《Battling Records of the Chosen One》105. Obeying Orders

At once all those present stared at the figure suddenly appeared.
They found that the person’s figure was thin and straight as a spear. He was dressed in an old-style military uniform of the empire, which had turned whitish from much washing. There was no embellishment on the dark purple uniform and he worn no shoulder mark of Ziyao Flower representing honor.
He had a dark complexion, with a frosty look and an unshakable aura like a mountain even if he just stood at will.
His eyes were sharp as a knife. A chill, namely the feeling of being stuck against throat with a sharp sword, would come over to everyone who had an eye contact with him.
Lin Xun, Ning Meng and the boy in white robe all felt stiff all over, looked a little different and perceived that there was an extremely dangerous aura from the thin man.
“All the irrelevant people have to leave in thirty seconds. Otherwise, you will be responsible for the consequence!”
The thin man spoke in a hard and cold voice. He indifferently glanced at the Silver Eagle Battleship, heavily armoured men in front of the battleship and the charming young girls on the treasure carriage, like staring at a group of dead people.
“Childe....”
Many people looked hesitantly at the boy in white robe.
“Go back and tell my grandfather when I return home a year later, if he dares to keep me from chasing after Zhao Zijin, I will be really angry.”
The boy smiled chicly and waved his hand.
At once, the procession followed him returned to the Silver Eagle Battleship and flew away in a roar.
The thin man looked at this without emotion. He did not look at Lin Xun, Ning Meng and the boy in white robe until Silver Eagle Battleship disappeared. “My name is Shu Sanqi and I am your drillmaster. Whatever your background is, once you enter Bloodthirsty Camp, you are a trainee of Bloodthirsty Camp. The only thing you have to do is obeying orders.”
Shu Sanqi was a very peculiar name.
Lin Xun and the boy in white robe did not speak, but Ning Meng asked, “Drillmaster Shu, what if we do not obey orders?”
There was suddenly a smile on Shu’s dark face which was as hard as the rock. He showed his white teeth and spat out a word grimly, “Die!”
Die!
Lin Xun squinted and the boy in white robe stopped smiling. Both of them realized that the ruthless Drillmaster Shu Sanqi did not joke.
Ning Meng was about to say something. But when he saw the creepy smile of Shu Sanqi, a chill came over him and he shut up.
He seemed to be straightforward, but he was not stupid. Before Ning Meng came to Bloodthirsty Camp, his father had said that if Ning Meng died in other places of the empire, his father would be sure to avenge him; but if Ning Meng died in Bloodthirsty Camp, he deserved to die!

His father was more lawless than him. However, he should say so, which made Ning Meng have to take it seriously.
...
Deep in the desert, there were barren and low mountains which were ablaze with dizzying light under the scorching sun.
Bloodthirsty Camp was deep in the mountains. It was like another world with many architectures and weird venues which were all dark.
If not led by Shu Sanqi, no one could imagine that there should be such an area deep in the hot desert.
In front of the gate of Bloodthirsty Camp, there was a striking sword-shaped stone sculpture which was 100 meters high. The point was up, seeming to poke a hole in the sky.
There was a line of words on the sculpture, “Ziyao Flowers never wither by drinking blood while the empire perpetuates by everlasting wars!” The writing was bold and sharp and the tip of these characters were like blades seeming to be able to cut the souls and shock the hearts.
“Remember the words.”
When arriving here, Shu Sanqi said coldly, explained nothing and led Lin Xun and two other people to Bloodthirsty Camp.
In Camp 39.
When Lin Xun and other two people were led to a great hall by Shu Sanqi, there were already over forty people who were all juveniles, the youngest of whom was in early teens while the oldest of whom was only fifteen years old.
There were exactly fifty people, including Lin Xun and other two people.
When Shu Sanqi entered the hall and glanced at people with his eyes sharp like a blade, the formerly noisy crowd became silent instantly and fear spread over everyone’s face.
Then Shu Sanqi said, “All people are here. Come to announce all matters, Young Ke.”
A woman in the military uniform of the empire stood out. She had shoulder-length hair, beautiful features, white skin, and straight and slim figure which was 170cm. In terms of face, figure and temperament, she was a beautiful woman without fault.
A well-dressed teenager in the crowd could not help giving a whistle full of provocative meanings, which caused a lot of banter and a laugh.
In their eyes, the woman was very delicate, beautiful and had no antipersonnel force.
“It is really a behavior of seeking death.”
Lin Xun heard a low and almost inaudible sigh. He knew that it was from the boy in white robe, Shi Yu, without turning round.
Lin Xun frowned and kept silent.
Young Ke walked towards the well-dressed teenager. There was no emotional fluctuation on her delicate face. With no nonsense, she suddenly lifted her straight and slim right leg. With a bang, the well-dressed boy was kicked away and hit the wall hard. It was unknown how many broken bones he had and he fainted with the tilt of his head.
When the others looked at Young Ke again, she had regained the upright posture. Three words came lightly from her lips, “Throw him out.”

