saying you just did something a million times worse than what any human could do?”
(No. I’m exceptional, even among gods and goddesses! So it’s even worse than that! Aren’t I incredible?)
She asked nonchalantly, as if asking for praise that was owed to her. Jack’s stomach did a flip as he thought about all the damage a goddess could do, and slowly worked up the courage to respond.
“What did you do?”
(Well, YOU were talking on your glow box of weird voices, so I decided to send a message via your body.)
“You can do that?”
Despite the fear he felt, he was still genuinely curious. It seems she can still control her power a little.
(Of course I can! How do you think I’m able to communicate with you? Anyway, stop interrupting.)
Her reply was very blunt and slightly condescending, but surprisingly cute. Even though he couldn’t see her, her personality is very easy to see through, and she was clearly feeling superior at the moment. Jack smiled despite himself.
(I sent the message while slightly irritated with you, and it didn’t exactly make you out to be the good guy, and now my archangel is coming down to “liberate me from the beast that dares take advantage of me in such a weak state”.)
There was a moment of silence as Jack stood alone in the park, not-so-secretly hoping this is all a dream, or a delusion brought on by lack of sleep. But, just in case it wasn’t, he figured he should prepare to meet a pissed-off archangel from heaven who is specifically targeting him. HOW THE HELL DO YOU PREPARE FOR THAT!?
(Don’t worry.)
Comforting words came from his mind.
(Angels can’t travel via teleportation like gods, so you will probably die of old age before she gets here.)
Relief filled his body, and he released a breath he didn’t even know he was holding, and laid back on the grass.
(Yeah, she won’t be here for, like, a couple of weeks... humans have a lifespan of about a week and a half, right?)

Dungeon Darwinism: Deepest Dungeon
Dungeons are a lot like sea turtles. They’re born in clutches of dozens, if not hundreds. But most of humanity only know about the dungeons that make it. Mark doesn’t know anything about dungeons. He isn’t from this world, and only as a victim of circumstance has he become an unwilling half of a dungeoncore. The other half is a Dark Lord. (Rewrite)
