《I've Transmigrated... with a Broken System》Chapter 7: Quest Rewards!

After going through a door that said 'Staff-Only', Robert continued to go further into the building. Renard followed, the further they went the more complicated the hallways got. Eventually, Robert stopped in front of a old decrepit wooden door. He then gently knocked three times and said, "Boss, Renard is here to see you."
After a few moments of silence, a gravely voice, which Renard recognised as Kyle's responded, "Let him in, you are dismissed Robert."
Robert opened the door inwards and then gestured to Renard for him to head inside. Although Renard was still somewhat hesitant about the situation, he still walked in. The room wasn't large, there was no formal desk, nor anything that made it seem like an office. In the middle of the room was a round table with four chairs around it, that seemed to be just as old as the door. In reality, the room resembled a wooden shack but it did have stone walls supporting the roof which was made of thatch. The stone walls themselves also looked very old, there was moss growing between the stones and the cement had worn away in places.
Kyle was sitting at the table, on the table next to him was an opened jewellery box with a lotus engraved on top of it. Once Renard stepped into the room, Kyle closed the box and beckoned at Renard to sit in the chair opposite him. "Come, sit down here. I presume you've come here to give me some boar hides. I know this isn't what you expected when I said 'little shop'."
Renard was more confident that he was in the right place now that he saw the same Kyle but he wasn't feeling any less confused. After walking over to the table he sat lightly on the rickety chair next to Kyle, it felt like would break if he wasn't careful.

[Quest Hand-In Requirement 'Be with Kyle' is completed.]
[To complete, 'Kyle's Boar Hide Collection' select the five boar hides you would like to submit.]
[Note: When you hand in quests via the inventory select option, it will seem completely normal to bystanders.]
'Thank goodness, it would have been awkward if I had to leave to get them. I should have remembered to take them out before I came to meet Kyle. Its fine though, thanks to the system.' Renard opened up his inventory, he had already used the separate option on the regular boar corpses. Currently in his inventory, along with the four hides, he also had four piles of both boar bones and viscera.
The only boar still in one piece was the leader, the first one he killed. He wanted to check if he could hand in the whole corpse, as it might give him more money. Alas, when he checked the options, there was no select option available for handing it in.
Feeling a little disappointed about having more viscera in his inventory, he separated the last boar and selected all the hides to submit. After selecting all the hides a little green tick appeared in each corner of the inventory boxes.
[You have selected Greater Boar Hide x 4 and Greater Boar Leader (Lightning Attribute) Hide x 1. Are you sure you want to submit these to 'Kyle's Boar Hide Collection'?]
'Yes'
At the moment Renard thought yes, all five of the hides appeared in Kyle's hands. Kyle nodded his head as he checked each of the four regular hides. However, when Kyle reached the leader's hide he was a little surprised, he hadn't expected Renard to kill such a strong creature.
Kyle looked up and said, "You managed to kill one of these annoying buggers then, this hide is actually worth quite a lot."

"I am sure you will compensate me correctly, you can't act cheap now I know you own this grand place."
"I wouldn't dare, here is your reward." Kyle spoke with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

Renard was prepared for something bad upon seeing the error however, he was pleasantly surprised at the first thing he saw. 'That is lots of money this will allow me to....' Renard's thoughts stalled as he saw the words 'Unrequited Love'.
While Renard's thoughts had stalled, a dramatic change happened to Kyle. He had suddenly become flustered, unsure of how to express himself he grabbed a possession he had never even considered giving to anyone before. Kyle raised his hand towards Renard, he was holding out the owner token.
Renard wasn't paying attention to this, he was too busy getting ready to run. He stood up and suddenly said, "Ok, well I have to leave now, I have some important things to do." Without even letting Kyle reply, he pushed the chair back under the table and sped out of the office.
[You have left the reward collection radius. 'Kyle's Owner Token' has been added to your inventory.]
Renard managed to make his way back through the corridors to the main lobby, he was not willing to stop for anyone, even ignoring Robert's question of, "How did it go?".
He continued to run until he made it back into the town centre, he put his hands up against the fountain as he finally stopped, he was almost ready to jump in. 'I lost a great friend this day.' He thought.
He then screamed out loud, "Is there nothing you hold dear system! First, Lucy. Now, this. WHY?!"
A future anti-establishment protester overheard his screams and thought, 'Yet another person screwed over by our rulers, what a disappointment.' A look of disgust was on his face.
[Congratulations! Skill 'Public Speaking' has been acquired!]

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
