《Lord of the skies》Chapter 20 - The road that must be taken

The day passed quickly. After defeating the enemies only once, the revolutionaries didn't ask for any more help.
I healed my body completely and saw that Jess was healed as well. At least, for now, we could put our minds at ease.
Bryan looked around and saw that the fires were dying. The sounds of battle were stopping as well, it seemed like peace was finally returning to this city.
After a bit, a message hovered in front of my face.
The Revolutionaries have won the competition, all other factions have been forcibly disbanded and are now prohibited to form another again for 3 months. The rights to control the city facilities were given to the winner.
.
"It's finally done..." Though Bryan to himself.
"Let's go back to the headquarters." Said Bryan.
They got up and went back there. Getting near the building, they saw that many soldiers had a cheerful face. But even with the happiness of the victory, many soldiers were being carried on stretchers with countless wounds and amputated limbs.
Bryan froze for a second after seeing this. "Maybe the price to victory was too high." he murmured.
They entered the building and went to the war room. Arriving near there, he began to hear many voices inside the room. Ignoring it, They opened the door and went inside.
Many people were surrounding the big table. He only recognized Lionel and Samantha. although he didn't know who the others were, he saw that many of them had a powerful aura surrounding them.
Lionel saw them entering the room and said. "The heroes that had turned the waves in our favor had arrived." with a smile on his face.
"There is no need for flattering." Said Jess.
"In that, you're wrong my lady. The achievements need to be recognized." Said a man in the center of the table.
Bryan noted that the others showed a subservient attitude in front of the man. The man in question was 1,7 meters tall, had a well-proportioned face and short black hair and beard.
His eyes seemed to see through all the facades and lies that were set before him as if nothing could hide under his gaze.
"Recognition is a thing that every human need, and you deserve yours." he completed.
"Thank you for the recognition. But we are only here to part ways." Said Bryan.
"Oh, what a sad thing to know. Our cooperation was quite productive." Said the man. "Lionel. Guide them please."

After this, the man returned to the table and Lionel guided them to a room where the Samuel family was staying. The room had two beds for Samuel's parents and was well maintained. It seemed that they were living comfortably while they were here. Samuel hugged his parents and lead them outside the building.
"You must know that our organization will always welcome you with open arms." Lionel had a serious look on his face, there was no doubt that their powers would be welcome in here.
"Thank you, we will remember your kindness in taking care of my parents." Answered Samuel.
"Well, the situation in the city has more or less calmed down, it's time for us to go," Bryan said.
After saying their goodbyes, they left the building and escorted Samuel and his family to his apartment. They said their goodbyes and went to their house.
After taking a shower and sitting on the bed to relax, Bryan said.
"This madness is finally over now. We can at least rest for a while." He said while embracing Jess.
Now that the competition for the control of the cities is over, another round will begin.
In the previous mission, the factions powers were shown, now, individual power will shine. The next mission given by the system will involve a competition over the thrones of power. In earth mythologies, many struggles were needed until a hero is born. Now, it's time to show you want to take control of fate with your own hands.
Seeing this message suddenly appear, another headache began to form in Bryan's head.
Hordes of monsters will begin to attack the cities that now have a united leadership in three days. Those who want to stop the attacks or want to simply earn more power may get a new mission from the mission hall. The mission is named realms exploration. Good luck and show the world your power!
Monster hordes? That is certainly not a good thing. many people would die again. Although the city was now under the control of a faction, They simply didn't have enough time to establish their hegemony over the people.
Things would certainly get troublesome from now on.
"We have to take some action! The mission is targeted at powerful individuals, we must grab this opportunity with all our strengths." He said while looking into Jessica's eyes and trying to get up.
"We certainly have to." She put a hand on his chest and laid him back into the bed. "But now we are going to relax a bit and enjoy the moment." She began to passionately kiss him…

The sunlight entered through the window and illuminated their room. the birds were singing and flying through the sky announcing the dawn of a new day. The sheets were covering their naked bodies and giving them comfort. A soft bed and a beautiful sunrise, what a miracle this was! This new world was getting worse and worse. It was as if the system didn't want them to get too comfortable with their situation. Bryan was awake. He looked through the window and saw the beauties that this world had to offer. A blue sky, full of white clouds, birds flying peacefully. Sometimes he wished he and Jess were birds flying through the sky, without anything to shackle them to the ground and making them fight against everything and everyone.
"Good morning," Jess said while turning around and hugging him. "Is there something in your mind?" She asked him after seeing his contemplating looks.
"Nothing to worry about… Are we going to take the mission today?" He asked.
"Is it already available?"
"The system said that those that wanted to stop the attacks could get the mission there. It didn't say they could get it in three days. So I suppose it's already available." He completed.
"Well, then we may as well get it already. A lot of people must have already gotten it. The mission was specifically issued by the system after all, the rewards must be crazy."
"Let's go then." They readied their stuff and went to fetch Samuel.
After knocking on his door, they waited a bit and he showed up.
Samuel looked like he was knocked by a bull, he had just woken up.
"What are the two of you doing here so early?" He asked them gesturing with his hands for them to enter the house.
The apartment was not very big, but at least it was comfortable enough so that Samuel and his parents could live in there.
"Where are your parents?" Asked Bryan after looking around and not seeing them.
"They went toward the fields. I insisted for them to stay home, but they are two stubborn oldies and ignored me." He said after sighting.
"Well, at least we know they are safe for now." Bryan comforted his friend. "We are here to see if you are going to come to this mission. I know that these times are getting pretty hard, but we wanted you by our side."
Samuel sat on the couch and looked at the ceiling. "Well. Now the city is protected by the revolutionaries, wanting it or not, we have at least a shield to protect us. What concerns me is this mission…. The attacks are not going to stop until it is completed. So, if no one stops it, we are going to be completely crushed right? We have the power and the responsibility to stop it." His eyes were shining by the end of his phrase.
Although they were not directly responsible for any life, they had the power to contest against fate. The people that just wanted to live a normal life have given up the right to control their fates on the moment they didn't strive for power. After all, if you have no power, them your life would be at the mercy of other people.
"Do you want to talk to your parents?" Asked Jess.
"It's better not. This mission is going to be very dangerous, and they certainly would try to stop me. Let me write a letter to them." Samuel wrote the letter and they left toward the Mission hall.
They were a bit apprehensive about some things. The facilities were now controlled by the revolutionaries. Would they put any restrictions on it? That would only be answered by going there.
After arriving in front of the building, they saw that many people were coming back from there while having a dejected face. It was obvious to everyone that something was very wrong!
After getting through the flux of people, they finally got up the stairs and arrived at the missions hall. There was no restriction in place by the revolutionaries. But after looking at the mission that appeared on the board, they knew why.

Alex and Julius, a pair of brothers, try their best to make it in a North America reshaped by an eldritch apocalypse. “Stop right there Philip!” Julius interrupted, the vein on his temple starting to throb. “I do not want to hear another simile about what magic is. I have had magic explained to me by three cult leaders, a wizard, and a cannibal. I've heard that magic is like a rainbow, all its parts blending together. The human unconsciousness, powerful and unknowable. A body, you don't want to eat the heart straight away. I am sick and tired of people telling me what magic is. I know damn well what it is.” He drew a breath, interrupting his rant. “Magic is a bad joke. A whole lot of setup, for some nonsense punchline. This whole god-damned apocalypse is an eldritch comedy.”
