《Esoteric Skeleton Dungeon Master》Chapter 27

“It’s started.” I set the morning paper back down onto the table. Not one but two boulders are falling down the hill intent on crushing me to death. One of them is the life of a villainess. No matter how nice I try to be people will misread my intentions or some random phenomena occurs. I try to break out of the scenes from the game but they play out with or without my interaction, like laws of the universe. The second boulder is war. War with the neighboring country. Halfway through the first year, the villainess is recruited to fight in the war. It was her duty as a princess to get military experience under her belt if she ever wanted to rule the country, but to think that it would happen so fast.
“Anon.”
“Yeah?”
“We should flee. War is coming.”
Anon sits up and stretches out his limbs. “Finally something fun to do. You’d think more people would try to assassinate you or something.” He lights a cigarette and puts it in his lips. He pushes down on his chest and smoke goes out. As his chest pushes itself out smoke is sucked back in. I stare at him in disbelief. How can he be smoking inside my room? He notices my stare and pulls his pack back out. “My bad, did you want one?”
“Of course not! Go smoke outside!”
Anon shrugs and opens the window. He sits on the sill with most of his body hanging outside. A bright flash of light comes from my closet. My father, the king, opens my closet door. “Hello, my little princess. I need your help!” He says. Anon pokes his head in to see who entered the room. He nods to the king and then pokes his head back out. “War comes to our great nation. With your rare special magic, you are the perfect person for the job!”

I shudder. Please stop. This wasn't supposed to happen yet. It's all too fast, I don’t know what role she played in the war but in the game, she came back with a facial scar and an even meaner attitude.
“You’ll be able to stay safe in the backline and gain military prestige. With your spacial magic, you can store all the supplies the war needs.”
“Luggage carrier?” I squawk. Anon’s deep laugh can be heard from outside the window.
“I know. It’s not a luxurious job like commander, but you are still only fifteen. I couldn’t risk you on front lines.”
“But what if I get hurt?” or even worse, die.
“You’ll be in the very far back. Even farther back than the archers. If the front line breaks then I’ll have bigger things to worry about than my daughter. If my army gets destroyed I’d have to worry more about my crown.”
Wow, what a caring father, but I can’t deny him. I’m the only one with space magic in this country. The king leaves and Anon climbs back in. I lay on my bed about to cry. “It’s not fair. Not fair! I just want to be liked. I wanted to capture a cute guy’s route, but there are too many death flags! I don’t want to die.”
"Yeah. I like capturing guy's routes too. Especially the girly ones."
Was that his attempt at humor?
“Cheer up.” Anon reaches into his pocket. He does his thinking gesture. He has a weird tic when he is thinking about something. He swipes his finger up and down like someone swiping on a tablet screen. Then he his pokes jis finger through the air when he finds what he wants to say. “Have a candy bar.” He hands me a chocolate bar. “Chocolate? Where did you get this?” We are in a temperate forest. Cocoa beans shouldn't be anywhere near here. The shipping must have costed a fortune.

Anon shrugs, reaching another hand into his pocket. His pocket bulges as he pulls out a bottle of wine. I jump back. “That’s too big to have been in your pocket this whole time!” Anon shrugs again.
>Be Anon.
>The man of many inventions. You have invented two things in the past week.
>A way for skeletons to get high/drunk. If you let your bones soak in a substance. Then it gets into your body through osmosis.
>A way to use the store system and inventory without anyone knowing that you have ‘space magic’ Just put your hand into your pocket and pull it out. Looks natural as heck.
>Except for Prin. She is super suspicious, but you take the dark brotherhood approach and say nothing.
Imagine if you could. A dog, a golden retriever, with a brown wet nose. The type of dog that wants you to pet it. The type of dog who knows no abuse. Who trusts humans with their entire heart. On top of this dog is a cat. A calico white and orange cat. The type of cat that acts like it doesn’t care about you, but secretly will defend you to the death.
Now stop imaging that, it isn’t plot relevant, just a nice visual for you. Instead, imagine an office building. In the office building is an infinite hallway with infinite doors. The dead demon lord stands in front of one of the doors. He awaits the sacrifice to be complete so he can make his return to the Earth. A tall winged black woman begins to walk down the hall. She sees him standing at the entrance to the door and her curiosity is piqued. What else is a bored god to do but muddle in other people's affairs? “What’s going on in there, hun?”
The demon lord shrugs and turns away from her.
“Boy, who do you think you are? I am a goddess.” Nemesis, the dark goddess of retribution, takes out her dagger and stabs the demon lord. The demon lord curls over in pain. “Yeah. That’s an afterlife cut. Good luck healing that without a body.” Nemesis grabs the door and opens it up. The scene is of Hero pinning the Duke to the ground is playing out. Nemesis watches it contently.
“How could you do this? You were supposed to protect them!” and other such accusations pile out. Nemesis watches as the guards slowly surround and overpower him, cutting him down with the ceremonial dagger. She pulls her head back in from the door. “I’m taking this kid.” She tells the demon lord.
“What! No that is my vessel!” The demon lord begs. Nemesis shrugs and steps through the door.

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