Two glassy-eyed attendants rushed in, uplifted the well-dressed teenager, left the hall and disappeared in the public field of vision.
No one knew what punishment the well-dressed teenager would suffer. But no one had seen him since the day.
Yong Ke’s move was very fast. The power of her leg was extremely terrible and that kick was as swift as the lightning. The well-dressed teenager had the eighth-level cultivation of Martial Realm. It should be too late for him to react. He was stunned directly, and dragged away like a dead dog.
And all this was just because he gave a whistle.
When the boys and girls in the hall saw this, their expressions changed and they stood obediently. They had realized that Drillmaster Yong Ke was a ruthless character with delicate and beautiful appearance.
Young Ke seemed to have done a very common thing. She was calm all the while.
She stood in front of a crowd of juveniles and said calmly, “From today on, one thousand people including you will have training here. I hope you can persevere to the end.”
While talking, she took out a stack of books, “This is some basic information about Bloodthirsty Camp. You must remember and obey all rules and laws in it.”
After every one came to fetch the information, Young Ke continued to say, “Now, hand in all the things you have. When you leave, we will give them back. Of course, if you die during training, we will give these remains back to your families.”
All people looked at each other in speechless despair and they all hesitated.
Shi Yu took the lead in walking forward. After dropping a gorgeous storage necklace with obviously incredible value, he turned round and went back.
Then other people followed and handed in storage devices they had with them. Lin Xun also handed in his storage ring.
After a long time, when all this was over, Young Ke suddenly walked towards a girl, raised her hand and drew a small transparent hairpin from the depths of the girl’s long hair. It was obviously a storage device.
The girl’s face turned pale and she stuttered, “I, I forgot.”
Young Ke waved her hand without emotion. Two attendants came in, and silently dragged the girl out. It was useless no matter how she struggled and begged.
A chill came over those people again. They did not know what punishment the girl would suffer. But it was sure that she was doomed to be eliminated!
At the moment, they understood deeply what was “obeying orders”.
Then under the arrangement of Young Ke, each of the remaining forty-eight juveniles received a suit of clothes and a nameplate representing the identity.
From tonight on, no matter where these boys and girls came from, no matter how distinguished their identities were, they would take off their fine clothes, put on the uniform and wear their own nameplates.
Lin Xun learnt that later it was the rule of Bloodthirsty Camp. Even if you were the descendant of the nobility, you would be eliminated or even die when you broke the rules in Bloodthirsty Camp.
Soon Shu Sanqi went away.
Young Ke led the remaining forty-eight boys and girls to an open field of Camp 39, where there were only ten houses built of black stones.
“This is your dormitory. But only ten people can live here. Other people will sleep there.” While talking, Young Ke pointed to the distance where there was a low hill with many dark caves on it.
Many people looked a little different. In the hot desert, days were high-heat while nights were extremely cold. You could imagine how suffering it was living in the open cave.
Lin Xun did not feel anything about it. But he suddenly realized through this that besides obeying orders in Bloodthirsty Camp, there were omnipresent competitions. They even had to compete with each other for the dormitory, so it was conceivable that competitions were bound to be fierce in the future training.
At the moment, many people focused on the ten rooms and showed that they were determined to win.
Suddenly, a roar of beast arose from the distance, shaking the universe. A Bloody-pupil Leopard covered with scales and shells rushed towards the crowd, with a gust of stinking wind, extremely fierce.
The crowd moved restlessly. The adult Bloody-pupil Leopard was extremely terrible because it was powerful enough to fight with an overmatch of Gang Spirit Realm.
But just in a moment, the aggressive Bloody-pupil Leopard fell on the ground upon a kick from Young Ke. With a bump, the dust rose in clouds. No matter how hard the leopard struggled, it could not stand up. This made those present shocked and they looked at Young Ke with more fear.
Young Ke said casually, “It is very easy to live in the room. Just kill the fierce beast by yourself. It is a rare opportunity. If you want to live in the room next time, you need to accumulate points.”
Many people were suddenly in dilemma and irresolute. The Bloody-pupil Leopard was fierce and ruthless. If they had spiritual weapons, they could have a try. But now all their treasures were taken away. Who dared to fight with a Bloody-pupil Leopard with naked fists?
However, someone could not contain himself, rushed out and shouted, “Let me try!”
Lin Xun was shocked. It was Ning Meng. The eyes of the robust and valiant boy shone and his body was full of fighting spirit at the moment.
“If you lose, the consequence will be severe. Pointless challenge is a waste of everyone’s time.” Young Ke warned him calmly.
But Ning Meng just ignored it. He stared at the Bloody-pupil Leopard fanatically and shouted, “Come on!”

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
