《World 2.0(DROPPED)》Chapter 26: Entering the dungeon

When we walked down to the first floor, it was so crowded that we had to literally force out way through.
Eros and I finally walk out of the guild, while being amazed at us both escaping unscathed. We stand a few meters away from the entrance, debating what do now.
“So, do you know where the dungeon is?”, I ask Eros.
“No. I thought that we were just going to ask one of the patrolling guards. They should know”, Eros answers.
“Alright. Let's hope that one of them does, or we have to go back inside.”, I say.
We slowly walking through the streets until we finally meet one of the patrolling guards.
“Excuse me, sir”, I say to the guard.
“What is it?! Can't you see I'm working”, the guards almost shouts, while spitting when he even slightly opens his mouth?
That's is bloody disgusting.
“Sorry for bothering you, but could you give us directions”, I ask him, trying to sound a little formal.
“Fine”, the guard says, and proceeds to give us directions to the dungeon.
The dungeon is situated on outside the city, about one kilometer to the south. I was kinda surprised that is was that far, but Eros quickly explained, stating that it would an even bigger risk if the city was within the dungeons sight. Some dungeons have been known to spawn monsters inside cities if they were too close, so when the city was built, it was built just about far enough away to be safe.
I had also been a little concerned about the wrathful bandits, but their base was to the north of the city, so the chances of meeting them were quite low.
With the directions we needed, we headed to the dungeon.
The trip to the dungeon took only thirty minutes. I had thought that the walk over there would take a lot longer, but, luckily, a road had been made.
I was a little anxious about going inside the dungeon, so I decided to make some small talk while walking.
“So, how did you know about the dungeon? I didn't hear Elora talking about it when she showed us around town”, I asked Eros, curiosity in my voice.
He jumped a little at my voice.
Seems that he is anxious too.

“I heard some of the servants discussing it, and I asked about it. They gave all the information they could think of while trying not to tremble in their boots”, Eros said, with a cocky tone at the end.
“Are people afraid for some reason that I haven't noticed?”, I asked him.
“Lets just say this. Being almost completely covered in dried blood is not a good first impression. I am honestly not sure why people aren't afraid of you. I mean, look at your eyes! Right now, they look like you are made of madness”, Eros said.
Eyes made of madness?
“I just have a headache! It's not like I killed a whole family, and burned their house to the ground”, I said.
“If that's you look like with a small headache, I do not want to be near you, when you have a big one”, Eros said, while beginning to laugh a little.
Oh, you think this is funny? PSYCHIC POWERS. ACTIVATE.
I glance over at branch that had fallen of a tree and imagine it silently flying behind Eros.
“Hey, you want to hear a great joke?”, I asked Eros in a playful voice.
“Sure”, Eros said.
“What did the Half-Elf say when he got hit in the balls?”, I asked him.
He slightly tensed up, ready for me to pounce on him.
He´ll never expect it.
“I don't know. Maybe I don't know because it never happened?”, he said hesitantly.
I will the branch to quickly go between his legs and up. The branch hits his balls first, and he gets thrown a meter or two up in the air.
“I think that just happened”, I answered trying and failing to laugh.
“Go… fuck yourself”, Eros said weakly, lying on the ground in a fetal position.
“That's not nice to say”, I say, with a playful voice.
Eros slowly stands up, cracking his knuckles.
“When did you even learn to do that?”, he asked.
“Just this morning. Say hello to the newly improved mage slash psychic!”, I proudly proclaimed.
Eros cracked his knuckles again, a grin slowly forming on his face.
“Always wanted to beat up a psychic. Can't do it now, though. You need to be in prime condition for the dungeon. Know this, though. Do that again, and you will be spitting your nuts out through your mouth”, Eros said, while beginning to walk again.

I swallowed.
Oh god… What have I done!
Before we reached the dungeon entrance, I began imagining how it would look like.
I came up with this.
A giant, ten meters high, blue-glowing portal made of a black stone. All plant life in a fifty-meter radius would be dead, and when you stepped inside this radius, you body would constantly be tense.
No, that's too cliche.
Maybe…
Before you even see the entrance, you see the power radiating from it. It generates both fear and awe in all. You want to see what's inside, but you also want to run in fear of the creatures inside. The entrance is a stone door suited for a giant. Its luckily already open, letting you see the darkness inside.
No, that just plain dumb.
Maybe…
This continued for way too long for any sane person, and every single thing that I came up with was far from the truth.
When we finally reached the area with the dungeon entrance, we were not the only ones there. Many people were walking around in groups of three to seven, discussing different things, or practicing with each other. Why they would wear themselves out before entering a place of death, I did not understand.
I took a look at the dungeon entrance itself and became stuck in a trance of awe.
The dungeon entrance was massive and made of stone. It was about ten meters high and fifteen meters wide. I could see that there were stairs leading downwards, but after twenty meters, or so, a impenetrable darkness emerged, making it impossible to see further. I became a little uneasy about it, but people walking into the dungeon treated it like nothing unusual, so I just let it go.
Before anybody walked into the dungeon, one of two guards would stop you. They seemed to ask a couple of questions before letting you go in. I couldn't figure out what they were asking though.
“Shall we?”, Eros asked.
“Lets”, I said.
And with that, we walked over to the line for the dungeon entrance.
The line moved very fast. It was less of a line, and more of a very slow walking group.
Though, that didn't stop Eros from complaining.
“Why do we have to wait in this damn line?!”, Eros said, with an irritated voice.
Seems that his needs to kill were driving him mad. Or maybe he was hungry? Who knows.
“There is a very good reason for-”, A female voice tried to answer but was quickly interrupted by Eros.
“Oh, yeah? And what reasons would that be?”, Eros asked, staring at the person in front of us.
The person turned out to be the female voice.
“Sure. The first and most important reason is-”, the person was about to explain, but was, again, interrupted by Eros.
“Multiple reasons? Can't you just cram every single reason for one reason?”, Eros asked.
“I could if you didn't inter-”, the person tried to explain, but Eros interrupted her again.
“If you can, then you should”, Eros said.
The person didn't say anything this time. She just stared at Eros for a couple seconds before just turning away.
“Geez, what was her problem”, Eros loudly said, with a smile showing he knew exactly what he did.
She definitely heard them but didn't act upon it.
“You know what you did”, I said, with a grin.
“Yup”, he said, mirroring my grin.
She was vibrating with anger, so we shut up. Not for her sake, but for ours. We didn't want to get denied entrance into the dungeon because of somebody wanting to start a fight.
The line quickly moved, and in under five minutes, we were next.
“What is your business inside this dungeon?”, one of the guards asked.
“Questing”, I answered.
“Have you been in a dungeon before?”, the guard asked.
“No”, I answered.
“Have you ever quested before?”
“Yes”
“Good. When you enter this dungeon, you will be spawned on a randomized spot in the first floor. To be sure that you two are spawned the same place, hold hands until you are completely through”
“Okay”
“Now, move on”, the guard said, while signaling for us to move.
Eros and I held hands as we walked down the stairs to the dungeon.
Wonder how its gonna be.

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.

Author's note: English isn't my first language and this is the first novel I tried writing, which is why some of the earlier chapters aren't that good, even though I grew better over time. I'm still in the phase of editing a lot of my earlier chapters. But unfortunately, I haven't yet found any time for it. Daily updates are to be expected till we reach chapter 100. If your comment motivates me, I might upload up to five chapters.^^
